We aren't good enough to carry him just because his passing is good. LCB and LWB needs reinforcement and quickly.
 
He's been poor for a long time now. In fact, his only really strong spell of form was pre-injury in his first season. Since then, he's been decent at times but also downright atrocious far too often.
 
Wonder if the injuries have taken a toll or whether thats a form problem, don't think he was good today at all.
 
Defence in my opinion is the area of the pitch where the unit matters more than the individual.

Martinez looked really good at the weekend alongside other defenders, was terrible tonight as part of a different trio.

I get the feeling there will always be an erratic element to his game, but I’m hopeful he could still be an important part of the system in a settled back three.

The sooner we define that first choice back line the better. Whoever is in it will surely benefit from a consistent unit.

If only he could get back to that level of consistency from his first season. We can't afford to have a defender whose level fluctuates this much game after game.
 
One of those players whose bottom level is terrible so when he’s shite he’s really, really bad. We desperately need him back to his best because when he’s on it he’s a real asset to the team.
 
IMO, That wasn't a mistake. It was a stop not a clearance, which is the best a defender can do given how close and fast the ball was. If the ball fell to a United player instead of Spur's, we'd all be lauding Martinez for a great "stop".
 
I like his mentality. He never gives in. But he doesn’t have the physicality to play in this system/role. He’s fine on the ball but let’s be honest he’s been a complete calamity at the back this season. Along with the two wing back roles, requires significant upgrading.
 
Similar to Casemiro, he was made to look special in his first season by a very compact system where all his defensive work was in very tight, congested areas.

Ever since in more expansive shapes, his size and lack of pace leaves him massively exposed, again just like Casemiro.

I don’t think either of them have simply dropped of a cliff form wise or become bad players. They would have looked like this in their first season in these set ups.

His left foot is as good as you can ask for from a defender. That is certanly no issue.
The problem is his lack of size, strength, pace, anticipation, positional awareness, concentration.
Lets hope he can improve some of the latter parts going forward.

Agree. He has no recovery pace. Cant play a high line with him.
 
He's a very good support defender how I like to call it. If he doesn't have the right partner next to him, it can make him look really bad. If he does, then he'll look quality quite often.

De Ligt is a good partner for him. Lindelof and Evans are not.
 
I think we're sorted for RCB for years to come with Yoro, and I think we're sorted at CCB for at least a few years with MDL and Maguire.. he's unfortunately starting to look like the odd one out at LCB, his passing can be great for sure, but we need someone stronger, bigger and with more athleticism i'm afraid. I forsee us signing a starter calibre LCB in the summer, someone in the mold of Branthwaite
 
Was a big fan of his , but he is just getting exposed too many games now. Too many mistakes and no recovery pace. Would not be surprised if he is one of those that gets moved on next summer.
 
Not an elite CB in my opinion.

He looks like a DM who's not quite mobile enough or good enough on the ball to play that position at an elite level, so he's dropped into CB.

The problem is, he doesn't look a natural defender to me. His game relies on raw aggression and when his timing or positioning is slightly off, his complete lack of size, strength and pace are badly exposed.

I know he's a fans favourite, and I'm not saying he's "bad", but I am saying we will never compete for major trophies with him as a regular first team starter.

Look at Yoro on the other side. 18 and looks every inch a natural defender. You can see that's what elite, natural defensive talent looks like. Let's hope he can build on it...but for Martinez...I'd sell if someone was willing to pay what we spent

It wasn't an uncontrollable rebound from close range. He had enough time and a player of his calibre simply can not allow the ball to be played in the direction of the opposition's forward. He was also at fault for the third goal, he messed up the offside trap and haven't managed to stop the striker anyway.
 
His passing and mentality are great. Unfortunately, his physical shortfalls are being exposed regularly. He can't get close enough to attackers. Nor can he keep up with them in a foot race.

Branthwaite - Maguire - Yoro would be crazy good defensively. The build-up is where questions would arise, but I actually think all 3 of them are underrated in that aspect, despite neither of them being Martínez level, obviously.
 
Was looking so cute though chasing the ball with Solanke trying to run fast with his tiny legs. Must have completed 10k steps/day challenge in that sprint.
 
Herrera and Martinez fall under the same blanket of likable players who are overrated due to their passion and not ability
 
Nowhere near good enough. He is really struggling to defend when there is space behind him. He gets beaten 1v1 too often. Kulusevski didn't even have to do anything special to go around him. I thought the 3 atb system would help him, but he doesn't look any better defensively.

He also was burnt by pace his first season. He's not terrible, far from it but his defending is inconsistent.

Good with the ball but I don't particularly think he will be at the club for much longer

Right, but that's two years ago at this point. Since the end of that first season he's been injured half the time and generally not very good when he's played. Rashford got 30 goals in that same season where Martinez was (mostly) good, yet he's seemingly on the way out of the club now. Time doesn't stand still.
 
As good as he was against City, he was that bad tonight.

If Shaw is ever fit, wait never mind.

I do think ideally a better player replaces Licha in our starting XI, but someone with his technique + athleticism.

He's just not been good enough lately.

My same argument for Bruno to be replaced, stats and good attributes don't make a complete player, there are others out there that can do it without the obvious massive flaws in their game.
