Well, that wasn’t good. That result hurt and it hurt badly. That said, I do think there were some positives to take from the game despite having been drubbed 3-0. Firstly, that was probably our best performance of the season since the Spurs game. I thought, in general, we played well. In possession we were good and we created enough chances to win the game. It was clear once Sterling missed that third sitter that we were never going to score today. He looks knackered, by the way. I have said this in the past and I stand by it, Rodgers should rest him until Sturridge is fit again. It would do him the world of good. Markovic looks to be finding some form now so he would be a like for like replacement. I keep saying things like “if Sturridge had been on the end of that, he would have scored” and “We win that game with Sturridge” and while we probably would have scored at least a couple of our chances had that been the case, that excuse is getting very old. He’s been out for four months. We should have some sort of solution to grind out results by now. This is not good enough.
I liked most of the team selection by Rodgers before the match. Obviously would have liked to have seen Sakho in instead of Lovren or Skrtel, Toure in instead of Johnson, Can in instead of Allen and Markovic in for any one of the other attacking options, but it was still a major improvement selection wise from what we have been seeing. Jones wasn’t too bad. Thought his play on the third goal was shocking, but in truth, he did not have much to do besides pick the ball up out the back of his net. I would definitely continue with him in the side. Lacked any command of his box though. From where I was standing I could hear him and there was little communication from him. I don’t think any of our defenders had a good game with the exception of Toure and Henderson. Henderson missed, not an easy chance, but a chance I would expect him to score with that header. Allen (think it was him) was left completely exposed by Moreno who decided to go galavanting off doing God knows what. Thought it was ridiculously harsh to pull Lallana off especially for Balotelli. Markovic should have been the first player to be brought on. Gerrard was not anything special, do not think he was awful either. Just had an average game in general, with a few very nice long passes. Coutinho played well, not enough movement with Sterling the only player who really offers a run in behind. Sterling should have scored. I’ve seen the replay of his strikes and it looks like he should have two, possibly three goals. De Gea makes some good saves on them, but Sterling’s finishing was appalling. Balotelli should score a couple as well. It was on his strikes that De Gea made his best saves. He was incredible. I’ve had enough of Balotelli though and I don’t actually think he was that bad overall today. It’s just his little petulant acts or silly challenges that get to me. I’m at the point where now I am actually hoping that he gets banned by the FA because I can’t watch another one of his strikes from three hundred metres away from the goal. I like Markovic. There’s a player in there.
Onto Rodgers: I do not think he’s going to be able to turn this around. He’s a good manager, but I think we have lost too much confidence and I do not think Rodgers is going to be able to recover from this. I am not calling for him to be sacked yet as I think sacking managers in the middle of the season is a bad plan (the best replacements for him in Klopp, Benitez [lol] and De Boer would be unattainable at this point anyway), but I do think, barring some miraculous turnaround, he should walk at the end of the season. One of our greatest ever managers and our best ever player was sacked for less. Do not think the race for top four is over, but it’s going to take a massive turnaround to get there. It has to start with a win against Arsenal. Rodgers needs to stop playing whatever political games he’s playing and get our best players on the pitch and that includes Sakho and Can.
