Isn't it the wrong term 'oil clubs', doesn't it carry racial Undertones after some journalists have been warned in some quarters?
Agreed. The correct term is sport-washing, human rights abusing, draconian regime and financial doping clubs.
I include Roman Abramovich and Chelsea when I think of 'oil clubs'. For me, the term is a football club funded by owners who made money for the oil industry. Perhaps the media only play up to the part of Arabs in the field, but surely it's just as relevant to USA, Russian or another country's oil barons?

What is the 'racial' aspect of this term?

I was joking

Lets Spare a thought for how Newcastle fans must be feeling like seeing messi ask to leave barca and linked to oil rich clubs in the same summer they thought they were going to get their own sugar daddy that dwarfed the spending power of psg and man city's owners...

Messi asks for a meeting, looking for a friendly exit.
He understands that he won't be able to leave for free but neither paying the 700m€ clause.
Barça reply, if It's to renew, if not there is nothing to negotiate

Please stay Messi! Don't ruin your legacy by going to an oil club. Although Barca are already sponsored by Qatar companies anyway.

There is no other way Barca are paying him 80M a year package including image rights, bonuses etc with out Qatar backing.

Qatar will be happy seeing their name on Messi shirt around the globe as it only increase their profile..

If he knows he can't leave for free then he surely knows he's not leaving this summer.

If he wants a free transfer I think he will have to wait till next summer to do it and then nobody can stop him.

Nobody can pay his transfer + his salary and be safe. I mean, I would struggle to see who could do that.

Bored of this one, so instead of being a negative Nancy in the thread I’ll step out and not repeatedly post ‘not happening lads’!

It’s either City or a renewal, I hope it’s the latter.

This is confusing me.
So Barcalona keep Messi against his will for another season. Pay him his reported salary of 40m/50m and lose him for nothing.

Or sell him now for 50-60m.

Surely the latter would be best for both parties.

If he keeps up his output, the former might still be worth it.

Would make it harder to transition from him though - and they're going to go through a period worse than us after Ferguson when he leaves

If they sell him then the fans will go absolutely mental. They won't want that. And they have already been protesting outside the stadium this week as it is.

If he chooses to leave for free in a year they will still be angry but I don't think they can be as angry. Messi after all will have turned down the renewal and chosen to go. And he will be 34 then.

The initial reports of Messi having a strong case to leave on a free being wrong changed this for me. I don’t think Bartemou will want to sell to City and PSG will offer huge amounts to get him. Messi will be left with the choice of PSG now or City next year at 34 when Pep may have left. I think he’ll go to PSG.

Some spanish newspapers claim that Messi's lawyers now have doubts about the "leaving when I want to - for free" clause, which expired in June . Pathetic if true. Yet another episode of "throwing the toys out the pram", like in 2010 (Ibra + more money affairs), 2014 (Martino + booing my pal Fabregas affairs) and 2016 (three finals lost in a row with Argentina).

I hope Barca keep him against his will. He has a contract so fecking see it out. Don't let him go to that oil club.

Of course I'm biased.
Barca don’t want him to say. Him leaving basically solves their financial problems. By Barca, I mean the current president and most of the board, not all socios and fans, of course.

I wouldn’t ever believe a word from Bartomeu’s mouth. The guy is a fecking weasel.

I don’t think many here realize the scale of politics in Barca. It’s not comparable to English football clubs, it’s an entirely different type of organization.

He can leave next summer on a free though, due to the contract clause.

If he stays this year, I hope United go big on reinforcements and try for him next year, but of course City might draw him in.

I really think United with 3 notable additions will be a big attraction for all players soon, Pep will leave eventually and City will have to rebuild at some point as will Liverpool.

Happy United has a young team.

It`s like you lack reading comprehension or something, despite me explicitly naming United as badly run you still bring them up as a strawmen. But it`s great that you`ve now moved away from the innovation and progressive gibberish but try to make a point that their net spent is not too bad because United is almost up there as well and Barca is on 60% of that.
Want to look a bit deeper into these transfer spending comparisons? According to transfermarkt they have more than double outspent every other club in Europe bar United, PSG and Barca in the last 10 years. And if you look only on the PL as comparisons they have more than triple outspent every other team. I wonder how that is necessary if they have such a smart vision and long-term planning? And all of that while investing a shitload in other structures such as youth academy, scouting etc.

"Reducing their success to their financial prowess is not fair" - yes, it`s totally down to smart next level thinking, having to outspent basically everyone else by 3 times that amount is just uhm a random byproduct of innovation and progressive club management.
Top post!

He wants to be a little careful he doesn't mess up his legacy there with this pissing about.

To be fair to him, he had an agreement to leave end of season and only covid19 made him stay longer than the contractual date. I think its more the club looking like cnuts than him here

He has a contract. The initial news that he had a legal case seems to be false. He’s getting paid £1m a week and he’s supposedly about to go on strike. Seems a touch absurd to me.

He should have made his intentions clear before the original date. His case is very, very poor.

Which had an exit clause at the end of the season. I'm not saying he has a legal case, without covid19 he leaves this summer no issues

He’s got a lot to lose. His reputation with Barcelona for a start but also his legacy within the game. Could you imagine if he bombs and does a ‘Sanchez’? he’s one of the greatest ever but changing clubs now at the back end of his career could be a huge mistake.

Hes gonna have to bang in 60 goals in the next 2 seasons just to keep his current standing, I can’t see it happening.

Aguero was involved in one goal (16G+3A) every 77 mins this season and Messi is a superior player. Yeah, I'd expect him to do quite well for City.

If he joins City you may as well close the voting for PFA player of the year now. He will walk it.

He might not have that long left at the top but he's still got at least 2 years where he will just show up whoever he chooses to.

If it’s just a political game, it paints him in a poor light and is tiresome.

I would love to see him in another league, but if it’s just flirtation to get what he wants at Barca, it’s just irritating.

He is amazing, but he gets paid a fortune and has a contract like any other player.

Ok. Time will show. Agree that it’s only speculation anyway. But Barca seems very confident with their position.
You’ve completed missed the point. Since I already said I wasnt speaking about the legal position.
