London 2012 Olympic Competition

I know its stating the obvious but the USA just pick up golds so easy. Just got another two in the pool. Here in poor old Blighty we're happy with our bronze in the gymnastics.

So they should be, anyone with any talent gets the best training facilities, mostly through colleges. Ours are scrabbling about for pools to swim in. We do remarkably well. Pity we don't nuture our sporting talent in this way. We are better at gymnastics then them. We got a bronze, they got nothing. :)

Actually, we are probably not. We beat them today, but equally they beat us the other day in the qualifying round. USA had a stinker and the British Gymnasts kept it together.

Don't spoil my enjoyment. :) We have to better than them at something.

Also, they have 300 million people to pick from, we have 60 million, so ceteris paribus they should do better than us. But yeah, I agree, definitely not enough 50m pools around in the UK.

I don't think the length of pool has anything to do with it tbh.

The 15 year old girl who just won is from Lithuania but she lives and trains in Plymouth and her English sounds like she's lived there for quite a while. Pool numbers isn't an issue. We're only a nation of little over 300k and we have 7 swimmers competing in the OL.

It would be interesting to know how many kids give up on swimming because of lack of facilities. I just don't think kids get the encouragement they should get. Maybe our kids get distracted too easily or are just don't want to put the work in.

It takes some serious dedication, not just from the swimmer, but the parents too. I know a young lad who is a swimmer, he has to get up at 4 o'clock to get a swim in before School. feck that!

Women's handball is suprisingly good. The Norway Keeper <3

Ive seen her interviews and her English sounds like she lives on the moon!

Some swimmer , great job!

She'l be in the medals one day sure enough. And a great answer to those Twitter Trolls.

"It's two fingers up to them, basically," she added. "'What are you doing with your life? I've just competed at the Olympics!'"

Zoe Smith was brilliant today. Really enjoying watching the weightlifting so far.

It's nearly midnight and I'm gripped by the volleyball when I've got work in the morning... fecking Olympics.

My son was a semI-serious swimmer and he was doing 8 x 2 hr sessions per week at 11. His mate who is a better swimmer than him now does up to 11 x 2-3 hour sessions per week at 14/15 and if he wants to make it big he will need to work harder still.

My son is now a waterpolo player and he trains and plays for a minimum of 9 hours per week plus up to 6 hours swimming. Plus at least 12 hours in the car per week.

If you want to succeed at an aquatic sport you really need to put the hours in.

Is sure does. If you train solely in a 25m pool you won't be able to perform at your very best in a 50m pool and that is the length of pool that you race in for the main long course season. The winter (your summer) short course season is serious but essentially used as a preparation for the long course season.

Swimming is a very technical sport and only training in a 25m pool won't help your technique when racing in the 50 m pool.

Talking of water polo Australian and US women are looking good. The usual suspects are all still in it for the men's comp. Australia need to lift their game if they are to get a decent finish. They need to beat Khazakstan tonight and if Greece could lose to Italy they should go through. The UK already look out of it in both comps.

And when was the last time Australia did so badly in the swimming. Even the best Aussie swimmers are underperforming it would seem.

The USA are just amazing at swimming, they have won 17 medals but 12 have been in the pool. China have won the same total number of 17 but their winning events are far more diverse, weightlifting, swimming, shooting, diving etc.

The BBC website coverage is amazing btw, took some navigating at first but it's brilliant now. You can watch all the finals of every event really easily and quickly without going through all the bullshit.

The facilities over here are pretty amazing by UK standards. College facilities and scholarships give the US a great advantage when it comes to cultivating talent. However the recreational facilities in communities are far superior as well. Most high schools have competitive swim teams and they pretty much all have access to 50m pools.

What are they saying? Are they abusing them because they didn't win gold?

Ahh what a prick, at least he is in some shit now.

Very harsh on Zoe but those comments really don't surprise me :(, you will always get dicks on twitter thinking they are funny. She seems to have coped well with it though, so good for her.

Water Polo looks a right laugh.

You should be able to dunk though, too hard to win back the ball.

Was anyone watching the South Korean girl in the fencing? On BBC tonight they said that it was almost a 'dignified protest' but they didn't properly show it and it just looked to me like she threw a strop because she lost. What actually happened?

A 17-year-old has been arrested after malicious tweets were sent to Olympic diver Tom Daley.

Dorest Police said the teenager was held at a guesthouse in Weymouth hours after 18-year-old Daley received the messages on social networking site Twitter.

A police spokeswoman said: "A 17-year-old man was arrested by Dorest Police officers in the early hours this morning at a guesthouse in the Weymouth area on suspicion of malicious communications.

"He is currently helping police with their enquiries."

Daley and his Team GB diving partner Pete Waterfield missed out on a London 2012 Olympic medal after finishing in fourth place in the men's synchronised 10m platform final on Monday.

After the event, Daley tweeted: "#gutted so sorry everyone but we tried our best and we can't afford to miss a dive at this standard... bring on individual!"

Shortly afterwards, he hit out a Twitter user who accused him of letting down his father, who died in 2011 from brain cancer.

Daley retweeted a message from @Rileyy_69 which said: "You let your dad down i hope you know that."

The diver responded by tweeting: "After giving it my all... you get idiots sending me this..."

Speaking before the Olympics, Daley, from Plymouth in Devon, said his father "gave me all the inspiration that I've needed".

He told the BBC: "Winning a medal would make all the struggles that I've had worthwhile.

"It's been a dream since a very young age to compete at an Olympics.

"I'm doing it for myself and my dad. It was both our dreams from a very young age.

"I always wanted to do it and dad was so supportive of everything.

"It would make it extra special to do it for him."

More to follow...

Atleast they are doing something about it, although no doubt tom does not deserve it, i hope he can atleast take some comfort in the fact these idiots are being brought to justice.

Good on the police for doing there job quickly and efficiently.

He obviously wasn't arrested for being a dick to Tom Daley, and it's bemusing to see the media implying as much. It's the obvious death threats he was making later which will have drawn the police's attention.

He's been banned from twitter as well apparently. Didn't know twitter did that.

Seems like a good move forward.
