Liverpool 2014/15 | WARNING: Contains strong amounts of Scouse nonsense

It's not something I would be happy to report as 'defensively sound' without cooking the circumstances just a little bit. But fair play to him if he wants to do that.

No matter how much you cook the circumstances, you can never claim they were defensively sound/exemplary without sounding deluded.

Wait, they finished higher than 9 teams and had a defensive record better than 9 teams? Sounds pretty standard.

So for a newly promoted team to have that defensive record is standard?

No matter how much you cook the circumstances, you can never claim they were defensively sound/exemplary without sounding deluded.

You can easily argue it. That's a good defensive record for any team outside the top 7.

*mod edit. I've stuck this rubbish under a spoiler, where it belongs ;)

Swansea under rodgers played a lot more cautious and deep than we do

Glen Johnson will miss Liverpool's trip to Tottenham on Sunday with a thigh injury.

The Reds right-back limped out of Monday's 3-1 defeat to Manchester City.

Brendan Rodgers is also sweating on the availability of Martin Skrtel (knee) and Alberto Moreno (ankle) ahead of the game at White Hart Lane.

However, £23million summer signing Adam Lallana could make his debut in the capital after recovering from the knee ligament injury he suffered in pre-season. Lallana is likely to start on the bench.

Neither Skrtel nor Moreno have been able to train since the setback at the Etihad Stadium.

Rodgers said: “Young Moreno twisted his ankle and has been recovering well.

“Sunday could be difficult for Glen Johnson and as for Martin Skrtel we will see how he responds over the next 48 hours.”

Javier Manquillo is set to replace Johnson at right-back with Jose Enrique on standby to start on the left if Moreno doesn't recover in time.

If Skrtel is sidelined, centre-back Mamadou Sakho would make his first start of the season alongside Dejan Lovren.

Injury news actually working out well then :D

I used to be one of those fans that defended Johnson but even I've given up on him now.

Glen Johnson injured - poor Spurs. That's a HUGE advantage gone then. :D

Its been a while since we've played with 11 men, wonder what it will feel like. Might need Balotelli to get a quick red to bring us back into our comfort zone. ;)

A bit of a banter, no hard feelings Liverpool fans? :)

Let them score their first competitive goal against us before taking the high seat. The record between the two teams still stands at 6-0 in our favour.

Benzema, James, Bale, Ronaldo against your defense.. Wov. But who knows maybe you'll get better in that department.

It's alright, if they get past our defence we have super Simon in nets to past.

As world class as Aguero is, and he is world class obviously, its surprising how he's often beaten at these stats by others (usually LFC players). Who's next to beat him? Balotelli? ;)

I'd be looking to bring in Cech or Valdes.

Would be stunned if Chelsea would be willing to sell/loan us Cech to be honest. Though I'd happily take him, and I'd be looking at Valdés too if he fitness is up to it.

A top class team with a top class strikeforce. Doesn't always work out how you'd expect. A few days after beating you 4-1 we beat Real Madrid 4-0. They had an attacking quartet of Raul, Robben, Higuain, & Snejdar.
It doesnt always work of course. All I said it will be interesting, your defence against that kind of attacking force.

Our intense pressing, high tempo game, was key to our win the last time we played against Real Madrid. A lot of European nights at Anfield tend to fire up our players to incredible levels. If the crowd & players are up for it the night Madrid come to town, then the Spanish side will struggle to live with us, & their forwards may not get many opportunities to actually test our 'fragile' defence.

The 'Anfield effect' was the reason we got to 2 CL finals in 3 years with a lot of players who wouldn't have gotten anywhere near likes of Real Madrid & Barca.

I'm sure they'll manage to cope with the mighty Anfield.
Ronaldo scoring a goal or 2 there, that would be such a nice story. :)

Just like their 'mighty' counterparts did 5 years ago you mean ?
Apples and oranges. If sthing like that happened 5 years ago does it mean it will happen this year?

Yeah, I thought so.

This year's Madrid is clearly a lot better than Madrid 5 years ago too.

Looks like Agger is off. To Brondby of all places. 3 fecking million, complete joke decision to let him go. If it was up to me he'd start every game when fit.

Agger is heading back to Brondby for £3m according to the Echo and Times. Not arsed about the fee as long as he's getting the move that he wants (and I know that's a stupid way to do business).

Rodgers' comments have also made it clear that Borini should leave. A bit harsh on the lad, but I hope he leaves and we get the £14m.

End of the day, if we press & deny them time & space, they'll be no different to the many other very good sides that have been dismantled at Anfield over the years. If we stand back & let them play, it'll probably be a different story. I'm pretty sure our manager will go to great lengths to ensure our players are aware of the implications of settling for the latter. Our style of play is better suited to playing the likes of Real Madrid rather than Athletico Madrid.

If you say so.

For all that pressing and denying Madrid will certainly have a chance or 2 or more to check the state of your defense.

I like Rodgers but he's made a mess of this. From vice captaincy to bench? It's no wonder he wants to leave. I've been clear about how I think we should be starting him, but even if Rodgers didn't agree why the feck do you reject big money bids only to bench him for a season and sell him on the cheap?

He has his flaws but he's still our best defender for me. Sad to see him go but Brondby will be good for him - one of the most genuine footballers out there; was never interested in the lures of Barca/City and the only player in our squad along with Gerrard/Flanagan who I feel is a genuine LFC man.

Interesting (and sad) article on Balotelli.

He rejected big money bids for him in his first season. Agger has gotten progressively worse since then. I'm not arsed about the fee.

Agreed with regards to the last part (I don't think he's our best defender). He's one of the few players who actually loves the club and the city. He's as loyal as they come.

Bizarre from Rodgers in my opinion. I actually quite rate Agger and thinks he definitely better and less of a liability than Skrtel and Sahko.
