Liverpool - 2017/18

Exactly. It doesn't make any sense at all though. Options : Let him go on a free next Summer or sign a new contract with say a £40m release clause ? OK he can go for free
The problem arises from the precedent set. Every player will demand one, Mane, Salah. Keita will want one too. Then you have clubs like PSG and City who are state funded and can activate these clauses any bloody time they want. PSG did it cause Barca royally fecked them off and that was great entertainment. Say we start dicking them in Europe for a couple years, they have the money to come in and pay literally any fee and take our players no questions asked. Same with city.

Ironically enough I actually love the simplicity of them, however there's no getting around the fact they absolutely decimate your negotiation position as a club in the current market.

What is the general consensus on Can as a footballer these days @RobinLFC ? I have been over to RAWK a couple of times and certainly last season he took a lot of stick from fans on some of his performances. I always found this strange because whenever I have seen him play he looks, technically at least, like a really good young player?
I don't want to lose him as it would set our midfield back. It finally looks like he's gone up a level in his general play so after the early years of frustration, it would be bad to lose him at this point. He's not an elite midfielder by any means since I think he still lingers too much with the ball instead of playing it faster to our wide players, but he's definitely improved over the years. Soon to be 24, maybe he's ready to take his game up another notch, let's see. It doesn't seem like he wants to commit his long-term future to Liverpool though.

The way he's been playing since the tail-end of the season he is well on his way to establishing himself as our best midfielder.

Would be very annoying if we kept him around for his development years only for him to feck off once he becomes a proper player.

Seems a fair summation from what I have seen. Just a bit puzzled as to why he always got so much stick

He was carrying an injury which hampered him quite a bit. Of course most fans have short memories and completely forgot. His performances were lacklustre but he's a proper central midfielder.

No idea. It's like Henderson's and Sturridge's, a couple week often turns in to months. it's a common then under reporting injuries under Klopp. In any case Clyne won't be fully fit till 2018.
Don't worry, it happens the same to Arsenal. "3 weeks out" becomes months

We used to do exactly the same. Phil Jones, Hargreaves and Louis Saha were always "two weeks from fitness" for months sometimes years. Then we would see them for ten mins in a cup game and they would fall off the face again
I don't remember how many "short injuries" had Rosicky :wenger:

There were a lot of question marks when Clyne-less CL team list was announced. But this one seems t obe geniune issue.
Once the player is really injured Klopp seem to give him all the time and a little more. This also happened with Henderson, Sturridge and Ings.
Luckily, we're quite covered in his position. Both TAA and Gomez played quite good so far, not sure Clyne will jump straight into the starting spot once he's available.

It does look like TAA will take over the starting RB spot. If for nothing else, then for his set pieces. Clyne doesn't really offer much going forward, does he?

Yes, he offers much more in attack, but is weaker defensively. Not Moreno level of weakness, but can occasionally lose position. But he's not that type of fullback who takes on opponents. He's better in attack because he's quicker on the ball, faster decision making compared to Clyne.
But my prediction is that Gomez will start as RB against City.

Best Midfielder? Really?

I don't think he is better than Henderson to be honest, he is in great form no doubt but to say best Midfielder is over the top

Losing Mane is a kick in the teeth for them.

Mane will miss games against Burnley and Leicester (in the league and cup). Should manage without him and with Coutinho back in the squad.

Thought they were slighly more dangerous than City before the red card. They know how to play vs the top teams.

I think we'll struggle every CL week to get anything out of these PL games.
Don't think it was a red card, because red card here is basically a message to footballers, to never raise their foot on the ball no matter the situation. Yellow would suffice though. You might disagree, but it's fairly clear that there's no way Mane knew keeper was coming at him with that sort of speed.

In any case, hopefully we don't get completely battered in the 2nd half and can put this defeat behind us as soon as possible.

The Liverpool subreddit was jizzing itself over a stupid van meme, thinking Van Dijk and Lemar were coming. Then nothing happened. And now they still have an awful back 5. It's all so predictable.

City are taking the piss now, brought on Mangala FFS!

Klopp is truly awful.

Plan a goes with the red and there's nothing. Hell have spent the game working on his excuses. Tell us again about our offside goal
