Lionel Messi

I would imagine it was a freak result, if not it's shown a few people that Messi is not anywhere near where people assume him to be. I watched the game and it was basically every attack was a goal by Bolivia and the argies were lethargic and couldnt get out of first gear. Actually very simelar to the what happend to Brazil against Venezuela, difference being Bolivia scored with almost every chance whilst Venezuela missed or Julio Cesar saved every chance, they should have hammered Brazil but in the end only managed a draw. The argies don't have cesar and they didn't have the luck of Brazil and so were thumped. It's how they react to this that will show more than the result itself in my opinion.

Fixed:p

I must say, I don't remember this. I remember him giving what I'd say was a 7/8 out of 10 performance against Inter away, but I can't remember him playing particularly well in many other games. Infact, I'd go as far as to say that the Inter game and the first match in the CWC are the only two performances that I remember Ronaldo standing out in (my memory is dreadful, though!).

The Ronaldo of 06/07 consistently produced 9/10 performances; he's not come close to that, this year. I can't stress how highly I rate the Ronaldo of 2 years ago, so it'd take a very special performance to make me draw that comparison. It really did take the piss when Kaka scooped the awards that year.

Just saying it how it is. :)

Edit: That reminds me, I was watching this fantastic video of yours again the other day:

It just about highlights everything that's missing from Ronaldo's game this year, and it also highlights what he's lost since 2006/07. Now THAT'S a player that can come close to Messi. You should make a Messi one, it'd be great! :D

The magic is still there. Just wait ;).

Playing soccer in the high altitude of La Paz is "impossible" and Argentina must learn a lesson from their stunning 6-1 defeat to Bolivia there, striker Lionel Messi said.

La Paz, the world's highest venue for international games, lies at 3,600 metres above sea level and Argentina face another World Cup qualifier at altitude in June when they visit Ecuador. That match will be played at 2,800m above sea level in Quito.

"It's very painful, we knew that we would lose at some stage but we didn't think it would be like this," he told reporters at Buenos Aires airport before boarding a flight for Spain.

"It's impossible to play there.

"Everyone struggled. You sprint a bit and it's difficult to get your breath back and you could see that they were faster. They also played at a very fast rhythm, and they shot from everywhere."

"This has to be a lesson for the match in June," said Messi. "We have to look forward."

Messi's view is different to his coach Diego Maradona, who has refused to blame altitude for the defeat, his first since taking over as coach in October.

Maradona publicly supported Bolivia when FIFA banned La Paz from hosting international games last year, at one stage playing a charity match alongside President Evo Morales. The ban was later overturned.

I can't ever imagine Ronaldo trying to excuse a poor performance like that. Grow some balls Messi.

To be fair to him though he isn't totally wrong. Tim Vickery, the BBC's respect South American based journalist is as much. That and the mere fact Argentina had a shit and slow center back partnership of Heinze and Demchelis liked them.

I agree with you. What saved Brazil from a similar fate was the world Class ability of Caesar.

To be fair, Ronaldo's not exactly one of football's hardmen.

What constitutes being a hard-man? Dishing out punishment or being on the receiving end of it?

Ronaldo will get more kickings in his career than any hard-man you can care to mention and yet he'll never get much credit for taking all that punishment.

I think it's admirable to get up and go at it again and again knowing you're going to get lumps kicked out of you with next to no chance of revenge. Much harder to do that than being a textbook hard-man who gets plenty of chances to even the score during the course of a game.

I know what constitutes being a bender:

Embarassing...people with stab and gun shot wounds have looked to be in less pain than Ronaldo in the second video.

How about you show all the times he gets shit kicked out of him?

I don't care either way for the retarded biases on here, but some of the shite you lot come up with to suit your agendas is terrible.

A lot of footballers are like that. This is far more convincing about him being a bender -

Does he really get the shit kicked out of him, though? The way people go on, it's as if he gets assaulted every time he sets foot on a football pitch. I think it's only when he comes up against Middlesborough that it gets a bit out of order.

Sure, he gets hacked down occasionally, but he also gets a hundred grand a week to make up for it.

Yes,

No one is more fouled than him. And no flair player is as bypassed by refs for fouls as him.

Whether that's his own doing for feigning injury like a fairy at times or crying wolf once too often, is another issue.

The second one is fecking embarrassingly pathetic. What a piss poor effort, I don't understand the mentality of someone who'd be willing to do that in front of millions of viewers from across the world.

The mind boggles.

Forgetting that Ronaldo was playing with pain killing injections in his foot........

Over dramatized yes. Hurting? you'd fecking think so.

feck you love him something aweful.

He got the slightest of tickles there and he fell over. And BTW, pain killers STOP you from feeling pain you fool. He wouldn't have felt shit.

Hence him looking over before he went into that disgraceful rolling act.

There is not a chance in hell that hurt one single iota. He'd have hurt more from getting fecking grass rash from all the rolling.

Drink less. It hurts less in the morning cescy my boy.

You have to feel pain..... They numb the pain down, they can't stop it completely without giving a local which as a football he can't afford to do.

Yes he looks like a goose, but it would have hurt.

Yeah true he couldn't get a totally numb foot otherwise he'd be getting wobble leg throughout the match. Though that would be rather funny to see.

Still, a little tickle like that wouldn't have done anything. Let alone pain enough to warrant that pathetic display there.

I just can't comprehend why someone'd want to act like that, as bad as that was. That was Dida-esque. Surely you'd rather be respected as a Footballer?

It has slot to with ones ip bringing and the footballing cultre one has grown up in. Some change their thinking some don't. Surely Rooney should control his daft rush of blood every time he loss possession which can cost his team after all despite everyone know g and telling him it's spastic. But he can't he's grown up playing that way and finds it difficult to change.

I was just thinking this, and was youtube searching a clip I wanted to use just then - though it's not there.

I think I find this type of thing particularly weak because down here we play sports hard and fair. That's what everyone, and every team no matter what level of what sport across any grade prides themselves on. You don't shirk the issue, you man the feck up.

The clip was going to be one from last years AFL Grand Final, from back in September 26 last year - one player was running along and inconspicuously pulled up. He'd aggrovated his previous foot injury, and it turns out he rebroke (shattered) several of the tiny bones in the middle of his foot.

He's still out injured now (it's been 5 months), and he's got another few months before he's alright. Anyway he didn't fall to the ground and cry and he had a legitimate injury, he fecking turned around and started limping off the ground, but then the ball came his way and the opposition player got it and he hammered him with a nice bump then continued to make his way off the field with the aid of the trainers.

Now fecking rolling from pretend injuries.

That type of stuff has found its way into the World Game unfortunately. And you're right, it's a culture thing. Though you could bet your bottom dollar the likes of Rooney would cop a big hit, get up, shrug it off, smile (or crack it) and get on with the game.

But thats down THERE. Sport is global, its played differently everywhere. I dont think its right but its a very deep rooted cultural thing, and its going to take a lot to change it. Theres no point in going over board criticising individuals over it. If you and me grew up around the same people, we'd probably play football the same way, except i doubt as well as Cristiano ronaldo. :smirk:

Secondly, theres no relation between shirking from any issue and doing what these players do. Its just part of their game, Ronaldo for me sets higher standards for himself than most players out there and being the best and performing at the highest level means more to him than most. One of his greatest traits is his ability to deal with responsibility and pressure. IMO hes very very good at it. Not many can be so hated and yet do even better.

Finally, and not directed to you but about ronaldo in general - well fecking done man. Criticised left, right and centre and clearly not at his best but keeps producing the goods. Gotten us some big goals this season when we havent been playing well at all. Wprld class.

Are you watching Messi, are you watching?

Since the final rounds of the CL are here, here is the chance for everyone who posted on this thread to actually back their opinions at the cost of being embarrassed later on :

Whose pocket will Messi hide in this time ?

a) Llahm
b) Cashley/Arebeloa
c) Evra/Clichy
d) All of the above, Barca will lose and Messi fanboi's will disappear till the next season until Messi demolishes shite defenders in Laliga again
e) All of the above but Barca will be carried by Eto'o, Henry, Xavi and Iniesta but Messi fanboi's will still claim he is the greatest since Maradona and dominated all the teams
f) None of the above and Messi fanboi's will have the last laugh

It's worse, they show blind dislike for the lad despite him hardly being in the Ronaldo bracket of likability, they find him so threatening because he's better than Ronaldo that they resort to playground tactics and belittlement. I can accept that Ronaldo is world class, one of the best and would be one of the first names on the team sheet in any team in the world. Yes i don't particularly like his style or his attitude but that doesn't blind me to the fact he can make the difference and does so quite often. Despite being shite yesterday he still scored 2 goals which without the team wouldnt have won, on the other hand i could point out that villas second goal was a result of Ronaldo giving the ball away for about the 10th time...
