Lionel Messi

Urgh. I said it doesn't break any of the rules in the laws, so it was a yellow. But if I was to judge whether I would personally give it a red, then I would. It's an unbelievably stupid tackle which had no intention on winning the ball, but instead completely obstructs Messi from doing absolutely anything. Read my posts before trying to correct me.

I read you post. What am saying is that something like a shirt pull or a hand across the body to foul a player arent football tackles either. If you'd go ahead and change the rule to a red for this, we'd see a ridiculous number of sending offs.

Where does it say that rugby tackles are red cards in the football rulebook then?

Do people seriously not bother reading posts half a page up?

Law 12 (red card offense):

  • Serious foul play (a violent foul)
  • Violent conduct (any other act of violence) e.g. assaulting the referee.
  • Spitting at anyone or another player
  • A deliberate handling offense to deny an obvious goal-scoring opportunity by any player other than a goalkeeper in his own penalty area
  • Committing an offence that denies an opponent an obvious goal-scoring opportunity (informally known as a professional foul)
  • Using offensive, insulting or abusive language or gestures
  • Receiving a second caution (yellow card) in the same game
Did not do any of those. It was a ridiculous foul, but still only merits a yellow. If I was in control of the rules I would have no problem dishing out a red.

I know there isn't a rule, I just highlighted them here. I said if I was in charge of this match, and there was leniency to such rules, I woul consider giving a red due to the stupidity of such a foul.

Seems the 'can he play Stoke on a cold winters night?' gets everywhere...

At Barcelona, Mascherano pays alongside another international colleague, Lionel Messi, who he claims is the best player he has ever seen.
"There are people who say Leo could not play against Stoke," he added. "Stoke City? That he cannot play in England? Leo can play anywhere, against anyone. How can anyone doubt that?"

Resent Mascherano interview.

At one point he skipped past Toure's tackle like it was nothing. It was such a beauty of a dribble and he does it in almost every game.

Are you talking about the little run he did, and Toure slid in? If so, then I was impressed by that too. Like you said, it's the norm

True, also even when he didn't have his most impressive display, I'm quite impressed with his passing which looks incredibly effortless for him. You can see most people aiming at players; he just finds them with ease.

Very happy with him scoring the goal that put city really up agains it.

However, he seemed to play very within himself. I'm used to watching him burn defenders for fun. Yesterday he was often strolling about just happy playing short passes. Is this due to him coming back from injuries or some shift as a player?

I think he's talking about pronunciation.

You don't his first name like you do for Lionel Ritchie.

It is supposed to be Lee-o-nel.
True, but they spell issac the same as us (If memory serves me right when I watched Julia's eyes - hey another name!) just pronounce it different. It doesn't matter, its when they translate names that really pisses me off, like calling Franz Ferdinand Francis, that's not his NAME.

There was a bit of chat in the Barca thread the other day about Messi looking low on energy and intensity, even after that two month layoff.

During Argentina's midweek game the cameras spotted Messi throwing up, not projectile vomiting green bile or anything so dramatic, just a clearing of the throat, but one that went rather further than the "bit of phlegm" stage. It's happened a few times this season, with Barcelona and with Argentina, in Spain and on his travels.

Messi not surprisingly says it's nothing, but the Spanish TV shows don't give in so easily, hence Tata Martino got asked about it at the pre-match press conference today.

I lazily waited until Marca translated Martino's the remarks into English before posting. Personally I'm surprised he said anything other than something nice and vague like, he's seen the doctor, he'll be fine - but Spanish clubs do tend to be more open about injuries and medical reports.

Finally, Martino revealed that he has spoken to Messi about his vomiting: "It's something that happens to him regularly. He's even seen specialists. The way I see it it's not normal, but it doesn't affect his game".
Martino: "Messi throwing up isn't normal" - MARCA.com (English version)

Probably he's a bit under the weather!

Could just be problems with stomach acidity. Argentina cuisine, i.e. grilled meat, red wine followed by a cup of coffee will do that to you. Not to mention stress.

I watched that match and saw it happen early on, at first I thought he was bleeding because it didn't look clear to me. But it's true, it's happened before. He claimed dehydration but it seemed awfully early in the match to be that. Some matches where he vomits, he'll still go on to show no ill effects but I thought he looked less than 100%. You could see the coaching staff passing him water throughout the 1st half, I figured he has a bug.

It's also common in early pregnancy stages.

It must have been a long pregnancy, they've got video from 2011 throwing up mid game - even by elephant standards that's a long time. It would certainly seal his place in footballing history though.

Anyway, he moved to reassure the fans on the subject.
"It's nothing. It happens all the time - at home, in training, in matches. I don't know what it is, but I've had lots of tests. I just take a pill and then I feel fine."

So there you go.

It still annoys me how some people call him "Lionel" Messi as in "Lionel" Ritchie.

That's exactly what I say too, stuffed if I'm going to say "lee on nel Messi" Lionel. Think too many people get too into foreign names and stuff, even saw someone on here, Redcafe an English speaking forum put "Cote D' Ivoire" or whatever it is for a thread on them at the world cup. Convinced they just wanted to show off, I mean we don't go around putting Deutshland on here do we. Lionel just like Ritchie, for me!

Anything else more than once is just too much Robot Wars commentator or Matt Smith on Itv "Fernando Doh res" Don't work with an Lionel's but if I did, living in England, I'd not be calling him Lee on nell that's for sure. Same rule applies for Dirk 'kite' kowt, Corzorlla/Cathorler and all the rest of it. Each to their own though.

Back on the subject of the wet night in Stoke thing, Messi is a top player and no doubt might play amazing there but we'll never know, or is it Crystal Palace now? Pulis Stoke at home was a handful for a lot of teams, Arsenal had a nightmare there and they are as close to Spainish/Dutch play as we have in the Premier League.

A certain Portuguese player has proved it in both but as it stands, Messi has not and who know's if he went to England, Italy, France, Germany, Holland etc if he'd find a country or league he can't settle in. Its not impossible just because he's the worlds best dribbler!

Recall him moaning to the media about Rangers I think it was because he had a frustrating night, they didn't play his way. Think he said "anti football" and whilst he may have had a point, same with old Stoke, or Big Sams Bolton, Mourinhos teams at times, football is about all styles and finding a way, as long as its in the rules.

"It's incredible," he said. "Rangers didn't want to play football. They practised anti-football from the first minute and it's a shame we couldn't take victory because we created a good number of chances. We just didn't put them away. I think that when they come to the Camp Nou everything is going to be very different."

Sounded a bit rattled to me... wet night at Palace/Stoke twice a season, who knows. :D

lionel messi is about the closest thing to george best, only leo is a better shooter and passer. there's not one reason that has any substance as to why leo should falter at the premier league. this wet night at stoke thing is ridiculous but have your fun if you want. it's just a bit funny how many players have become more dominant upon leaving la liga and playing in the premier league, RATHER then being stifled or hindered by this wet night in england theory. the likes of cazorla, silva, mata, have become the best players in the country the moment they set foot here and yet it's plausible that we question messi, a funny world it is, the mind of a bored football fan.

What's the difference between those who reckon he'd struggle in the wet at Stoke to those who believe he's 100% certain to succeed in the PL?

Myself I reckon he'd do well and would love to see him here but its not a given is it, nor is it just about the weather, it would be a complete change for him, language, food, culture, weather, team style the lot. He'd certainly get kicked a lot more too and the rolling about doesn't work as well here. Until he moves we won't know and there examples of La Liga players who've gone either way, for most leagues in fact.
