Lionel Messi

Given how cheatcode City already is, if anything I feel like this will just serve to remind the general populace who had become somewhat inured against the scale of their spend just how ridiculous it is.

On the pitch, he'll be good obviously, but I agree with the poster above who was pointing out that attacking midfield really isn't an issue for City. He's clearly going to get better numbers than Mahrez but so what? I don't think it changes City that much at all, outside of the CL where his big game experience would tell.

Also feeling very conflicted because it really would be exciting to see Messi in the premier league. Even if it's at City.

Oh, I think he'd elevate them immediately. Psychologically the team will get a huge boost, they'll have another match-winner alongside de Bruyne. From a marketing point of view, they'd go up quite a few levels. They'd probably start getting people in their stadium when that's allowed again..

I wonder if Messi was a director and it was his own personal capital on the line, whether he would be willing to hold elections early?

In any event, the whole issue at Barcelona centers around Messi's greed and has done for a number of years. He is as much to blame as the board is.

That’s the least imposing mob I’ve ever seen, I wouldn’t even get out of my chair for that if I were Bertomeu.

Looks like the home time bell has gone off at the local high school.
Most of them are there for videos to post on social media :D
The use of phones is insane. Say you are go to a protest and then you are holding your phone in front of your face all the time. No one is going to take you seriously.

Their club status will now be elevated for sure if he moves and plays for them.

they’ll be treated like Chelsea have been treated recently in a couple of years.

Both clubs arent much though in terms of their historical status in world football, messi going to man city would be like ronaldo going to malaga when they had money. Messi even joining ac Milan this season would be more fitting than him going to man city, man city is a shallow club that will never be able to buy what the likes of Bayern, milan, liverpool, united, juventus, madrid, barca and many more have in terms of prestige.

We might be able to sell Smalling and sign Brooks if Bournemouth will take installments so who are the real winners this window? Utterly depressing
Definitely Bournemouth if we pay close or anywhere near £35-40m on Brooks.

Wonder if we could sell Lingard or Pereira and try and negotiate with Villa for the rest of the transfer window for Grealish.

Let’s be honest. If city can fund this deal at a similar rate to his Barca contract without offloading some players then we know financial fair play rules are being broken.
What's the use of "we" knowing anything? We can inform UEFA so that they can make sure they get their cut from the Sheikhs

If it happens, it’ll remind me of the jealousy I felt when City signed Robinho just after their Arab owners took over. Hope it turns out as well.

Really envious of those Barca fans. They were willing to what United fans wouldn't bother doing. They would just march right in to demand the resignation while ours would be like "what is it going to achieve? No one would do it. It is pointless."

Remember when Rooney requested to leave (allegedly for similar reasons as he felt we weren't able to 'compete') and ended up signing a new deal with us? Many fans never forgave him for it and it kinda tarnished his legacy with us a little...

I know Rooney to Utd is not Messi to Barcelona, but it's hard to imagine Messi staying now. If he signs a new deal would he be thought of as holding the club ransom? I think if he leaves his legacy is more in tact and the blame is placed more towards the leadership / management. He would have most fans on his side.

Really interesting

Just like us, keeping Messi is more important than this feeling of legacy. Only way Messi stays now is if the board cave in and resign or make really good signings.

Whilst It is inevitable, Messi moving to city will taint his legacy against ronaldo. Ronaldo has played and done it for historically big clubs in united, madrid and juve.

Man city's club status is not in that same bracket as such clubs and will be looked back upon as if he had taken quite a step down from going from a club of Barca's status to such a small club in man city.
He won the league with juventus who win it every year anyway. Coming to the premier league trying to catch this liverpool is more of a challenge

Personally I would be all for selling both of them when they return from their holidays, massive fan of Jack and really hope we could still make this happen.

The worrying thing though is that all reputable sources seem certain our interest in him completely cooled when Pogba decided to stay.

I'd love him at United along with Sancho, unfortunately I think we'll end up with neither.

Still got very feint hopes we at least can get one of them but will admit it looks very unlikely at the moment

For the club I agree, absolutely. For Messi? I'm not sure

If the decision to part ways with Suarez was the last straw, there's no reversing of that decision, no? And given the comments by Koeman that Griezeman will play in his 'natural position' moving forward, I don't see Suarez staying.

They board would have resign and Koeman would also need to leave at this point. Messi would be pretty much calling all the shots. Amazing if it comes to that.

The thought of Lionel fcuking Messi playing for Man City makes me sick.

This is simply not true.

Messi’s stature is so astronomical that it won’t be mitigated from playing for one of the non historical clubs.

Quite the contrary actually. Messi going to Man City elevates their global standing. This goes for any European club he joins while still the BPITW. Although, it’s not like he’s going to MK Dons.

Top 10 reasons why I hope City can get him.

10) Would get to see one of the greatest players of my generation play every week in the PL, albeit his feigning years. I don't watch Spanish football except for the occasional el Classico.
9) Could put pressure on the board to obtain Ole's targets as it would mean increasing the gap further between City and United if they don't.
8) Would narrow the gap between City and Liverpool. More wishful thinking but there is a chance.
7) Would possibly destabilize the City squad due to his wages. Then again, City got around that by secretly paying their players from outside sources so this probably won't happen.
6) FFP - see #7.
5) Messi vs the best RB in the league. Am I right?
4) Ed Woodward will stop chasing him and move on to more obtainable targets.
3) Messi would tear Spurs apart resulting in Jose sticking his finger in Juan Manuel Lillo's eye.
2) We may finally get an answer to the age old question of whether Messi can do it on a cold wet night at Stoke. Okay, maybe not unless Stoke are promoted next season or City get them in one of the cups.
1) Would be Ole's first real test vs City.

3 reasons why I hope not:

3) City would get even stronger
2) City would have a GOAT in their team
1) Barca may now go for Sancho as replacement

How did our spend for LVG compared with City at the time?

actually forget that/. We just saw LVGs list and he was given Scniederlin and a half crocked Falcao.
And Di Maria, Schweinsteiger, Depay, Martial, Herrera, Blind, Rojo, Shaw, Darmian, Valdez and Romero.

Number one is a terrifying prospect

Barca are broke as shit. They'll need another miraculous loan and need to shift off players and their wages.

City getting their backline sorted out and having a better CF to support Aguero is what they need. And some real leaders on their team now that Kompany has been gone and Silva left. They score plenty of goals, but they don't scrap or fight enough when they have to do it. They had a superior goal difference (67) and scored over 100 league goals, but still finished 18 or however many points off Liverpool.

As I’ve said if he goes to City the only way to cope will be to become full on Ronaldo fanboys. The Caf’s official GOAT moving forward.

Maybe we can shift the narrative that Messi has only done it for one team to Ronaldo has done it at elite clubs not oil clubs or something?

I can’t imagine Messi and his family being happy in Manchester for 2-3 years. Wherever he goes will he demand that the club signs Suarez or someone else as well so he has his mates around him? Or maybe he would be fine as Aguero & Co are already in Manchester / at City.
A lot of question marks but regardless of what all the journalists say, I still believe he will stay at Barca.

He may be one the other greatest ever players to play the game but,he’s not a child. He can’t demand one of his mates comes with him. How pathetic would that sound? I’m only coming if you sign Suarez.

They don’t have the money and by all reports, he wants to come home.

Wouldn't worry because you showed last season at Anfield how to shut him down in a big game
He’d still annihilate the rest of the league. Which is the problem we’re not going to keep racking up 95 plus point totals.

It’s such a risky investment. What if he gets a serious injury after a few games? would be such a shame for city if that happened :annoyed:

How did his insurance work at Barcelona? Did he ever have any long and major injuries?

1 million per week.
Think of the amount of Nik Naks you could buy with that money.

A quick Google search shows his base salary is €546k with some add-ons but he’s not making anywhere near €1m/wk from Barca. Adidas and Pepsi are paying him handsomely I’m sure which they will continue to do wherever he plays.
