Lionel Messi

We might have reached the point in his career where Messi is still individually the best player in the world, but at the very top you can't have him on your team and be the best team in the world

Why would bayern, or city for that matter, or liverpool, etc, want him when the high press is their biggest strength? And they're the best sides in the world largely because of it?

PS this is also true of Cristiano btw. Will be interesting to see the progress of Neymar and Mbappé

Don't tell SportingCPLyonHasABetterSquadThanJuventus

Klopp would not ask Messi or Ronaldo to defend he says:

and who scored the goals in those games to get them to penalties :wenger:Mate you are falling apart here:lol: You are on full defense mode and l get it honestly.

One has a 3 peat and is the greatest CL player of all time AND won a major trophy for his country and the other retired for Argentina.

And yet everyone takes Messi over Ronaldo, funny how that works. You were so desperate getting annihilated on these forums for saying the pathetic Lyon has a better squad than Juventus. But I get it, Ronaldo can't even hack it against mid table french team and knocked out by the Napoli's of the world (who Messi dismantled) and now Ronaldo keeps jumping to easier leagues as he nears to his time to MLS

I am talking about that big game bug moment mentality. When your back is against the wall type of mentality.

Do you think he would of scored the 3 goals and led his team back like Ronaldo did last year and almost again this year and has done many times before?

What about a free kick in the 90th minute down 3-2?

Did you see how he was at halftime yesterday? or when he quit on his country after he missed the crucial penalty?

That is what I am talking about. That killer will/instinct. There is a reason Ronaldo has double the goals of any other player ever in the CL knockout rounds. The cream de la creme of top level football and he shines brightest in those circumstances.

Obviously to achieve what he has he had to have good professional mentality. Things that guy like Quaresma or even Ravel Morrison lacked which stopped them from achieving what there potential could have.

Messi scored in two champions league finals. Those are pretty big games. He also scored against Real Madrid in the semi finals. As well numerous other Clasico goals.

How can he not have a big game moment mentality?

I really couldnt care less about Madrid or Ronaldo, but watching butt hurt Barcelona fans try and paint anything other than their club being a complete shambles is humurous. Even then, i've never seen a team with Ronaldo in it get done 8-2.
Can’t imagine Ronaldo on the end of 8-2 beating. Nobody would come out alive from the dressing room. Messi is GOAT lvl talent, but he has 0 leadership skill and in my eyes that make him inferior to Ronaldo.

How about when Messi annihilated bayern in 2015, you never mention that, or the 3-2 vs Madrid that had ronaldo sulking because messi outshined him again. ronaldo hasn't shined in CL in a few years, you don't have your worst CL patch without Modric when you keep getting bounced so early to inferior teams. Juventus were havy favorites over Ajax/Lyon and got bounced. Yesterday Barca were the biggest underdogs of the Messi era heading into the match.

Jesus mate your acting a fool here.

Ronaldo was on the end of 4-0, 6-2, 5-0 beatings all at the hands of Messi and Barca. His biggest rival. Ronaldo and messi can't fix the defense.

In 5 years, Ronaldo will be playing in Cova de la Pieda and Messi in the 2nd Division of Cyprus and people will still compare them.

He's 35 and despeerate so he's bouncing around from league to league and his wages are going to be hard for any team to compensate for. Juventus have now done worse with Ronaldo than they had prior to him joining. All the hype for him and he can't get past the QF. Messi is the most rcent ballon d'or winner and was the best player in UCL last season.

Never lost 6-2 to Messi:lol: Now you are making up games and everything.

Your having a full meltdown on here this is wild:lol::lol:

Yes he was. He scored 5 and assisted 5 of the 14 goals Argentina scored, and this Barcelona team is as good as anything he had for Argentina or Napoli. We make excuses for Messi in the Argentina squad, please let's not do the same for Barcelona. They have a billion dollar squad for christ's sake... is anything other than Xavi/Iniesta going to be spun as a bunch of pub players when discussing him in years to come?

Not with this year's Barca no way, maradonna would get trashed.

And the 86 team was far more than a one man show:

https://lastwordonsports.com/2016/0...-cup-squad-was-much-more-than-diego-maradona/

The whole annoying thing with this debate is that it becomes Messi vs Bayern/Germany/whatever have your pick, instead of Barcelona vs Bayern and Juventus vs Ajax/Lyon whatever.

In the sunday the league, you might have someone who scores 5 solo goals every match, at the highest level a team is only as great as the sum of it parts and sometimes you have amazing individual performances but most trophies and games are won by the greatest collective performances.

nothing beats saying lyon is a better squad than juventus. and yet here you are in the messi thread. :)

You've been having a meltdown all season

Messi is finished in games away from the nou camp where Barcelona need all 10 outfield to press and run for the full 90 minutes off the ball to have a chance to get a result.

Should be benched and brought on for 30 minutes if need a goal.

He's still near best in the world on the ball of course.

Is like having a player less though when Barcelona don't have the ball, or two less given Suarez has exactly the same problem. Can't run all game anymore.

Can't be surprised when losing 3 - 0, 4 - 0 and now 8 2 3 years in a row in big away games in CL.

This is not the first time barca have been mauled and everytime Messi has been the captain and everytime he has dropped his head early on and not given his team any semblance of belief, drive ot determination. He has to take blame for that.

Ronaldo has been mauled plenty of times, not 8-2 bad, but some pretty bad results at the hands of Barca year in and year out.

They play better yes.

I am here for the first time all season cause I figured "Y'all are always In the Ronaldo thread so let me fo the same for a day"

23 goals from losing positions compared to 5. GG.

Its actually hilarious. Yes barca have squad issues but look at the quality they have on the pitch that's top 5 in Europe quality. The reason they lost 8-2 is nothing to do with quality it's mentality and I'm sure but Messi is the captain when your captain is strolling around not interested at all at 3-1 down how do you think the rest of the team is going to react?

They have an aging core, you are way off. This is the worst barca side of the last 10 years and it's not just mentality, they phsyically can't do it anymore. Messi had them over achieving in recent years as he papered over the cracks.

And yet they were favorites where they shouldn't have been in a losing position to begin with. Heavy favorites vs Lyon and knocked out by midtable french teams. Can't even get his team far enough to play Europe's elite because mid table teams are his biggest obstacle. Him at MLS within 2 years will be exciting though. It'll raise the league awareness and he won't have to worry about 7th place teams knocking his teams out.

I am talking about that big game bug moment mentality. When your back is against the wall type of mentality.

Always thought people only talk about mentality when they don't understand the things they're seeing on the pitch. It's like a joker. Don't really know what happened? Just blame mentality and everybody in the pub agrees with you.

Ok but being honest did you see the game yesterday? Offered nothing going forward besides a few passes here and there and literally was a cone on the pitch as Bayern ran by him with his head down. Also lost the ball that led to a goal. It was a horrid performance from him and Barca as a whole who were terrible.

It is 100% a big part of players and anyone who has played and or if you speak to athletes from all sports will tell you the same.

Yes but if you watched the game the holy goal Barca scored themselves never happens without Messi. His pass was pretty good. He was bad yesterday, can’t deny that, but when you concede 8, the attack isn’t the issue. 2 goals should be enough to at least get to ET. The sad thing is he was still a top 2 Player for Barca yesterday but that more shows how bad the team were as a whole.

Can you guys take the Ronaldo v Messi stuff back to that thread?

Let the rest of us enjoy the demise of Messi. :smirk:

Messi has always been better and I think the general opinion aligns with that. Heck even redcafe and it's pro Ronaldo outlook voted for Messi between the two. Yet a handful of posters keep at it as if it's some stranfe religion of theirs to try and live in this weird echo chamber world of Ronaldo being the greatest ever/Jordan of football, which nobody outside of their little gang feels. Now they don't seem to be able to keep it to that /their threads either.

Funny how that works when the other guy scored 2 goals himself and somehow it's all his fault Juve lost to Lyon.

At 35 he has 48 goals. I wonder what Messi will be doing at 35? Maybe Newell old boys.

within 2 years? Hey see now you get it so at 38 he will be going to MLS? Sounds about right. At let you agree he will be at the top of the game until then. At least we agree on that. By 38 Messi will be retired most likely.

Oh it's not, same way it isn't all Messi's fault Barca lost to Bayern. And it's good to have you back Cal?, feels like it's been ages my friend :)

That "vote" lost all credibility when some idiot mod locked the voting once Barca capitulated in the last CL.

At 33 Messi is breaking all time assist records, doing things no player has done in the top 5 leagues in history. I think he'll be really good at 35 as well.

Yeah and they would laugh at you for saying a player that's widely regarded as the best in the world and even the best in history has mentality issues.

"Mentality is the big brother of the positional error" - that's what Mats Hummels said this season by the way.

I'm too upset with the demise of Hong Kong to argue Ronaldo v Messi currently. :(

One of them was a penalty and he didn't do much in the key match (1-0 loss) that actually lost them the tie. But it's brainless to pinpoint it on Ronaldo too.

Nah, it's a united forum, ronaldo should be dominating it but he didn't and the vote unlocked. And getting knocked out with the earliest cl exits he's had in ages isn't a time the pendulum is going to swing.

He looks about ready to quit tbh. Granted he has done it before so its not new too him.

But hey Ronnie broke an 100 year old record too! and is not long away from breaking 2 more historical records so I'm glad both of them are still doing it! granted some better then others.
