Fantastic player, it has to be said. Didin't know some of these.
Fantastic from you too, Vato. Way too often you get fans who'd be blinded by their hate for their rivals, that they'd do or say anything to discredit players.

Yeah, Messi. Unbelievable.

Tbf, there are a few of those circling the Ronaldo thread like vultures waiting for him to do 'something wrong' on or off the pitch. But yeah, it's better to ignore people like that.

The goals records speak for themselves but there's no way people have been counting assists for the entirety of the CL and La Liga.

I came into this thread thinking everyone will be discussiong some comments that have been going around today of him saying he's unsure whether he will have to leave Barcelona due to this situation at the club.

Perhaps they are fake then.

Indeed. Loads to be skeptical about here wrt methodology: timeframe (for example modern CL is at least plausible, EC however? dito for La Liga, starting from a certain cut-off point in the 90s or 00s, but before that?) and definition of an assist (strict or "wide"). This La Liga assist stat popped up a couple of weeks ago I think, with an unsourced tweet that Figo was all-time assist leader in La Liga with 107 (the number itself seems plausible enough, whether or not that includes everyone since 1929... far, far less so). Then someone else mentioned Xavi being on 109 league assists (which I think this is based on), so even there it's confusion.

For the CL it's 100% incorrect, and likely not even close unless they only started counting in the mid-00s (like this site http://www.statbunker.com/alltimestats/AllTimeCompetitionMostAssists?comp_code=UCL).

Also it's wrong on the NT goals, Messi is on 45 currently (or 44 if this image was created more than a week ago), Batistuta had 56...

The only one of those assist stats with any sort of credibility is the el clásico one, which I've first seen posted by a Spanish amateur statistician who's worked with ESPN, etc. who at least listed the top assisters which included players from the 1950s like Molowny and Basora. This is an updated version from the most recent game, based off of that original tweet from @MisterChip.

It obviously won't be to us if he leaves so I really hope he doesn't. Him coming to another premier leGue team will be unbarable to watch and painful for that team's rivals. Might be the right move for him to move for his career though. Barca have regressed and have a rransfer ban and a newbie manager in charge.

Woodward...
De Gea
Rafael - Laporte - Hummels - Shaw
Blind
Herrera - Strootman
Di Maria
Falcao - Messi

Wait, he signs an extension every 6 months?
Weirdly yeah. Maybe not every 6 months but it seems like a season doesn't go by where he hasn't signed an extension to his contract. He did for sure sign one halfway through the last season though.

Almost! He has signed 5 extensions in the last 6 years if I am not wrong.

Wow.

fecking money minting, tax evading little pest.

Ok, I don't know if Marca did actually report this. But Marca can report anything

^^^ LOL! Ronaldo's PR team doing an excellent job to ensure their boy wins the Ballon d'Or again.

Doubt he'd need PR to win it, he's been better than Messi the past two years, funnily enough though Messi has been twice the player of the third best player.. they're too good the pair of them!

I don't get the whole PR thing though, its voted by professionals, doubt they pay attention to the papers.

The only way to accurately calculate the assist numbers would be to go back and watch every friggin goal scored, or somehow find match reports/club reports that kept track of which player passed to the player that scored.

there must be an easier way, like if a team scored less goals during every CL than Messis assist you can discard their players

and remember i said "like if"

How would City afford him with all these restrictions in place?

We should only have these restrictions in place this season provided everything goes to plan. Regardless, can't see us being able to afford Messi even without restrictions as it would surely mean we then failed FFP again.

I have no idea what you're on about here. I'm referring to assist numbers from eras gone by.

well if you consider, for instance that there are a lot of teams that played the european club championship and scored less goals that messi's assist, theres no need to watch every goal that they scored to count the assists

I believe there were plenty of 4-2, 5-3 scorelines in the past eras. I know you don't want anything that might drop Messi's achievements down a notch or two, but that's not the goal, rest assured.
