I think its fair to say Ronaldo has never been this good, in a single game or over a period of few months.

:nono: Ronaldo during 07/08 was as good if not better than Messi ever was or has been this season.

And Ronaldo has everything that mattered from 07/08 to prove it. As of now, Messi has nothing.

He had a good game against a strong team. What's to argue about the kid is a fantastic player end of. I'd have no problems welcoming him at OT.

This strong team would be the one who are 5pts behind the likes of Serbia & Lithuania and in danger of missing out on the World Cup?

It is not even close imo. He was much closer to Messi during 06-07, but Messi is still better.

Messi individually is a better player. What he wins at the end of the season should not effect your opinion on how good he was through out the season.

Hypothetically speaking Cal, if Messi played for Numancia, for example, scored 50 goals and assisted another 30, yet due to Numancia's (hypothetically) poor defence, they bizarrely managed to get relegated and ended up winning feck all, would that make Messi a worse player?

As Ronaldo said, "You're entitled to your opinion, the trophies that matter are at his house."

Ronaldo is the more effective player (when at his best) and winning things does matter because if Barca end up winning little (or nothing), it would mean either they're not as good as you think (losing in the CL), or they bottled it big time (in La Liga).

I don't think barca are worth all the hype, but Barca winning nothing doesn't mean Messi has a poor season individually.

Have you ever seen a team score 80 goals in a season and get relegated?

Did I ever say he's having a poor season? Stop putting words into my mouth (well posts)...

He's clearly having a great season that could be as good as Ronaldo's 07/08, but I've said time and again that he's not there yet.

If they win the CL as well as La Liga (which they should with little problem), then we can compare Messi 08/09 to Ronaldo 07/08.

Cal's insistence on measuring a player's worth only in trophies truly is mindboggling.

So if he's injured for the CL final and they lose, he wasn't as good as Ronaldo...

An 18-20 year Messi on song was already better than our Ronaldo or Ronaldinho has ever been. Its only a matter of time before even some of our blinkered fans, accepts the fact.

You and your Messi was the star player when Barca last won the CL theory again.

You try so desperately to rewrite history in favour of Messi that it makes me wonder if you have some kind of unhealthy obsession with the guy.

Why don't you try to explain how Messi was man of the match when Ronaldinho scored 2 goals against Real Madrid and got a standing ovation at the Bernabeu...

eh? Ronaldinho at his peak was unplayable, absolutely sensational. I wouldn't even say that Ronaldo on his peak last year was better than the Ronaldinho of 2005. Messi is incredible these days, but he hasn't reached those heights of Ronaldinho yet.

World Player of the Year 2009 is already in his bag though, the only other real contender I can see is Eto'o if he continues to score ridiculous amount of goals.

Trophies are not the only way to measure players, but it certainly plays a big part.

If he's injured for the CL final and they lose, I'd be delighted, as long as it's not against Liverpool.

Both Ronaldo and Messi have already surpassed Ronaldinho imo.

No he wasn't. Ronaldinho was clearly the star performer when Messi was a teenager.

It depends who wins the CL, if Messi and co choke against Lyon and United retain the trophy with Ronaldo scoring a few in the latter stages, he still has every chance of retaining his awards.

Pele and Maradona never won the CL,

so Smicer>>>>>>>>>> Pele and Maradona

It helps to have won the World Cup, has Messi won the World Cup?

Also, there is a slight difference between being the star player for a CL winning team (Ronaldo 07/08 or Ronaldinho 04/05) compared to being a squad player (Smicer).

So let me see if I am getting this right:

Ronaldo didn't win the league for Barcelona.

The winning teams have the best players.

ergo, Real Madrid must have had at least one player better than Ronaldo that season.

Extend same logic also to his tenure at Inter.

Ronaldinho 04/05 was arguably as good as Ronaldo 07/08, it remains to be seen if Messi can emulate that in 08/09.

Ronaldo has not reached the heights of Ronaldinho, and I'm not sure he has it within him to become that good a footballer.

No disrespect obviously, but Ronaldinho was a bit of a genius.

Another wankfest over Messi.

Can we at least wait till the CL resumes?

Bahaha, oh the fecking irony.

You say that, then every single fecking chance you get you go on about how much better Ronaldo is.

You beat yourself silly FAR FAR more than anyone else on here.

And for the record as good as Ronaldo was last season he wasn't as good as Messi is playing ATM. And it's not just the stats that prove it.

I don't understand this obsession with stats either. You don't have to score 40 goals to be better than Ronaldo.

He's a fecking plank.

Everyone should just ignore him and hopefully he'll go away.

He takes it like he's been personally affronted. That's the definition of fanboii.

And it's not like we're belittling Ronaldo in any way. It just so happens that someone else has come and taken their game a (slightly) higher level.

You're entitled to your opinion, Ronaldo has all the trophies at his house. :smirk:

Half a good season and he's already better than the best player in the World and you don't think you're belittling Ronaldo?

But, but, nobody could possibly be better than CR7! WTF?!

ROFL, Messi hasn't even won the World Cup! LMAO!

Smirk?

This implies you've achieved something? Remind me, what have you actually done that allows you to mince around here like you're above everyone else?

And then tell me what the actual relevance of that remark is?

No he wasn't. Ronaldinho was clearly the star performer when Messi was a teenager.

Watched them operate together a lot and when both were fit and in full flow Messi was better in dominating over any opposition. Ronaldinho being the star performer was never a point of debate, he was the in his peak fitness, consistent and the best player in the world then. Messi from 04 to the middle of 05 was used few and far between, Rijkaard played him only for 60 minutes or unleashed him in the last 20 minutes or so. Unlike Goofy Ronaldo they didnt break the world record to acquire him had the luxury to wrap him under wool and use him sparingly.

I keep repeating the same thing again. Comparing Messi with Ronaldinho is like comparing Fat Ronaldo with Ronalindho. Ronaldinho offers more attacking threat, two footed, acrabotic, tricks, more dangerous in set pieces etc but Messi in his initial days like Ronaldo blew away any opposition whenever he had the ball at his feet, irrespective of even three or four players hacking him down.

I'm pretty sure I get to determine whether or not I'm belittling Ronaldo or not, as it's MY opinion.

You seem to think I (we) are all against Ronaldo, as you've taken it all personally. This is because you're a fanboii gimp.

Ronaldo is an absolutely fantastic player, his 07/08 season was mind-boggling. Messi, however, is playing a superior brand of Football ATM.

No, it's the likes of you who hold your opinions as "facts" who try to act like you're above everyone.

How it was a fact that Henry was the best player in the World, how it's a fact that Messi si the best player in the World, yada yada.

I've always said that everyone is entitled to their opinion, in fact, I just did that in the very post you quoted!

The relevance of the remark is that the football world recgonises Ronaldo as the best player in the world, Messi could win those awards next year, but as of now, there is every justification to call Ronaldo THE BEST PLAYER IN THE WORLD!!

You're entitled to your opinion, doesn't mean I'm not entitled to disagree with it. Ultimately, isn't that the point of football forums?

Even in some matches when Ronaldinho appeared unplayable there were still loads of Barca fans that rated Deco was better overall in influencing the game.

Ronaldinho even in his pomp never attracted comments that compared him was past greats, although he was undisputably the best player in the world after Zidane but still Henry and Kaka were also playing some great football matched his performances every week. As for Messi there was never an indifferent opinion about him after he broke through, it was apparent, if he stays injury free he could easily surpass all modern day greats.
