Lisandro Martinez | Signs for United

If he's good at player out from the back, him and Erikson (maybe FDJ if he comes) should improve our passing in the buildup big time with Malacia adding to our intensity and dynamism.

No point in us going that high. He's always going to go to his former manager, he'll probably prefer the centre back position at Utd to the left back position we had earmarked for him, plus it looks like we need to find funds for a new defensive midfielder which wasn't planned for.

Can't think of the last player we signed in recent times that has had anything close to this kind of edge/aggressiveness. Probably Herrera. We've been missing it

Lisandro will make a bigger difference to our team than even FDJ imo. Being e defensive player and very tenacious… qualities in short supply in our team. Eriksen, Garner and other number 8’s kinda make up for some of FDJ qualities though not as good.

Our build up will be completely transformed. Malacia and Shaw are both very good with build up, Dalot isn't bad either on the other flank. Martinez and Maguire/Varane and we'll have a very comfortable on the ball back 4, that can bring it to Frenkie and Eriksen in the midfield 3. Sancho in the front 3 as well. It'll have players who are capable of being playmakers all around the pitch. Just needs the right balance defensively and the goalscorer, but i think with Ten Hag's coaching and these few additions that we'll see a massive improvement. A bunch of players who are press resistant for a change, and comfortable at bringing the ball out from the back and through the lines. And most importantly, actually receiving the ball under pressure, something I always felt we avoided doing.

Told you guys this would get sorted this week. Ajax will accept this, they'd be crazy to refuse.

Is he worth the money mate? I’ll hold my hands up and say other than him being class on football manager a couple of years ago and him still shopping in the boys 7-16 section in Primark , I know nothing about him

Still depends on us signing FdJ though. Absent him, the whole thing falls apart.

I also wonder if Ronaldo / Rashford at CF can actually receive a ball under pressure and lay it off or manage a turn towards goal. Guys like Jesus, Firmino etc are masters of this. Martial's pretty good at it too.

Triple his salary? What is he currently on?
This. Why the need to triple his salary? If hes on lets say 50k a week a doubling to 100k surely is enough to start with. Offer 50k a week more max whatever he is on.

I’m fairly certain that after one season, Martinez will be deemed the best CB currently at the club. I’m 100% certain no one will ever say he’s slow by then

Hopefully this turns out a better signing then rojo did. I love the Argentines though because they show a lot of fight and passion. He’ll be a tough defender. Only thing that’s worrying and everyone’s saying it, is his height. Hopefully though we’ll be more dominant next season and will have less chances created against us.

Because they are not working 9-5 jobs where they will be negotiating new salary based on old salary + some percentage.

Varane was once known to be quite a pact CB, but last season I thought he was quite lumbering and awkward. Based on last season I'd have him about level with Lindelof. In fact I had reservations when we signed him after watching him hopelessly try to defend against City in the CL, particularly Sterling who had him in toast and made him look amateur.
Yes I thought the same. It smacked of another player on the decline through injuries coming for a big payday. This proved correct when he was injured for quite a few patches of the season.

The answer that's still unknown is how do we line up, with Martinez in the team?
Are we dropping our £80m captain to the bench? is it going to be champions league Varane? Or are we playing a back three?

I think we'll go back 3 for sure with advanced WBs. With our lack of RW it makes sense as well

Been noodling with this idea as well but we really need a RWB to get it to work and I'm not convinced Dalot is the guy there.

---------- Lindelof --- Varane --- Martinez --------
---- Dalot ------ Fred ----- FdJ ------- Shaw ---------
---------------- Bruno --------- Sancho ------------------
-------------------------- Ronaldo ----------------------------

I still don't think you can get away with playing Eriksen + FdJ through the middle. Jorginho / Kova or Jorginho / Kante is the right model for us to look at. Bruno in the Mason Mount role where he'll excel.

Anyway, our interest in Antony makes it a moot point. We'll play 4-2-3-1 - players know the formation, know their roles etc. If we were going 5-3-2 I think we'd be signing a RWB over a RW player.

Daily Record saying:
Manchester United have been asked to pay combined transfer fees of £106m to sign Argentina defender Lisandro Martinez, 24, and Brazil winger Antony, 22, from Ajax.

Sounds like a good deal to me. But then again it's not my money.

How many possession teams play back three though? These type of teams, you usually want more players comfortable on the ball and that doesn't happen by adding more centre backs. Also, the outside centre backs usually have some speed because they are really pseudo-full backs. Martinez isn't fast so don't think he's best suited to the back three.

Don't get me, in ETH we trust either way, just trying to understand the plan.

Didn’t play in the final. Or the final of the Finallisima.

In fact Argentina’s starting pair are Otamendi & Romero. So a 34 year old City reject & an on loan Spurs player are deemed better then this guy. Hardly a ringing endorsement of a player we’re about to drop €50 million on.
Great point. I'm not hot on this transfer at all. Not for €50 million. Right now people want the club to have blind faith with ETH's signings, yet complain about us buying utter dross as requested by LVG and Solskjaer. The same lot who probably bought into the Rangnick sales pitch.

Sounds like a Blind / Rojo type of signing to be honest. We are paying a huge premium for a player who will very likely be on rotation / back-up duties.

Ajax are probably trying to hide the true cost of Antony in the Martinez fee to minimise the amount they have to pay to Sao Paolo on the 20% sell-on clause in Antony's contract.

Fair if in euros, with a slight premium paid for weakening Ajax. That's probably what we will end up negotiating to if interested.

Not happy with the reported fee.

He's short, not brilliant on the ball (good passer with time and space, but breaks down when under pressure). He's quickish but not lighting fast.
Sound like a player you get for 30million tops.

We don't use this word for our CBs :nono:
