Lionel Messi

Messi probably the best player in the last century, he had gene therapy when he was younger because of a growth disorder, so years ago his injury to his thigh was to do with that, so he had to have a special training regime.

He's done very well obviously and he's an amazing player to watch, it's a shame that we don't have a player like him in the premier league, or that it would be some time before we see a player like him again.

I didn't know he was that old.

Don't know about his overall game being on another level but his ball control when he is on a run definitely is.

Of course he is kristao. It's Lionel Messi.

It depends on what you mean as his "overall" game because no one would expect him to win many headers etc. But when we talk about what makes him so potent, then he's dribbling, close control, ability to beat players, playmake, score, assist and even his passing (through balls) puts him on another level.

It was nice to see him like that last night. Not just playing well (though not at his best) but looking up for it. He's had a couple of other good games since he came back from the two month layoff, the game against Sevilla comes to mind, but he's looked lethargic in other games.

Saving himself for the CL and the World Cup or not yet fit? Whatever it is, March is a good time to come back into form.

He's good, but if they got offered crazy money selling him could potentially benefit the team. I'm probably in the minority, but I'd probably take Cavani plus Thiago Silva over Messi. Throw a Kroos or Gundogan in too and I think they'd definitely be a better team than they would be if they kept him. It's not as though they don't have other talented attackers either.

I imagine that he willl remain a top player for years to come, but I think he's probably peaked already. To be fair though, it was some peak.

you mad.

lol, I would take Messi over whole PSG team to United.

The finish for his goal was better on each viewing. When it first happened it was so quick I thought it was his "weaker" right foot finish, but to chip it like he did with the outside of his left foot was just genius. Hes set standards so high that him having a great season statistically rather than an out of this world season is seen as disappointing.

Maybe. I wouldn't actually swap him for just Cavani and Silva having thought about it. I suppose the point I was trying to make was that I don't think he'll be good enough to make up for Barca's deficiencies in other areas.

I don't think it's that outlandish to suggest swapping him for the world's best defender, one of the best midfielders, and one of the best strikers in the world(maybe Cavani was a bad example, let's say Suarez instead) could benefit the team, it's unlikely all three would get injured at the same time for a start.

Barca have only won 4 out of 9 league games since Messi returned from injury, and have lost 3 out of their last 6 having previously only lost one league game all season. I'm not blaming Messi for these results, I just think that with a better defence and cover for an ageing Xavi they could have done better in that time; with or without Messi. I don't think Barca would miss Messi as much as poeple think, in fact I'm pretty sure they've scored a similar amount of goals with or without him in the team this season, though admittedly he missed some cup games against minnows and has played in most of their toughest games.

Best player in the world, but, as long as they strengthen in other areas, I still think Barca could cope without him. They won a Champions League without him, and that was with an inferior, though more exciting, team to the one they've got now.

It doesn't make much sense, but, I rate him as the best player in the world, in the top three of all time, and still feel he's a tad overrated.

So messi is now overrated because he was out injured for a few months, after being the world player of the year 4 years in a row, being the main part of the best team ever arguably and scoring over 50 goals a season for the past 5 years, along with multiple assists and just being brilliant all around. Incredible how him being out makes everyone forget how remarkable of a player he really is.

I'm not denying he's remarkable, I wouldn't rate him as the best player in the world if that was the case. All I'm trying to say is that no player is indispensable, not even Messi. Your point about him playing in the best team ever surely makes things easier for him anyway and surely the best team ever could cope without one player. That stuff is in the past anyway, I was just thinking from Barca's point of view moving forward.

I don't actually think he is overrated, but, the impact his departure would have on Barca's team is. Look at Ronaldo's departure, fair enough we weren't as good as we were with him, but we still made another CL final after he left while he made it to none in a supposedly superior team.

Basically I think you could swap him with a few world class players and Barca could potentially be better off. Nobody else seems to agree, that's fair enough.

The same could be said for pretty much every all-time great as well, as they were usually part of the best teams of all time... all except for Maradona.

All time greats of any area are indispensable. Pele, Di Stefano, Maradona and Messi, take these players out and replace them with four or five other others still the respective teams would lose their sheen. Even if Barcelona ropes in Hazard, Van Persie, Gotze, Muller along with some one else to replace Messi, they wouldn't fare any better. The problem for them is not Messi, its the unbalanced team a wobbling backline and Iniesta/ Xavi ain't certainly the players they once were. As for Neymar it would definitely take him three full seasons to establish himself and he also remains an enigma can easily go in the Denilson way.

United after Ronaldo's departure reached the CL finals when the competitors were mediocre with a lucky draw on our side. Its not Ronaldo's departure that has brought down United, its failing to replace him proper footballers that has taken its toll.. Had we blown Ronaldo's money on the likes of Toure, Aguero and Hazard or retained Tevez, may be went for Van Persie bit earlier with the Glazers willing to match the wages, , United would've only improved. You cannot expect the likes of Young, Owen, Phil Jones to win leagues and the CL playing along with Berbatov, Nani and Rooney all operating at their own pace.

As for Messi against City, he played only 75% of his actual potential far from the explosive Messi of 2005-2007 let alone the player of the Guardiola ets but still comfortably above any one else.
... on the pitch...

I think they are big buddies it's all, Messi said few times Aguero is big friend of his, and he votes for him as best player for Ballon d'or.

All time leading goal scorer in Barca history with 370 goals.
A hat trick today. Also the first player in top 5 leagues to reach 10 league goals in 2014.

The King is back!

Amazing capture!

How do you become the leading goalscorer all time of a club like barcelona at only 26 years old?

He's got 31 goals in 33 games with 12 assists this season, and yet it's considered a pitifully unproductive season compared to the seasons he's already had before.

The standard's people have for him are just ridiculously unfair, and he surpasses them on a regular basis.

Hopefully he recovers his physical form and really picks up from here.

In fact, he'd already become Barcelona's all-time leading scorer in official competitions back in 2012, when he was still only 24. The record he broke now includes goals in friendlies. The previous holder, Paulino Alcántara, played in an era before national leagues came into existence on the continent (e.g. La Liga was founded in 1929) and the only official competitions in place were the Copa del Rey and small-scale regional leagues and cups, so clubs played loads of friendlies throughout the year to fill their schedules. Don't know about the accuracy of the following figures, but wiki has Alcántara at 369 goals in all (incl. friendlies), of which 142 came in official competitions (he's listed at #6 in this category, ahead of the likes of Eto'o, Rivaldo, Kluivert, etc.).

Imagine a player in our team having those stats  He's by some distance the best player I have ever watched. Simply unreal at his best.

I used to have some reservations about messi earlier because he was in such an incredible team and maybe there was a slight bias too due to his Barcelona team slapping us silly in two finals, but over time I've grown to more and more appreciate this little genius. The way for example, he made kompany his bitch the other day, something he's done to the best sides, is unique and something we won't see a long while.

Yeah. The ultimate acknowledgement to his talents are when you're trying to watch Barca play without Messi. He's the fella that turned that from a great side, into one of the best ever IMO.
