I think Klopp was wrong to comment re the price of Pogba, but I partly understand why he did, as he genuinely does not believe it’s a reasonable amount to spend, and I suspect he’d say the same about VVD. After all he didn’t agree the fee with Southampton, nor contribute to the money sided negotiations, and never does. If he thinks the amounts are too much, then he thinks they are too much. Privately, I can imagine him saying ‘wow, that’s mental!’
Liverpool are now starting to dine at the top table with transfer fees, and it’s about time too, for a team with the 7th largest income in world football. Net spend also comes in to it, with FSG’s net spend being around 20 million for each window before the past summer. Publicly Klopp has said that the VVD purchase is not dependent on Barca coming in for Cout, but privately, for all we know, it’s already done. (Ala Ronaldo with Madrid).
Klopp has never ‘spent’ this kind of money, nor have Liverpool. He beat Bayern to the title twice in Germany, having spent significantly less, and I am confident he will drive Liverpool forward, but whether he can overturn teams, such as UTD, City and Chelsea, with even bigger budgets, remains to be seen. I suspect City are entering a period of dominance similar to those enjoyed by LFC and MUFC, but hopefully I’m wrong, but Pep is Pep.
