Lionel Messi

I think we should brief the press that we are considering offering 3-4 unwanted players in return for Messi. That's what Barca do. Or they tell the other club what the price for their player should be.

Imagine the headline "United prepared to exchange Rojo, Jones, Mata and Pereira for Lionel Messi".
Could even throw in a lingard to spice up the deal

He wants to leave because:
He doesn't trust the board
he does not see them competent to reverse the situation.
Unable to assemble a competitive team.
He didn't like how they treated some team mates, among them Suárez.

Guess those first few reasons effectively rule us out from the offset

Does Messi have a name and reputation in the states? Think it will be easier to sanction this move if Glazers know who he is.

I mean, Bayern just won the CL but Barca are hogging all the media attention... Messi isn't leaving Barca, get over it. Barca are playing the media like a hawk from hell, and all the fools are lapping it up.

Would be willing to wager at least half the planet have heard of him

So they are Messi FC then. Don't know how Koeman is expected to change things radically if the Messi sword is always hanging over his head. Either Messi should take a more advisory role in the team and pull back from being the leader to let the new generation shine or should leave the club. Looks like he is doing the later but you can never be sure if it is a negotiation tactic to get the manager to toe his line and increase his pay as a result.

No one thought Ronny would leave Madrid, but that happened pretty quickly.

They're playing the media by making themselves look terrible and like a laughingstock along with putting their board members at risk??

What kind of 5D chess play would they be making orchestrating a fake, seemingly contemptuous departure of their greatest son for show?

The BBC, AP and worldwide press must be bare muppets for lapping it up then

He is not leaving Barcelona. They will do everything they can to make sure of it. And no other club will pay him half a million pounds a week. None!

Yeah, it probably goes something like Ronaldo, Rapinoe, Mia Hamm, and Messi as the tops in terms of fame.

After Beckham of course.

The Gulf Oil clubs definitely could and would

Seems there's a lot left to play out but this is hardly making Barcelona look good in the slightest.

I'm kind of glad its taken a lot of the heat/negative attention away from us and Harry today tbf

Sports law in Lausanne (CAS) is based on German/Swiss law and according to that contracts that were previously dated to the usual end of the season automatically extend until the newly ammended end of the season due to Covid19. If that's the case Messi can still exercise his exit clause which terminates his contract and a move becomes much easier.

Plus Messi has made his fortune. He does not need the maximum salary possible for the last 2-3 seasons. I bet he would gladly earn 10m € less per year if it gives him the opportunity to end his career gracefully.

Good point...

And good point...

Joel Glazer has a genuine interest in football, has a picture of George Best in his office. He’s really into running United day-to-day whilst other Glazers could give two shits.

Can't see it happening but not arguing with your assessment.

All the idiots on here talking like there’s the slightest chance Messi would join us. Barca are shit, we’re even worse, it’s not happening lads, end of.

I reckon he might end up going, but he’ll end up at PSG/Juve/City. The only actual options for him.

Ahh depressing, looks like City will be front runners then.

Their wage bill couldn't cope. They'd have every top player knocking on the door asking for more money too.

After the scrutiny of FFP saga they aren't going to then sign somebody for 1m a week.

Messi will retire at Barca or at worst retire outside of Europe. Can you imagine him in a City shirt and them playing away at the Camp Nou? I can't.

Is Juve really an option? Can they afford both Messi and Ronaldo? And would the two of them be even keen to play with each and work well given both are essentially goalscoring machines and need other players to work around them?

This makes it sound a bit similar to Rooney's situation with us back in 2009/2010.. probably will turn out to have the same result too.

No, they are not going to dramatically increase his wages and give him a 5 year contract.

His reasons are probably varied, not least sporting ambitions. Barca cannot rebuild fast enough given his age.

edit: oh, that was Rooney in '13..

I think Bartomeu will be forced out and Messi will stay. Highly frustrating how the English media ignore the elephant in the room with City though. How do the numbers add up? They don’t and they couldn’t give two shits about it. Now let’s all look the other way and proclaim Pep and their directors geniuses. Money or Pep indeed.

Also Rooney was lucky that SAF retired or he's have been shown the door earlier IMO.

That’s an interesting take.

I'm almost sure that it's Avram that is interested in Football and runs the club day to day. Joel Glazer is the one interested in sport in general and is more focused on the Buccaneers.

Messi is not a slave, and he will retire where he wants to, not where Barcelona wants him to. After what he has done for them for the last 15 years, Barcelona could actually act differently and let him leave without scandal

Everybody talking in the radio now.Minguella(important for Messi's arrival being a kid and former agent) think that will go to Inter

And Pedrerol in el chiringuito "if Bartomeu resigns tomorrow Messi could stay

Not comparable. Rooney was not bigger than the club. Barca on the other hand is just Messi FC
