Lionel Messi

When his speed goes he is going to be just as devestating in midfield.

This is why I see him as a better player than Ronaldo. Sure Ronnie is an excellent forward, but he could not do the things Messi does in the passing department.

Ronaldo scores headers and has broad shoulders. That makes him a more complete footballer.

Watching those 3 clips, from one player, in one game... When was the last time you seen a United player make a diagonal run in behind the defence of that kind, and get picked out with the through ball or ball over the top?

I was going to point that out yesterday. We don't play those balls in behind often enough for some reason - (the runs or movement in behind is probably to blame for that). Although, i don't see many of our players even thinking about attempting some of these passes as they lack the ability/confidence to even try something out of the ordinary which is very concerning.

Where have BBC got this stat of him having 36 assists in his 20 games this year. Considering they've scored 49 times(quick calculation giving sub on/off apps) with him on, and he's scored 18 of them......I wouldn't be overly bothered if they weren't actually highlighting it in one article.

Well, he assisted himself in 5 goals. He's that good.

 Clearly no faith in his Sociedad teammates there. Understandably so.

I prefer Ronaldo, but Messi is the only player who gets that on his highlight reels. Calamitous, yet amazing!

Right in front of the ref, as well. Not sure how you can't give a straight red there, nowhere near football

That's never a red card though.

Clear yellow for sabotaging the play but how can that be a red card? It's a clear cut, professional foul, nothing dangerous.

I don't see how wrapping up someone and taking them to the ground like a wrestling maneuver is professional football, in any interpretation of the game. It's a tackle alright, just not a football one

Aye, but it's still never a red card.

I promise you you'll never see a ref send someone of for that.

It's not dangerous or preventing a clear goalscoring opportunity, therefore it's a yellow card.

Law 12 (red card offense):

  • Serious foul play (a violent foul)
  • Violent conduct (any other act of violence) e.g. assaulting the referee.
  • Spitting at anyone or another player
  • A deliberate handling offense to deny an obvious goal-scoring opportunity by any player other than a goalkeeper in his own penalty area
  • Committing an offence that denies an opponent an obvious goal-scoring opportunity (informally known as a professional foul)
  • Using offensive, insulting or abusive language or gestures
  • Receiving a second caution (yellow card) in the same game

Did not do any of those. It was a ridiculous foul, but still only merits a yellow. If I was in control of the rules I would have no problem dishing out a red.

Why?

It's just the same as loads of fouls, desperate professional foul whilst he's in a dangerous position. If anything rugby tackling him to the ground is probably safer than tripping him.

When it's as bloody obvious as that foul it should be. He's not attempting to play the game at all.

And that's a yellow card. Loads of players do the same, albeit a bit more subtly than here.

There's a lot of blurred lines with fouls like this I suppose. Had he raised his elbow or led with his head or something similarly retarded it'd would've been a red.

That's what I was about to say. Maybe it bizarrely shows a sign of respect. It's certainly better rugby tackling him to the ground than trying to hack his legs away.

That's a yellow in my opinion. He has no intention of playing the ball, but it's not a reckless challenge and it is merely disrupting a potential goal-scoring opportunity for Barcelona.

A reckless challenge would still be yellow though.

Its a professional foul and thus a yellow. Rugby tackle, football tackle, doesnt really matter.

Urgh. I said it doesn't break any of the rules in the laws, so it was a yellow. But if I was to judge whether I would personally give it a red, then I would. It's an unbelievably stupid tackle which had no intention on winning the ball, but instead completely obstructs Messi from doing absolutely anything. Read my posts before trying to correct me.
