Gerard has predicted City first Liverpool second for this season. Very interesting and bold prediction given Liverpool's wafer thin squad and with European football to add. Thoughts?

Don't you think FSG will demand more?If we get more points than last season, I am calling it passed
I'd suggest that we'll pick up more points against teams we are expected to beat, but conspicuously failed to last season. However our superb record against fellow Top 7 teams in 2016/17 won't go without a hiccup or two (law of averages) this coming season. Swings and roundabouts. If we get more points than last season, I am calling it passed

Meh, I don't expect them to be 6th or 7th which could easily happen, I just think that 2nd is a bit far fetched considering the light weight squad an extra games, he didn't really take that into consideration when asked about his predictions. Going for another top 4 and a cup would have been fair. What's the former captain of the club going to say? "Eh y'know 6th, maybe 7th if they go deep in the cups like la." Of course he's going to be somewhat optimistic.
I'm personally predicting a top 4 challenge. I think us, Spurs, and Arsenal might all be pretty close at the end of it all, as Spurs haven't done enough in the market, and Arsenal are... Arsenal. Can see Chelsea & MC/MU putting a bit of distance between the rest.
In regards to the bolded part, don't you think if we start poorly serious scrutiny would be on Klopp rather than the owners? Considering he seems more than content with the situation of the squad. Time and time again he's confirmed he has the final say so why would the owners get the blame? Unless we are saying FSG aren't making the funds available and moves for players deemed unattainable (Keita) is just for show to say "at least we tried".Would be absolute foolishness if we don't make a couple more signings. Especially with all the noise at the start of the window about how much we're willing to spend. Would bring FSG under serious scrutiny too.
Rumours from Brazil (esporte interativo) that the deal should be done this week.
Dont think that can be true at all. Unless Liverpool are signing someone of similar quality, selling him would be beyond stupid. Maybe they sell him to finance the bid for VVD?. Liverpool in English press seem to be briefing he aint goin anywhere but that is the usual posturing. Will be a huge week to see if he wants to start the season there. I imagine this is the only summer FSG get so much money for him. Barca are cheap as feck usually and sign players at lower prices. I do not think pool get a better deal than this year.
Hope so too, but in Kieta, assuming they get him next year they will have a replacement of equal quality. I is what they do with money this year is what matters. If they sell him, who do they buy that is worth 70-80 million his replacement costs? It'll be Suarez all over again. £80m in the bank and they'll buy 3 squad players that can never replace his quality.
£80 million is two seasons ago. He's not going this summer but if he does it's for over £100 million. Tbh he probably sees us not really investing that much to the squad and that could be helping make his decision to leave. I hope to christ he stays. Feck the money, teams won't even sell us the players we want with the cash we already have stashed in the bank. It'll be Suarez all over again. £80m in the bank and they'll buy 3 squad players that can never replace his quality.

Ideally for them- sell coutinho for 90 million and but Sanchez and VVD for 100 million and they dont drop in level that much. They can also tru for one of PSG'S players who might be available for cheap.

I think this season atleast they have the money to do so. With them throwing 75 million at kieta and readiness to pay 50-60 million for VVD, Maybe they were only gonna sign one. But it looks like they will have the money, wages are a different matter but klopp does give them a little extra that brendan or hodgson wouldnt have. They can't attract players of his quality. That's their problem and why they are a selling club now. Players reach a level and leave. They can't replace them with the same quality so they regress
Higuain the bloody tub of lard left Napoli for around that amount. I can't see us selling him but if he leaves Barca are getting fleeced. I've seen figures as high as £130 million being bandied about. He's not a £100m player. He'll leave for £80m at the most.

Liverpool rejected a £72 million bid for him, why would they accept £8 million more? I reckon it would take at least £100 million for them to even realistically consider an offer. Apparantely Barca is going to lodge a £120 million bid. Liverpool would be damn foolish not to accept £120 million if this is true, there's no way in fecking hell Philippe Countinho is worth £120m. The madness of this transfer market. Football has really gone mad now! He's not a £100m player. He'll leave for £80m at the most.
That bloody tub of lard you mentioned scores goals, lots of goals, he is very consistent in Seria A. I don't get the hype about Countinho. He is at Mhiki/Mata's level IMO and he lacks the consistency to be regarded as a world-class player, there's no way he is worth the amounts being bandied about.Higuain the bloody tub of lard left Napoli for around that amount. I'm sure Juventus must have wish they held on to Pogba for 1 more year, they could have fleeced an extra £50 to £60m from us.
We know they have the millions from the Neymar deal and he's recently signed a five year contract. It'll be closer to £100 million imo. We will see.The Pogba fees quoted were £130m. Suarez was quoted at £100m and it was something like £68m when all was said and done. It won't come to that. It'll be £80m at the absolute max.
Judging by what you said, do you think that Liverpool is open to selling him, despite Klopp's remarks and you guys are just holding on to fleece more from Barca? We know they have the millions from the Neymar deal and he's recently signed a five year contract. Nah give me Coutinho over Higuain anyday of the week, different positions and all but Coutinho is the definition of a big game player and he's improving every facet of his game each season. If it was upto me I wouldn't even sell him for the supposed £120 million, what's the point? Who will really improve us and is available for that kind of money? That bloody tub of lard you mentioned scores goals, lots of goals, he is very consistent in Seria A. Well I can't see Klopp doing a Southampton and holding on to a player that really doesn't want to be there. If Coutinho has asked to leave than I can see us selling him but it would still be for an astronomical amount as we have all the cards.Judging by what you said, do you think that Liverpool is open to selling him, despite Klopp's remarks and you guys are just holding on to fleece more from Barca?
Yep. It's the same thing with Barca. If Coutinho goes they will give us a load of that Qatar cash and whichever teams' player/s we go after are going to try and rob us blind. I wouldn't even be mad if we ended up getting fleeced if it's for a quality player who will improve us but with Coutinho going it's not worth the gamble. He's a class player so I don't want to envisage him going. Even next summer .Especially this late in the window. If inevitably he is to go, then you're better off having an internal agreement with him in place so he can leave next summer. This way you leave yourselves adequate time to source a replacement.
On the contrary, I don't believe Klopp would permit his team to be decimated with the season about to start and CL qualifiers on the horizon. PC has shown he loves the club and the city, so if a gentleman's agreement is made to sell him to Barca next season (and there is no way it'll be under £120m), he'd not kick up a fuss at all and that satisfies all parties (well maybe Barca not quite so much but I'm not sure they really expected to get him this Summer - he's a replacement for Iniesta not Neymar, that's Griezmann, and next season would be acceptable).Well I can't see Klopp doing a Southampton and holding on to a player that really doesn't want to be there. There's no way you won't sign more players. It really is astonishing, if we don't sign more players. We have four tournaments to play in this season, and our squad is thin a f. Both our midfield and defence could do with an upgrade for the starting line up as well.
A couple of injuries and we're back to having teenagers on the bench. I'm starting to get worried, I must admit.
There's no way you won't sign more players.
You'll have the Coutinho money in the bank by Friday, that will be used on VVD I reckon.
This is the outcome I would prefer. Him leaving this summer is out of the question if we want to compete. On the case of his value though, do you have any idea why people would think we would consider selling him below £100 mil? It wouldn't even be entertained imo.To the contrary, I don't believe Klopp wouldn't permit his team to be decimated with the season about to start and CL qualifiers on the horizon. Klopp says improving on what he's already got isn't easy and he's prepared to push on with Ragnar Klavan and Joe Gomez providing back up for his first choice centre-back combination of Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip.
"We have four (centre-backs). I don’t think we need more," Klopp said.
"Joe is in a really good way but it was not his day (against Athletic Bilbao). He made his life difficult with a few passes but things like this happen.
"In the moment I’m fine. We are open until the 31st (of August). We cannot force the things and we would never get a centre-back just because.
"We have the need, we have some but you don’t take any. It doesn’t work.
"Look out there and tell me five that would make us stronger, five. Then you win a prize! It’s difficult how it is.
"I’m happy. You can imagine we still work on different things and we will see if it works.
"I am here to work with this squad and not just always thinking ‘but if we don’t get this or this’. No. We could play tomorrow. It’s better that we don’t have to but we could play tomorrow."
Liverpool may have only made three signings so far this summer, but Klopp is adamant that the improvement in players like Alberto Moreno and Ryan Kent has further strengthened his hand ahead of next Saturday's Premier League opener at Watford.
"I’m really fine with pre-season so far. What I said in there is the truth," he added.
"All this talking about signings and then Alberto Moreno what a pre-season, you were part of it, you saw it. He has matured 100%.
"Ryan Kent looked unbelievable, really strong. Dom (Solanke), maybe a few guys expected that, maybe not. That’s cool and I cannot ignore it. I don't want to ignore it.
"Let’s wait until August 31. Then we will talk about it (the strength of the squad). Why should we talk about this today?"
Was he signing Van Dijk to play him in midfield then? He better be trolling those reporters. From James Pearce in the Echo
