this is an ok article discussing that very point
http://www.averageopposition.com/2012/03/the-myth-of-maradona.html
what stats cant take into account though is the elegance and magic that you felt when maradonna was on the ball - like gazza he played as if he was the best kid in school and just wanted to tear up the playground! plattini Zidane Ronaldo are all great players and you can make an argument for any of them being as good / better if you want - but Zico, Maradonna and Messi just have that special spark when they get the ball - well for me anyway and no stats can ever show that
Aye. That article misses the point. It's a narrow selection of stats designed to fit one agenda. And it relies solely on those stats at the expense of any qualitative assessment, which is quite important when we're not assessing penalty-box poachers. It's the same as judging the best keeper in the history of the game as the one who conceded the fewest goals.

I'd just like to point out that Ruud's record there is utterly phenomenal. The best ratio there? A testament to how good he really was.

Probably played in the worst team an' all. Feel for Ruud a bit.Carried an awful United team for a period and should have won so much more.

Look at where they were scored though. Barely scored at all in the knockouts which highlights how bad the team was, but also that he was a bit of a flat track bully in Europe.

RvN's record in CL knock-out stage: 13 apps, 6 goals, 2 assists. That's pretty decent, especially considering the opponents (Galactico Madrid, Bayern, Super Depor, Leverkusen that time they reached the final).

I suppose that is actually better than it appears in the wiki stats.

I did always marvel at his goals in the group stages in any case, he just scored and scored and scored. I miss him.

How much would you want a prime RvN to be in the current United team now? He was my favourite player at the time.

Some twitter gossip saying that Messi is not in list of top 3 in ballon d'or.

Robben, Neuer and Ronaldo apparently. It's quite astonishing how quick everyones turned against Messi, He's paying the price for not hitting the same extraordinary standards he set two years ago. One set of rules for him, another for everyone else.

dont try to defend him, you will be called a messi fanboi, because for some people, is ridiculous to argue that a player that scored 41 goals, and assisted 14 times in 46 games (messi) is better than a player that scored 21 goals and assisted 17 times on 45 games (robben)

If Messi and Ronaldo aren't the first two on the list (regardless who is first), then it's, in the words of a certain Drogba, a "fecking disgrace"!

Seriously though, that can't be real.

A rumour at the moment, but who knows. Look at the recent La Liga awards, Carlos Vela was voted one of the La Liga forwards of last year with Costa and Ronaldo... ahead of Messi.

If people start to underrate and undervalue him, he will only become better in my opinion. He has that type of character.

I think Ronaldo deserves to win it but Messi has to be at no.2 if he misses out.

Relative to his form a few years ago, sure he's not playing as well but he's comfortably better than anyone else.

Barcelona are wasting his best years too. Refusal to buy in the positions that need strengthening and refusal to get a decent manager in, same stale tactics.

It seems to be getting to the stage where he's done so much and been so incredible that he's now got to go even beyond that to win the awards. Would be a bit ridiculous if he doesn't make it into the top 3 - if you had to choose between Messi or Robben, for example, you'd still pick Messi every single time. Anyone else that had the past year Messi has had would undoubtedly be in the top 2 alongside Ronaldo.

As much as I appreciate the sentiment of giving it to someone different, these awards can't be taken seriously if that's their approach. It'd be like us winning 3 in a row, before giving it to Arsenal instead to change it up a bit.

They're not as impressive as they once were, but I'm not sure I'd go as far as saying they're wasting his best years.

He just got hit in the head by a water bottle from the stands lol, saved Barca in the last minute again by creating a good chance which was finished by Busquets after the ball rebounded off the Valencia keeper.

Don't really matter that he's not on the top 3 Ballon D'or list this year, Ronaldo has been better for the last 2 years and will probably win it again. Barca need to build the team and play around Messi again, Not sure why they bought Suarez when Messi can easily score 60+goals a season.

They wanted him to drop deep and create chances for Suarez and Neymar to finish, because after Xavi's and Iniesta's decline their midfield has struggled to create enough chances.

3 hattricks in his past 4 games apparently, its safe to say he's back to his best so. Imagine we had someone like him or Ronaldo scoring for us, can bet any money we'd be on top of the league.

Has anyone got a statistic for number of chances created in La Liga this season? He must be way out in front. Could have had 4 goals and 3 assists to his name today alone.

Its just amazing how he manages to churn chance after chance despite his team being bang average right now. They could have been 2-0 down in the first half and struggled to create anything despite having the lions share of possession. The only shining light was Messi, somehow creating chances out of nothing with inch perfect passes...

They improved after Pedro and Iniesta came on though. Rakitic looked underwhelming tbh. Messi is just fantastic to behold...
