Liverpool 2014/15 | WARNING: Contains strong amounts of Scouse nonsense

Not sure about Owen but Torres must be thanking his agent daily for making the transfer happen. On top of great wages and living in London, he won everything there's to play for at Chelsea, except the league title, which he may yet get. Most players would trade adulation from fans for much bigger salary and a chance to win trophies.

Torres was on the slide regardless and Owen went on to play for bigger clubs in Madrid and United albeit not a starter as he would have been for Liverpool.

As it stands today this is the first Liverpool side without at least one genuine "star" since shanks arrival. It goes without saying their trophy laden era had plenty but when the decline started they had Fowler, Mcmanaman then Owen and Gerrard and eventually Torres and Gerrard enough to at least win the odd cup. Suarez was the last of the mohicans.

Quite excited for the upcoming season. We will surprise a few people.

Also can't wait for the new season.

I think you'll still be strong, Rodgers has proved he can get players to improve their game (Henderson, Sturridge etc) and get a good system in place but you won't be challenging for the title imo. And that is a massive relief. You went worryingly close last time.

Think you'll be there with us battling to get top 4. You may have come 2nd last time but there's been a fair swing in terms of you losing Suarez, Arsenal signing Sanchez, Chelsea Fabregas & Costa, City with Mangala and Pellegrini more familiar with the English game, Utd without Moyes & some new life in midfield, Spurs with Pochettino who showed what he can get out of players at Southampton, and Martinez who is doing a fine job at Everton. It should be a brilliant season ahead!

Last season, particularly during the run in, our home support was excellent.

The atmosphere last season was fantastic, in all parts of the ground.

I agree it will be extremely competitive this season, however I think we need to wait until the transfer window concludes before we judge squads too much. Of course Suarez was our world class player and one whom we probably cannot replace, but we do have the funds to spend & if can get get Markovic and maybe someone else we have very exciting attacking options. Many on here didn't think we would get top 6 last season.

If we're counting Owen as a "star", Sturridge scored more goals last season than Owen has in any one season throughout his entire career. I wouldn't write the team off as a bunch of average nobodies until the season is underway, because someone may always step up to fill the void left by Suarez.

At least we didn't have to start a 'singing section' to create one.

That can't be something that other fans of big teams are going to insult us for surely? We've taken steps to improve our atmosphere, which to be fair was a lot better than normal last year. You'd know that if you went to the game where you thumped us and you couldn't hear the Liverpool fans at all.

It wasn't an insult. The atmosphere at Old Trafford & Anfield hasn't always been fantastic. I wasn't at the United v Liverpool game (I was at the Anfield one).

How many would Owen have scored with a Suarez alongside?

Owen at his best was several levels above Sturridge I'm surprised a Liverpool supporter would even attempt to argue otherwise.

Arguably Sanchez was the answer but he chose Arsenal unless Rogers can pull a rabbit out the hat my point remains. Sturridge and Sterling are decent but no way are they top drawer.

Not at the game I was at.
Started of well with the pre recorded stuff but soon petered out and by the 2nd half when fans realised the dream was going to be over...it was pin drop scenario.
So, maybe in that case it was just a one off due to the enormity of what was happening on the pitch

I'll be very surprised if Liverpool make the top 4 unless they sign a serious top quality replacement for Suarez. Many don't seem to realise how much he actually did. Even when he wasn't scoring, he was assisting or making runs and being double marked, freeing up space for others. So far, for me, they've went down the Spurs route of buying quantity. Lallana is absolutely bang average, he is only lauded as he is more technical than most English. Players like him are a dime a dozen in Spain.

I rate Bony but he wouldn't be anywhere near Suarez at all. If he signs what do Pool fans expect the line-up to be next season? Although they played two strikers, Suarez was good enough to seeminly wonder everywhere when I watched him. Sturridge, nor any striker Pool have been linked to can do that. I reckon they'll finish 5th/6th.

But they just came a close second in the league and have the most exciting upcoming manager who is a miracle worker. Even suggesting that at this stage it looks like Man City, Chelsea, Man Utd and Arsenal have stronger squads is being daft.

My Liverpool supporting mate fears for Liverpool's chances now. He reckons it will be a fight between us and them for the 4th Champions League spot.

Which game were you at? Even after the Chelsea games our atmosphere was still fantastic as a way of thanking/showing support to the players who had given us a season full of mad fun.

United and Arsenal had stronger squads than us last season also, yet we finished comfortably above both. Despite Suarez leaving we should have more options, especially on the bench where often last season we were very limited.

I was at the liverpool chelsea as I was the year before that.

My gut says 4th spot will be between Arsenal and Liverpool. And so far, I like what Arsenal has done better this transfer period bringing in Sanchez. Now, if they can just get a top striker.

This is addressed to @BarneyLFC or any other Liverpool supporter. Do you prefer Markovic to Konoplyanka? He's roughly double the price and about 3.5 years younger than Konoplyanka. While both appear to be talented, technical wingers, I'd think that Markovic is more of a prospect while Konoplyanka would contribute more immediately. Was little surprised to see Liverpool lose interest in him. Another case of "In Rodgers we trust?"

We do have quite a decent lad called Daniel Sturridge in the squad. Scored 10 league goals in 14 games in his first season, & 21 goals in 29 games in his second. Also scored 9 in 10 when Suarez was serving his ban. He seems to have slipped under the radar in all the furore over Luis Suarez. Quite funny really when you remember that Michael Owen never once scored more than 19 league goals in any one season with us, yet people recall him as a world class player. Although TBF, I think he'd have filled his boots had he been playing under Brendan Rodgers, just in the same way that Suarez & Sturridge have, & just in the same way that any decent striker will do when he's eventually brought in.

It's more a case of: 'In our scouts we trust'

Because he did it consistently, for clubs across England and Europe, for England national team at various tournaments and stages.

He also picked up a European player of the year award and actually won the premier league with Manchester United (if you can't beat them, join them).

Scoring goals for Liverpool is not what made him world class, FYI, it's a combination of things that led to this recognition.

Edit: I find it shocking that as a United fan I have to tell you why he was world class when most of his best achievements was when he wore the red of Liverpool.

I don't understand what's happening at Liverpool.

They've got a great owner and a manager who is sensible and understands football in 2014, yet their transfer policy is again absolutely clueless.

They've got a lot of money to spend and yet they're chasing players like Bony, having already acquired Lambert. It's like Harry Redknapp's taken over.

This has been immensely uninspiring up to now. They'd better hope there's better around the corner.

I'm delighted by this, aren't you?

It suits me. And, indeed, everyone else.

It's just bizarre though.
His track record for transfers is hardly great though is it. Not remotely surprised.

What let them down last season was their defence, although you could argue it was the way Rodgers set them up to play.

Has that been addressed?

It's always been the same at Liverpool. They've been one of the biggest spenders of the PL era yet have zero titles to show for it.

Suarez was pretty average for the last couple of months of the season (compared to his mid-season form), yet we continued to motor towards the title until you know what. This is a genuinely good Liverpool side, much unlike Spurs whom were literally Gareth Bale FC. We've improved squad depth (no more Aspas/Moses as our go to options from the bench) and will add further.

For me, we can be compared to some extent with Dortmund/Atletico - there is an effective system in place (which is more important than any individual); this, more than anything was the reason we had a successful season. Rodgers will look to sign players whom fit into that way of playing, and I don't believe we'll see a massive drop-off from last season. I think we will be looking to challenge for the league title again.

Rodgers performed masterfully last season. He recognised that the defence was weak so he ramped up the attacking football to try to outscore every team they played, which, for the most part, they did comfortably.

The players that destroyed you last season were the derided Henderson, Inter reject Coutinho and Chelsea/City reject Sturridge. If you think it was just all Suarez then I pray your manager under rates the same way again. Carry on.

In the 5-1 game, Suarez was poor actually. Weirdly.

I rate the manager. I rate a lot of the existing players. What I don't rate is your plan to improve them.

My biggest worry is Sturridge will be offered crazy money next summer. He excited me more than Suarez at times and that while he played second fiddle. Now there's no hiding his talents which will be even more prevalent when Coutinho, Sterling and Markovic are feeding him only.

You make it sound like Suarez was just another player in a brilliant system. The truth is he was, on last seasons form, the third best player in the world. 30 plus goals and who knows how many assists and pens won. His work rate was excellent. Pressing and stretching back fours like no other forward.

I'll be truely amazed if you challenge for the title like you did this year. It's early days but so far everyone else at the top has strengthened their starting XI while yours has weakened.
