SAF is a genius but being the manager of Manchester United puts him in a position where he would be pretty stupid to say anyone but Ronaldo is the best. The reasons are so obvious i don't understand why people make the point. Cal? made it when talking about respected figures who think Ronaldo is the best (usually taken from a year or two ago anyway) and they all had something in common. Having a special relationship with United or Portugal meaning they would almost certainly praise the best from UNited or Portugal respectfully.

Capello and Lippi have no agenda, they says it how they sees it. If anything you would think Capello might choose a prem player because he is now doing his thing in England. As for Lippi he is good friends with SAF but these men have no agenda unlike the manager of the player etc

Maybe if one italian was anywhere near that level at the moment they would throw his name into the hat out of personal bias but since there isn't they are left with a basically impartial view. Of course Cal? will tell you it's la liga bias, or anti Prem bias, or some sort of bias because no-one can seriously think Messi is better than his Ronaldo without some sort of bias.
 
Interesting what qualifies as 'rubbish'. He's still been at the heart of most things Barca have done well, and is easily their biggest threat on the pitch. But they're down to 10 men, and struggling to break down a very dogged and determined Espanyol. Albeit they've breached them once and there's 18 minutes to go

But I guess there isn't all that much opportunity to get a dig in at the lad, so go ahead, have your moment
 
I have changed my mind. I still think Messi is TBPITW, but Ronaldo is not inferior to Messi at his best.

for half an hour he was unplayable against Atletico but he was playing so far forward in the 2nd half he couldn't have as much influence. I can understand Guardiolas tactics of having him push far forward to be effective in the final 3rd but when you are trailing or going for the win you want him on the ball running at defenders and making things happen.

Great goal though.

I did and I don't remember it being particularly great. One of the Lyon players played a 1-2 with him in the Lyon box for feck sakes. There are literally plenty of players in world football who could have scored that goal. Lyons defending was absolutely atrocious last night an' all, seriously piss poor. Absolutely every goal was down to abysmal defending, they made Madrid's back four look on par with Milans from the 80's. Also Henry's celebration annoyed me. i thought I had goteen over the sight of his annoying face, but nope- I still haven't.

So chesting it down, beating 3 players with close control, playing a one two with Eto'o, taking a touch then cooling passing the ball into the bottom corner in the last 16 of the champions league is a goal literally plenty of players in world football could score?

STrangely enough that's the first time i've seen a goal like that this season...

It was a good goal, but he almost effectively ran directly towards goal whilst Lyon players ran around him, I don't actually remember any of them really bothering to put in a half decent tackle. If Rio or Vidic were playing, he wouldn't have got anywhere near goal. I don't really see why you mentioned it was the last 16 of the champions league, we both know Lyon looked beaten the second Henry got his second. That was a really half arsed performance from them last night. When Marquez can play a looping ball over the top of your entire defence, you know it's not going to be your night

Marquez is a defender with a magnificent range of passing. He typically hits 5 or 6 world class passes a match, it's his defensive abilities that are sometimes questioned but his passing from the back is seriously in a league of its own.

He's a good passer of the ball for a defender, howeve he's by no means "his passing from the back is seriously in a league of its own" as you described.

There are plenty of defenders who can pass from the back just as well if not better than Marquez.
 
After the Spanish league got shown up as a below average one this week, I'm not convinced about this uber-season of Messi. With defences like Real's, Ronaldo would've scored 50 goals and got similar number of assists by now. Divide any player's league goals/assists in la liga by 3 and you'll get a much more accurate rating of that player.

why would he? has he been uniteds stand out best player? has he had a good season? has he ripped teams apart like he did last year or the year before?

he has one goal in the champions league, a tap in header, all the work done by rooney. Messi has scored vital goals in almsot every game in the champions league. So measure them on that if Spain is so shit.

Aletico madrid didnt get beaten by liverpool, does that make them decent despite not winning against porto? Does barca thrashing lyon mean nothing? Villareal are through so still two teams from spain have made it. More than anywhere but England.

Before FV interrupts with a post full of bs, Ronaldo had to beat his men and get to the ball. Just look at Ibra 'who by all means is a quality striker' and see how easy it is to put away one of those balls.

Point is i don't see how being cut open by a pass from Marquez who is a good passer (and in my opinion the best long range passing central defender in the world) equates to Lyon bottling it and being defensively terrible.

Just like i dont buy into a team who are 2-0 down and if they score two goals will be in the lead decide the game is over in the first half and let a player seemingly walk past them to score a "goal anyone can score".

But it wasn't. It's ridiculous to think that. If you don't see what was good about that goal then you don't appreciate dribbling at its best.

I watched the clip again, he controlled the ball beat their defenders, played a one-two with Eto and slotted home from a fair distance, a great goal he made it look easy. Ronaldo's goal was just another centre forward finish, as always he found some space in the last line of defence and headed the ball in, Messi would've done it with his hands. The only great thing about our goal was Rooney's brilliant delivery from the left.

But against the same shite defending of Villareal and Barcelona, Ronaldo wasn't able to cut it to any extent, even against a second string Brazilian midfield he was rendered ineffective although being the best player in the premier league. Does that mean our league as a whole is rubbish? PL was never the best in the world when Henry was scoring for fun or when Keane and Beckham were in their pomp and you can extend your theory and coclude all of them were mediocre footballers. :wenger:

Messi is no god but he's in a different level compared to the likes of Ronaldo and the rest. Except some blinkered United and Portugal fans, the rest wouldn't find it hard to agree on that.

No mate, as you said Ronaldo's was a better goal - Complete shite. Ronaldo scores a header in the 6 yard box and Messi dribbles it past 3 players with a one-two and calmly slots it in the corner.

By the way no one can dribble like Messi can and that's not being a fan boy thats just how it is. The best dribbling and close control in the world.

I'd say he is the world class bracket and not the 'very good'.
