Liverpool - 2017/18

The giddiness is back. Multiple Liverpool supporters chiming in to the thread since Sunday. There wasn't a peep in here a fortnight back when Watford took points from you and Coutinho was handing in transfer requests. Palace should've got something at Anfield the following week and it was the same then. Only when you beat a spineless Arsenal team and get linked to some new signings, one of which won't happen this season, has the giddiness returned. To make matters even more hilarious, the other signings you've been linked with are all players in areas you're already well stocked in. There seems to be no alternative to van Dijk. Literally nothing has changed in the past few days to warrant the giddiness on show, but continue on, don't let us stop you.
Wasn't a peep after the Watford game? Go back and read through the thread, it's full of us moaning about our consistently terrible defending after that game.

You're creating a narrative that we're all declaring Liverpool as the champions elect which couldn't be further from the truth. We still need a CB and have serious issues with defending, both individually and collectively. These issues need addressing if we want to be competitive.

It's frustrating because defensively we've been terrible for five years.

There wasn't a peep in terms of giddiness. It was doom and gloom, and rightly so.

What has changed in the meantime to suggest Liverpool 'are back'? They've signed no defenders. There's no alternative to van Dijk. What is there to be more positive about?

Question for Liverpool fans, do any of you actually rate Henderson? From a rival fan's point of view I don't think he's anywhere near good enough to start for a top six side and the fact that he's your club captain is laughable to me.

Also, I agree with what people are saying in here that Liverpool need a defensive midfielder and a centre back but I'm still under the impression that Liverpool's defensive woes are more down to Klopp's tactics.
No I don't rate him at all. If you watch him play for 90 minutes, he'll try five or six Hollywood passes in a game and non of them will come off. He's got a lot of running in him but lacks the quality needed for a side with our aspirations.

I don't really care who is Captain but we definitely need a better player to be our holding midfielder. A Matic type would help.

Have Liverpool been presented with the Premier League trophy yet? Beat a spineless Arsenal team and agree a deal to sign a player next year and the Liverpool lot are in here acting the Billy Big Bollocks again.

It's great to see!

Well it is a thread on Liverpool, you didn't expect them to be miserable did you?:lol:

Well we've made a decent start to the season and qualified for the Champions League group stages. Basically we've played five games so far, winning four and drawing one. We've scored 14 goals in those games and conceded 6.

The defensive issues remain and I'm not sure how we'll handle the December/January period but based on the football played so far, it's hard to be really negative.

We do need a CB though. I can't believe we didn't sign one earlier in the window.

Cry me a fecking river mate. Liverpool fans turning up in a thread called "Liverpool 2017/18" after we've been linked with several players and agreed a deal with one over the last couple of days, shocker. Simply stay out of here if you don't want to read about it.

Only a Liverpool fan can remain positively bullish and upbeat after going 27 years without winning the title. They are an entirely seperate breed from that of your average human being. Not born like the rest of us, rather they are created on a bed of pain and suffering, bitterness and loathing. Devoid of any and all self-awareness, to be replaced entirely by uncontrollable delusion.

Liverpool fans, don't you just love 'em?

So we should be depressed all the time because we haven't won the league for so long? Football is a game to enjoy yourself, you know, not something created to dwell in your own misery.

Flanagan went through a stellar period form in 2013/14. He made the left-full position his own and was a constant marauder down the flank, as well as being solid in defence. As young full-backs go, it was a good first full season in the team.

Anyway, the point I made was simple: Flanagan looked impressive for a young full-back initially but ultimately has amounted to nothing due to a manager failing to prioritise defence. I suspect the same eventuality for Arnold and Robertson.

You might remember him better as "Flanno" and he was hailed as a potential great.

Really? He was sure talked up as one.

Flanagan was surprising in that he was never a big talent, who nonetheless was able to push his way into the first team and do quite well. I don't think anyone ever saw him longterm as more than a squad player whose hard work and determination might make up for his somewhat limited talent. Which in itself would be a success story.

TAA is a totally different level of talent. He has the look of a player who could be a proper first team profile and england regular down the line.

How does the Ox fit into your XI then?

Chelsea went 50 years without winning the title. City went over 40 years. United went 26 years. I don't seem to recall their supporters being that bothered about the fact. The fans of all 3 clubs even had to endure the misery of relegation in between the big gaps of league title success. We Liverpool fans however have never seen our side finish lower than 8th in the top flight for over 50 years :p

Probably in place of Wijnaldum who'll drop to the bench

Excited by the signing? In fairness, I imagine you feel somewhat how I felt when we signed Ashley Young. That worked out...ok?

It's a ridiculous price for a bang average player who's in last year of contract. The transfer market this year is bonkers.

Doubt that, Gini has been very good this season so far. If he plays in the middle it should be at the expense of Henderson, but with I assume no Milner in there not sure who would be captain.

Why they keep buying midfielders and attackers, when their attack is one of the best in the league, instead of improving their defense and gk, i'll never understand.

We'll never hear the end of 'Ox chosing them over Chelsea'.

Think it could only be because he'll get load more game time at pool!

Fighting for whatever spot he can get. Don't think he is coming here's as a given starter. He'll need to prove a lot to get ahead of Wijnaldum.

Still, this is the situation we want to be in town compete on more fronts.

I think Gini is much better tbh - I see aoc as a squad player, a much better one than say Kevin Stewart was last season. His versatility will ensure he gets games when injuries hit. But unless Klopp manages to transform him I can't see him being a regular CM.

Flanagan was the greatest-ever not quite Cafu or Alves full back ever, for fecking yonks - or at least 18mnths - let's not be rewriting history here.

John Flanagan looked a better prospect than them all in Rodgers' 2013/14 team and he couldn't get a game at Burnley last season.

Defenders, particularly young ones, need protection. They will not get that playing in a Jürgen Klopp team. I genuinely can't see them amounting to much considering they'll be eviscerated every single time on the break against a pacy, incisive attack.
There is no way in this world Flanagan has ever looked half the player TAA looks like he will be become.

Goals aren't the issue for Liverpool, it's conceding them at the other end that's the problem. Until that problem is fixed, Liverpool will struggle over the course of a long season.

You simply do not win the premier league with a below average defense.
Agree. Though better organisation and better players (VVD and Keita say) would go a long way to solving the issue without too much change of tactics required.

Well, I know Ox is not the greatest player out there, but I understand why it happened.
He has the attributes Klopp values - physicality, speed, workrate and passion. And he's still young.
And, I must say, rejecting bigger money in more successful club to play where he wants says something about personality. He may be overestimating his abilities, but at least he knows what he wants, has priorities and some balls.

He's not a starter in any way. Klopp usually takes cautious approach to introducing players. Ox will be on the bench or not in the squad at all for some time, "gaining form, understanding team's tactics, etc". More likely Klopp will just take his time to determine the best way to use him and help him develop.

I thought signing Ox meant we're not signing Lemar, but I'm reading we're still in for him, and we're still trying for VVD. When did we get all this money? Coutinho's going surely, I don't recall our revenue being this good.

I'd assume that Lemar coming in would signal Coutinho's departure but I think we were in the green for spending last summer and then didn't spend in January either.

Maybe an inverse Keita deal, agreement reached, part of fee paid now, he stays the season? Otherwise FSG really have spent in a way that seems scarcely plausible given their track record. Who knows, maybe they've decided to actually strike while you seem in a good position rather than building steadily before it crumbles for the umpteenth time - imo a good move if so, that lack of killer instinct when you seem to have momentum is something I've criticised you a lot for in the past.

They're shaping up well, I've gotta say. Even with their defensive shortcomings, Chamberlain's a good signing, not outstanding, but offers a lot of depth to their squad and I could genuinely see him finally develop more there. If they get Lemar they really do have a frightening attack, let's just hope that means Coutinho is off.
