True that. Just take a trip to the earlier parts of this thread and see what people said of Ronaldo's penalty miss at the Nou Camp.

Thanks good sir, also scored probably the biggest goal from teh spot v Arsenal last year twice, that brought United back into a game that they needed but were being out played in, both attempts, ...fecking perfect

Based on what do you measure this reputation ?

He hasnt even overtaken the achievement of Ronaldinho yet. There is quite a way to go even for that before you can start talking about fat Ronaldo or Zidane.

I said reputation, not achievements. What reputation has to do with achievements? Cristiano has won more individual awards than Ronaldinho at the same age but still he's nowhere compared to the best of the brazilian at Barca.

Even Ronaldinho never had a reputation of being the successor to Ronaldo or Zidane until 2004 although he achieved more playing his part in the the WC and Copa America wins but he wasn't even rated as high as other Argie kids ala Aimar or Saviola.

It was for Messi's ability to dominate teams ever since he broke through has warranted comparisions with Pele or Maradona, they dont do it for every other talented footballer who can turn up with juicy stats and individual awards. None of the players in the post Maradona era barring the four have been mentioned in the same breath , whether they were all really up to that level is not the argument there.

Veron had a reputation........... best midfielder at United right?

Every year there is a new 16yr old kid from South America who gets compared with Pele or Maradona.

Yeah where is Macheda on reputation right now, right up with the best of them, surely gonna be one the best players of all time :nervous:

Also, its reputation only if the achievements match.

If the player hasn't achieved even as much as Ronaldinho, but is said to be better than them and as good as Pele and Maradona, its called 'hype'.

Well said

Only by either Brazilians or Argies and their deluded media. But the remaining global population outside Ronaldo's fanboi clique all echo Messi is some player, including professional footballers and all top managers.

Your point being . Dont think any footballer in the history of the world has turned up every other week. Great footballers only play 60% or 70% of their potential and can still win games whilst in big matches they are always in their own league. Its their lower cut off levels and ability to dominate big matches when the stakes are high cuts them apart from the rest.

Messi at least in terms of reputation has already overtaken all footballers of the post Maradona era barring Romario, Ronaldo, Laudrup and Zidane. One more injury free season and a great world cup, it shouldn't take much for him to surpass these four.
:wenger::wenger::lol:
vijay would gladly suck on messis stub of a cock

Totti was better considering his class when he was it his best several years ago. Toni is better now. Its like Gerrard being better than Scholes now.

and WTF...Pizzaro = Van Bommel (two time Dutch footballer of the year, Bayern player of the year and their first non German captain) ? :wenger:

Totti when he played us was better than Toni when he played Barca.

Pizzaro when he played us was better than Van Bommel has been for Bayern, easily.

Clearly Sir Alex is deluded in thinking Ronaldo is the best player in the World. :wenger:

Vijay doesnt even understand the difference between reputation and hype. If the media compares a player with Pele or Maradona, he is obviously as good as them in spite of achieving feck all, unless the media is Brazilian or Argentine.

You're clueless if you continue to claim, Messi has achieved feck all. Its on par with your earlier claim, that Messi was shite against Milan when the player was in the physio room nursing his injury.

For young SA players comparisions with Pele or Maradona would arise only to fade away over a period of time. Messi's comparison with Maradona started after he won the WYC, demolished Juventus and Bayern in 2005 and followed it up with some great performances even though Rijkaard was using him sparingly. From then he has only improved and never looked back.

These two games did not take place. Barcelona did not play Juventus or Bayern in 2005. They lat played Juventus in 2003 and before Wednesday the last time they played Bayern was 1999.

I am tired of repeating it.

Barcelona played Juventus in the gamper trophy before the 2005 season when Messi tore them apart, and set up the winning goal for Eto, same with Bayern when Barca gave them a 4-0 tonking. Messi was the MOTM even with Ronaldinho around and both Capello and Hitzfeld said something about the player then......google and youtube can can help a lot here.

With this comment you're basically just proving the original point that comparisons with Maradonna and Pele are too early. They were pre-season games ffs.

I never though anyone would talk about pre-season games as a measure of anything.

Preseason game or not the match Barcelona against Juventus was intense, Juventus under Capello already had an strong defence, they put four men on Messi yet he stil ran them ragged and set up the winning goal for Eto.

Comparison with Pele and Maradona was not made by blinkered fans or the media but by Capello then and later Hitzfeld echoed the same opinion when he undid Bayern. Even now its premature to draw superlative comparisons with Pele or Maradona but still he can live a big legacy like them if he remains injury free.

You are really clueless.

What else is Fergie going to say? i shouldn't be surprised you churn out the same rubbish despite what is obvious to all. clueless, really clueless.

Perhaps nothing? As I've pointed out many times, Sir Alex never called any United player the best in the World before Ronaldo. This is not Mourinho who likes to call his players the best for no good reason.

Ronaldo is one of the best players in the world though. If SAF had one of the undoubted worlds best players in the past with everything that comes with being C. Ronaldo then he might have taken a different approach. Personally i've never seen SAF treat any player like he has done Ronaldo but in the past he didn't have an out and out contender for BPITW type praise to be fair.

anyway Messi was MOTM again at the weekend and here is why.

It was another impressive performance at the weekend. It's bizarre to see him just bouncing off players.

A pre-season tournament?

My head hurts.

It's a one nil victory but anyone can see his influence on the game, rarely giving it away, setting up countless opertunities, being denied (another) stone wall penalty and scoring a goal which he was flagged for being offside.

Even times where you see him come back and win the ball back for his team, working hard. Typical Messi.

Why does his hair not look wet when it is wet?

So you watched just the youtube clip and not the game then ?

He had a great game overall but he also gave away the ball numerous times trying to go past players.

yeah in the final third when trying to beat men/create openings. I didn't see him give it away in a position that could damage his team. Even when he does give it away he tracks back and puts in a challenge or commits a foul.
