Liverpool : General discussion

With Rodgers in charge...I agree. With a competent manager we could potentially challenge for top 4. I don't think that's madness to say, I'm not saying we'd get 4th just that we could be in with a shout come the final few weeks.
I certainly agree about this. The most integral part of the jigsaw. However it's very hard to pick a name that would want to come and to do the job.

Have there been any outlets linking Coutinho with anyone?

Any top manager would get that Liverpool side to challenge for 4th spot. They will not look magical in their wins, but they sure as hell can eke the points out week in and week out once they have a proper system and sane management in place. Plus, top managers will attract top players, especially given their stature in English football.

That said, I'd rather they went for Ancelotti than Klopp. The former will give them good runs in Europa League/CL and cups, but not be very effective in the league.
Shouldn't be a problem for us specifically per se - Arsenal and Chelsea are equally vulnerable to losing the CL spot right now, and the only way is up for us, given the potential in our squad.

Not so sure about this. Stature seems to mean less and less in today's game. They will be beaten on location by Chelsea, Arsenal, Madrid, PSG, & Barcelona and will be beaten on transfer fees and wages by the clubs in the less cosmopolitan areas; namely us and City.

If United failed to land Bale and Muller with huge bids, I don't see Liverpoool bringing in the elite players on a lower budget just based on history and the manager.

They'll need to hit the jackpot like they did with Torres and Suarez and most importantly keep hold of them when the other clubs come knocking.

I think Martinez know how to coach a defense better than him and that says a lot.

Football is a simple game; Liverpool are in the trap of believing they must have a mystical foreigner or somebody who makes things seem complicated, when really they need Tony Pulis or Sam Allardyce.

For Liverpool's sake, I think they should go after Klopp and give him whatever he wants.

Why would they need Allardyce or Pulis? They are in no danger of relegation and mid-table mediocrity is not their long-term goal. They will find it difficult to catch up with top 4 but they should at least make an attempt. Dortmund were in no better state than Liverpool are in currently when Klopp took over and he took them to Champions League final.

Anfield and their limited marketing potential are holding them back though. There's very little chance that Liverpool will match the revenue of top European clubs. They posted a revenue of £255m for last fiscal year and this was after 19% increase, partially thanks to Champions League football. This is our semiannual revenue and United's EBITDA is around 50% that, and they have to compete with us, Chelsea, City and Arsenal in the league.

Will laugh at the bullshit merchant if he's binned (can't wait to hear his leaving comments), but smile wiped off if they get a decent manager.

I've thought for months that they're gonna get Klopp - which would be a real shame as I'd be forced to hate him! And he might actually make them good...like, really good.

Neymar has come out and said he plays the Barca way.

Basically, Barca are great at tapping up other players, the scumbags.
Then they are in trouble. If he has another good season, he's off.

Hopefully this Ancelotti talk doesn't materialize. He's the most neutral top manager out there but him going there means I'll have to start disliking him.

I honestly don't think Coutinho is anywhere good enough for a move to Barca yet. Unless it's a limited role.
ATM yes I agree but if he has a top season, that could change.

To manage the team. Has Allardyce or Pulis ever taken a club of Liverpoo's spending power down to mide-table?

They play very poor quality of football more often than not and are mid-table managers. Pulis had money at Stoke and weren't able to take them any further, Hughes managed a higher finish than him in his first season there and Hughes isn't even very good. Rodgers did better at Swansea than either of them did at West Ham, Stoke, Palace or West Brom. You can't be serious about employing Pulis or Allardyce at a club with top 4 ambitions.

This was only in January.

Brendan Rodgers: Liverpool can win title next season

Brendan Rodgers insists this Premier League campaign, which has seen Liverpool struggle, was always going to be transitional

Brendan Rodgers is predicting Liverpool will be title challengers again next season as he sees his young squad come of age.

Rodgers insists this campaign was always going to be transitional, but has seen enough to convince him his squad will have significantly improved over the next six months to go head-to-head with Chelsea and Manchester City.

“The reality was, with so many changes, we were not going to win the league this season. I believe we will be ready to challenge for the title next year,” said Rodgers.

“This year was about targeting the top four and the cups. I think this squad has Premier League-winning capabilities. We have young players who can grow together. A win in the cup would provide greater stimulus. You need ready-made quality as well, but this was the year for players to adapt and settle. Come the summer, the period of integration will be complete and then we can compete like we did last year for the title.”

Rodgers has ruled out Daniel Sturridge returning for this weekend’s FA Cup tie with Bolton, but has praised his opposite number – Neil Lennon – suggesting he will soon be leading a side in the Premier League.

“He has done an outstanding job,” said Rodgers. “Neil is someone I know and I was surprised he did not get a Premier League job. At Celtic people do not realise what a difficult job it is - one of the biggest clubs in the world where pressure is on you to win every game.

“He did terrific there as a player and then coaching and management. He did outstanding there in the Champions League and won titles. He served the club incredibly well.

“I thought he was primed for a Premier League club, but he has gone in at Bolton and done a brilliant job. He has made them difficult to play against and it would not surprise me if they got somewhere near the play-offs. In the near future he will be in the Premier League, with or without Bolton.”

Same, unfortunately.

I didn't even dislike him at Chelsea, but he would improve Liverpool.

I would agree, but Rafinha just tore his ACL. If his rehab isn't clean I could see Barca looking for another player in a similar position and Coutinho would make sense. Iniesta will be 32 and coming off a long season (Euros) so they might want another 4-3-3 CM to go with Iniesta, Rakitic, Rafinha and Turan, especially if they figure it's a backup for Messi and Neymar too (Depending on how Munir develops) too.

If he walks in and calmly demands serious money be spent on a DM, CB and GK in the summer he'll immediately produce better results than Rodger, I think.

So many very good signings they could have had like Cabaye but also Payet, Ayew, Gueye and Amavi all of which would of improved them for not much money. Fiminio and Benteke will be good signings but they get so little value and quality from the market.

I actually think their signgings this summer have been fine but it's last summer that has let them down big time. As a result of which and Stevie G leaving they needed more than they got this summer.

I'd imagine he'd bring one or two players from his previous clubs like Isco (well he'd certainly try) and he knows the Italian market very well too.

I really hope nothing substantial comes of this.

Even if they progress to the next round from here (stoppage time being played as I type this), there is no way this can be spun into a positive. Even with all of those shots.
