Liverpool - 2017/18

While it may seem slightly underwhelming and expensive, Chamberlain gives us some much needed width which should come in handy, when the fixtures start piling up. Besides, I, like a few others on here, believe that Klopp can actually do something with this guy. Only 23 and certainly has the speed and engine to play in a Klopp system. Time will tell if it pans out the way I hope.

What baffles me is that ze mad german seemingly is more interested in strengthening the offense, where they actually are quite ok. But the defensive line and the goalie, where they seriously lack, is positions where no interest has been shown (afaik). There are more defenders out there besides VVD...

My two pennies is that Oxlade gives them a bit more depth but isn't making their best 11 better. If they get Lemar they'd improve...

But wait until Matip gets injured, their only decent defender. Lots of matches will end 4-3...

They're criminally neglecting their back 5 and it's gonna bite them hard.

Origi is off to Wolfsburg on loan.

Seems like a decent move for all involved. Means Solanke has more chance of cup games, & we still have Sturridge/Firmino to play CF.

Hope he does well.

I wanna see how the lad Robertson does when given a string of games. If he does well, I'm kinda content with him, Matip, and Clyne/TAA. We do need another CB, GK, and DM, though...

Here's what's gonna happen. They won't sign Van Dijk/Lemar but will squeeze enough points to get top 4 at the cost of Arsenal and Spurs. Next year is their year.

They're looking very good annoyingly especially next season with Keita. Got depth as well. They'll be up there for sure.

No depth at the back, that'll be the downfall. Potentially with a few injuries we could line up with a back 5 of Karius, Flanagan, Klavan, Gomez and Moreno.

Enough to give any LFC fan nightmares that.

The tweets that I read earlier from Paul Joyce have got me feeling very excited indeed, VVD & Lemar to come in after we sign AOC apparently. If it happens it's going to be the best transfer window I've ever experienced as a Liverpool fan.

I'll bet you £20 gift voucher for Amazon/ITunes/PSN etc (anything that can be easily sent via PM) that neither of those deals happens tomorrow.

Win/win for me, either I lose £20 and gain a great player or two to get excited about, or I gain £20 to spend on games I won't play on PSN :D

Why do you have to put doubt in my mind now that this won't happen? :nono:

Generally when I bet, I lose. So it's reverse psychology hoping if I bet it won't happen, it will. I'd be made up to see either, or both come in tomorrow. I fear Ox will be all we get though and he excites me as much as the thought of a 3some with Mel and Sue.

What are you smoking? Even if you add Keita, Oxlade, Lemar and keep Coutinho they'd still lack depth in the unaddressed defense since none of those are defensive players...

Ox is great singing for us. I think he is klopps type of player, pressing and all that. Klopp can really make him better considering he is only 24.

About his performance at arsenal? Imo it wont be fair to judge him on that considering how much of a mess they have been in last 2 yrs. Wenger has never really tried to utilize his potential, has used him in various position such was wingback. He will improve under klopp.

There wasn't a peep in terms of giddiness. It was doom and gloom, and rightly so.

What has changed in the meantime to suggest Liverpool 'are back'? They've signed no defenders. There's no alternative to van Dijk. What is there to be more positive about?

I think Liverpool weren't gone anywhere to be honest. We may not be the best but certainly in the mix.

This whole narrative of Liverpool struggling was actually a overreaction of the coutinho saga and watford draw only added fuel to it. suggestions that we would struggle for top-6, Everton are better than us are just laughable.

About the positives -

We haven't performed bad,
5 games 13 goals scored and should have won all 5,
A win against a top 4 rival,
Qualified for champions league,
Got a reasonably good draw,
Coutinho still not sold,
None of the key player left,
Signed salah who has started with a bang,
Both Arsenal and Spurs struggling.

Thats enough positives to start with.

Lemar is expected to start for france today, so that will be very difficult to do unless there are huge movements in next 2-3 hours Lemar will stay. VVD i think can be done in a couple of hours if southampton budge.

The key issue we keep coming back to is the over-buying of attacking midfielders and neglect of CB, keeper and holding midfield. Think Klopp might go to Arsenal when Wenger retires in 2023. Maybe we'll see a top CB come in today but that alone won't solve Liverpool's problems.

Looking like that is it for Liverpool. Oxlade-Chamberlin's arrival doesn't do anything to resolve the problems they're going to have this season.

Two bang average goalkeepers and a coach who can't organise an already poor defence, will see them fall short IMO.

Quite happy they bought Oxlade he's not all that. Lemar would get me worrying though. Or you know, someone who can tackle.

Very frustrating. How Klopp can be happy with his defensive options is beyond me, you could identify our glaring issues in defense after watching one half of football. Outscoring the opponent won't work every time.

I thought Liverpool fans were completely fine with given you have 5 clean sheets in the last 7 premier league games?

I prefer a sample size of the previous four seasons instead of the last seven games in which we fluked some clean sheets - can't remember much about the end of last season but Benteke missed a sitter at Anfield and Arsenal's attack was non-existent. Much like United's attack, I think the start of the season has given us a false indication of how good we are in defense and it will show once the season progresses, especially in the Champions League imo.

That's not true at all. Anyone who watches us can see that there are still serious organisational issues, as well as individual errors. We should have signed a defensive midfielder and a CB.

Go through this thread and you'll find Liverpool fans moaning about the defensive issues since we played Watford.

Not a chance Coutinho leaves and both VVD and Lamar sign now, it's far too late. The ox is all she wrote for em.

This is fecking frustrating, we will be up shits creek come Dec/Jan time. Our players will be knackered too. If we can get Lemar and VVD in we would give ourselves a great chance this season. If we aren't able to get VVD though then surely it's time to give Sakho a go. We can't do this season with just Klavan and Gomez as back ups. One injury to Matip and the other two vs a high line and we're fecked

It looks like your business is over according to Twitter. I personally couldn't see mega money signings happening without Coutinho going the other way. Not sure what to make of Ox either.. he fits Klopp's profile but he's very injury prone and wants to play through the centre where I don't think he's best utilised. The fee is rather big too.

Will be interesting to see how he is used.

Mixed feelings about this window. We've spent a fair bit, but haven't adressed the most obvious problem. Salah looks good and I'm optimistic about Chamberlain, but we really should have used those 35-40m on a capable CB.

Why don't we go for Mustafi? He's decent enough and clearly wants to leave Arsenal.

Because it would make too much sense.
Not at all, he's exposed a lot at Arsenal and would be even more so here. We need someone with the attributes to handle playing in our system. VVD is the perfect fit but failing that honestly we should just 're integrate Sakho.

Hope to feck not and Ox is a good depth option but we need more he can't be a primary target. We're still 3 short I feel but getting minimum 2 in needs to be an urgent priority.

It's weird how certain teams seem to have the same failings year upon year

You have Arsenal and their mentally fragile players who bottle it in most of their big games

Liverpool with their defensive / goalkeeping frailties and yet are constantly signing attacking players.

City with their 'sign everyone for 50 million' but still have defensive issues and massively under-perform in terms of trophies.

United - usually stop 'just one player short' of having a good transfer window. (That is, as a united fan I'm often left feeling that we leave one position weak that could easily have been strengthened).
