Liverpool 2016/17 - Performance and chat thread.

Are there any attacking players in your side who like staying wide as opposed to playing wide and then cutting in? Obviously it's more complicated than that but Liverpool do seem to lack width when they need it atm.
Yes I agree. Width is a problem but it's typical Klopp as he prefers his width to come from the FBs. Ojo (injured, LW) is a promising youngster who's been given a place in the first team squad but isn't yet ready for prime-time. Wijnaldum can perhaps play that part but due to injuries and fitness he's been drafted into CM (not where he should be playing, his best performances coming at LM/LW) and Mane can of course.

Maybe that's why Klopp likes Moreno so much. Going forward he's pretty good... it's when we're on the defensive that's when it all goes so wrong.

Mane can offer genuine width, although he does like to float around centrally. Firmino, Wijnaldum, Sturridge, Origi and Coutinho can all play out wide but there best work comes in field. Ibe was the only genuine winger, and they have sold him so Klopp must be happy with the situation.

Ta all. Yeah, much as I've slagged him, if he was in the right condition to play Moreno would have retrospectively been better suited the Burnley match (where you had the ball but not so much the penetration) than Milner imho.

Breaking teams down has been a problem for a while for us, we gifted them the early goal and then they sat back so almost putting them in counter attack mode and we struggled in the final third.
Mane would have helped but we can't rely too much on one player, especially a recently signed one.

It was just a bad day all round, nobody really performed on the day and we ended up with far too many wayward shots from outside the box.

What's the problem with Daniel Sturridge? All over the back pages about his position.
I hate when players complain about not playing in their favourite position. It's a fecking team game. And it's not like the position is alien to him.

Not entirely sure Klopp was questioned about him being played out wide, supposedly Sturridge wasn't happy about it but said it's a team game and sometimes you have to adapt.

I suspect the media have exaggerated it all.

That said, he has to play central for me, he is a goalscorer after all.

It doesn't matter where he plays because he always does the same thing ! Drifts wide right or comes deep to get on the ball. So if he starts wide or central it's irrelevant - he should know this !

Was on a couple of back pages last this morning. And Klopp was asked about it in his presser. He said he hasn't spoken to Daniel about it and doesn't need to. I hate when players go to the press to complain about things like this. He did the same at Chelsea.

Worst culprit is Walcott. Crying about being a striker, Wenger gives him chances and he doesn't impress, this season he suddenly wants to be a right winger.

I saw a 12 year old kid wearing a Liverpool shirt near my house today. I have yet to see a City shirt over here.
Liverpool are still bigger than City, but I wonder how he got into them. They have not done anything that would get them on the TV over here and have no links to Japan. Could be his dad is a fan.
It was nice to see, though.

Balotelli been linked with a couple of clubs Nice (France), FC Sion (Switzerland).

He has already held talks with the French club.

Coutinho, Can & Origi all very doubtful for game at Tottenham tomorrow.

Red is a much more popular colour than blue in Asia ;)

What are your expectations for your game at Spurs?

Spurs have had a sluggish start from what I've seen. Pool were shite against Burnley but confidence might be up after battering Burton? If Mane turns up you'll win imo.

Hard to say with us - it is typical to beat Arsenal and then lose to Burnley.
With a difficult start to the season it's hard to gauge how many points you would be happy with overall, we play Leicester next.

I don't see the game being boring, I think there will be goals and even without Coutinho we offer a real attacking threat and Mane is fit again also.

I can see a high scoring draw but obviously we have to look for the win, and I think we could create a few chances. We have to be more solid at the back though, be interesting to see if Matip starts.

Haven't seen any of Tottenham's games go far.

Yeah, it's literally the same shit him every year, especially when there's some contract negotiations going on.

Klopp's first game, think it was Spurs was uneventful. I can see Poch trying to spoil the game. He's can be very pragmatic if he wants to. Both sides are capable of giving each other a serious beating. I think both coaches would be happy with a draw this early, and that's what we will get imo.

When did Mane turn into a player who can decide a game on his own against a strong side as Tottenham?:wenger:

Haven't been that impressed by Spurs or Liverpool thus far. Liverpool obviously showed how well they can attack against Arsenal, but the complete opposite the following week. Tough tie to call - as Spurs haven't got going at all yet I feel Liverpool would slightly edge it, but home advantage plays a part. I'd wager a score draw.

I think them losing at Burnley was a bit of freak result. I think they're better than that with 1st XI all playing. Can & better CB than Klavan missing, very good 2nd minute goal for Burnley, equally well timed goal number 2 just before HT to keep Burnley belief levels high.

They just seem so much weaker without Can in the MF. The DM & LB non-purchase strategy just looks more & more wrong to me. Just fundamental improvement you'd get straight away, Can goes forward one, the front 4-6 look a more solid unit as far as team shape, any defending that you think they might do, or have less responsibility, take your pick... Milner doesn't have to play out of position, on his wrong side & Moreno doesn't have to play at all, if you don't want, :)

No better than a draw at Spurs if the injury rumours are true would my prediction though. 6pts is not far off par for these first games anyway. Didn't want them getting 12++ from 15 through a set of fixtures having away trips to Arsenal, Spurs, Chelsea & only 1 home game, did we? :( :(. Burnley done well.

I'd suggest that Klopp's plan of a flying start has been thwarted by pesky injuries & the wallet tightness of Fenway meself. All very unfortunate but I think they will improve when the compensating run of home games materializes & relative to the others, they are playing only once a week, as we call it.

Some good points there. We have struggled against so called weaker teams and the result of sloppy play against Burnley meant we played into their hands as they could sit deeper and keep the game tight.

I don't think Klopp has been severely restricted (within reason), financially. I just think he doesn't like to pay significantly over the odds for players.
That said we can't compete with United and City for example.

It is also clear as I posted on the Klopp thread yesterday he is really shifting out a lot this summer.
11 so far sold and over a dozen released from contract also.

I think he is paving the way for less frantic future windows where a smaller number of incomings and outgoings occur - which is ideally what should happen anyway but hasn't yet been possible.

Thanks JB, this is the interesting bit for me.

We have struggled against so called weaker teams...

For breaking them down & scoring we mean isn't it? So, there's a disconnect between a team that obviously does score goals & then in different games struggles to do so, & is then undone by still conceding stupidly / at the same rate.

I would think he should (overall) have solved this by a slight reduction in the conceding (GK to arrive if nothing else) & more pace / penetration through Mane. Easy / easier wins in an increased decent % of the home games would be the obvious place you should see this. I still think they might go well enough for to be having a definite run at the Top 4.

And yes, maybe he thinks a complete overhaul of everything is too much, fillet the entire squad & this theme of building this thing together starts to look a bit hollow isn't it? Also, he shouldn't really be under pressure this year, given the reaching of 2 Finals, the nice long contract & improving on 8th, well... you'd imagine he thinks that he's a good enough Manager with a good enough team to be doing that, surely.

We don't get enough 'hard earned' wins - going to West Ham and scraping a 1-0. Games you need to win to compete at the higher end of the league.
We struggled to break defences down and lacked pace. Mane now fit again is an obvious plus so we will have to see how he goes.

Also we lack a top drawer controlling midfielder who is good on the ball and can dictate the play. We also do not manage games well enough, Arsenal was a good example it should never have got as close as 3-4.

Burnley might have just been a day off but packed organised defences we struggle against. He may need to look at changing the formation and getting some more steel in the midfield.
Perhaps trying to fit in Lallana, Coutinho and Firmino makes the team a little lightweight at times. We have conceded too many goals for several seasons now.

The squad was too big and with no Europe many players weren't going to get a game, clearly he is looking at trimming the squad and hopefully getting some quality in.

I dont think our defence is as bad as people think, we've conceded the fewest shots in the league. Its not our defenders fault virtually every shot on target ends up in the back of the net. Mignolet has conceded 5 from 5 on target in the league. He is quite literally the worst keeper in the league, his save percentage is at the bottom of the pile.

And i swear i saw similar stats to these circulating at one point last season too. Its atrociously bad and beggars belief hes even considered good enough to be a no2. He may re discover his form at another club and eventually develop in to a good GK, but his career here is done.

It's absolute bollocks to blame Mignolet for any of those 5 goals though, Arsenal's 2nd may be dubious but any keeper would struggle to save it when moving one way and then having it deflected the opposite. It is really a freak stat but suits the anti-Mignolet narrative. And I am most certainly not a Ming fan.

That doesn't complete story at all. From what I remember none of the goals were GK's fault.

Joe Hart?
I wouldn't mind Hart in and Mignolet out at all. He's better than Mignolet and I'd rather Karius+Hart fight it out for #1. Hart can be a right tosser/dolt at times but he's still better than Mignolet the majority of the time, and he's only 30, still young for a keeper.

We have made an £11 million bid for the 17 year old Borussia Dortmund Winger.

11 goals and 9 assists in 32 games last Season.

Source Tony Barrett.

Now I wouldn't mind this lad at all, can play on both wings and would be an excellent backup to Mane however if I was him I wouldn't consider it, he won't get 32 games as a 17/18 yr old here. Added to which of course, although grabbing outstanding youth is always a good policy, it's a mystifying offer. I would much rather see a strong CM and a LB !

It also brings into question the Wijnaldum signing. Surely he wasn't bought for CM when his best performances were at RM/RW ?

Been reported that he'll turn the offer down in favour of staying at Dortmund which is probably sensible given his age.

He seems to be very good at such a young age. Dortmund have an enviably young and exciting team. I just hope they don't all get lured away from the club because if they all play together in 5-10 years time together they could really be a great attacking force.

In related news Liverpool has made a 32 million Euro bid for Lionel Messi. So Pulisic had arguably the best 2016 of any 17 year old in Europe so far and Dortmund is giving him away for free, cause Liverpool and Stoke ask nicely? The price tag is a joke. His marketing value alone: an American with the potential to be world class? Dortmund won´t sell him at all and certainly not for less than €50M.

Call it bollocks if you want, hes an absolute atrocity with the worst save percentage in the league.

He's normally a great shot stopper though, it's his distribution & commanding of his box that are a problem.

I wouldn't read too much into his save percentage this early into the season. None of those goals could've been prevented.

Well, it shows our... luck? I'm not sure what to call it. We've restricted a lot of chances but when they happen they tend to fly in! *sigh*

Its a myth, hes good at saving shots from long range and thats about it. And im talking his save percentage over the last 12 months. Hes absolutely awful and it baffles me that continued feck ups by him are attempted to be pushed under the carpet. At least with moreno as god awful as he is you can see hes there to provide width in a way nobody else really can. Karius's injury is incredibly unfortunate. Our season literally hinges on a spine of Karius Matip and Can hitting the ground running. If not then its going to be a marginal improvement league wise on last season.

On a brighter note happy with the Pulisic link, a quick winger. We looked noticeably blunt against burnley without mane and adding depth in his positon with someone with similar attributes helps address the balance and ensures that it wont happen again.

Christ. That's asking a lot of a Bayern castoff, a 23 year old keeper with 1 under-21 caps and no senior caps and a CB who Kicker had outside the top 15 at his position in the Bundesliga for the 2nd half of last season. None of these players being near the normal prime years for their spots.

It was criminal for Klopp/Liverpool to have spent 25M on Winaldum when they could have bought a proper LB, CB or DM for that kind of money. There's still not a guy in their back 6 I'd feel comfortable trying to win a league or get to the final 8 of a CL with apart from Clyne, who is a solid no-frills FB without much upside but who is mobile, competes hard and rarely seems to end up badly out of position. I guess Karius could be at least that good but I haven't seem much of him.
