Who digs through the records for this?

I did these on my own. I've been compiling match histories for some players that interest me (Messi, C. Ronaldo, Rooney, also historic ones like Pelé, Maradona, etc.)

It's not extremely detailed, but just things like goals, assists, penalties, free-kicks, start/sub. (and match info like opponent, scoreline, venue, competition). From that it's already easy to extrapolate a lot of info.

A huge plus is that he's never really injured. And if he's hurt, he's lucky to be back super early. He's not just a freak as a footballer, but also his physical strength is almost scary. Has he ever been tested??

Season in bold, still playing.

He has 44 goals already this season after 32 games, last season he played 60 games so at this current rate he'll have over 80 goals if they play 60 games. Surely he can't get much better than this, I can imagine next year if he finishes with like 70 goals people will probably be like he is starting to decline now

Only a few years ago 44 goals in the whole season would put you among the elite strikers in world football.....

That is true - 4 and a half years younger than when Telmo Zarra reached that total (which stood for 62 years), with 52 more to be top scorer ever in La Liga.

He'll have a chance to break that record before this calendar year is out if he keeps going at this current rate

It's insane really. It's funny when you grew up hearing about every new player with any potential being the new Maradona, and haven't really seen Maradona play that much you just went with it and thought that it would never happen.

Now you have Messi breaking records left, right and center, and he's making history that you know will be the pinnacle that everyone else will be compared against for decades to come. I hope he scores 150 goals next season, just to hammer home to the point.

Pretty sure it still would. I think there's a general acceptance now that for the duration of Messi's peak it's best to ignore him when considering the quality of other players.

Also, and I'm probably not entirely serious here, but does anyone else hope he has some mad, Jordan-esque moment and decides to retire after the 2014 world cup and go and do another sport? He's pretty much conquered football, it'll just get boring if he keeps doing it for another decade.

Hope he flops against us in the final though.

How many goals per season do people think he would score in the PL? The same amount, more or fewer? I think slightly fewer.

It has pretty much gotten to that, hasn't it? One metric to compare Leo and another for everyone else - I think that's pretty fair since the gap is sizable, IMO, yet shouldn't diminish the quality of other world class players.

It's simply an exceptional age headed by a unique player

We talk about this on occasion with other culés as to how he might suddenly fade. Would it be injuries, boredom, boozing, bimbos etc.? I wondered when his girlfriend got pregnant whether having a child would change him, alter his focus or singular determination to win/score in a relentless way. It's an oddity in sport, IMO. Jordan is a good example because he was a ferocious competitor and never seemed to coast although I think it's safe to assume Leo won't be trying any other sports.

He's an emotionally introverted player from what I've gathered over the years so I thought if he experienced something traumatic, even personally, it could dislodge him from his current path. However, he does seem to be growing more comfortable in the limelight and in front of a microphone. It helps too, I suppose, having teammates like Iniesta & Xavi who are pretty even keeled themselves and was around to witness the implosion of a player like Ronaldinho or petulance of Samu.

Hard to say but if anything, I have noticed his approach in games is definitely changing - he paces himself throughout a match and picks his moments to go into 'Leo mode'. Some have described it as laziness or even ego but I think he's listening to coaches who are telling him to save his energy & legs. Particularly when you consider how many minutes he plays a season, I mean is there anyone who plays more than him? That has to take a toll eventually.

Personally, I hope he takes it easier and even subs out late in matches or even rotate and miss less consequential ones but I don't see it happening. Perhaps, in the end, he'll simply fly back to whatever planet he came from eh? :D

Good post.

He'd score around the same level I reckon. Seeing how defenders shit in their pants when players run at them, Messi would cause heart attacks in the PL. Incredibly enough, his best years are definitely still ahead of him.

Indeed, and we have seen him do well against tough defenses in Europe. I don't the so called physical game in the Premier League is going to affect him at all. If anything, he will draw more fouls and after a while every defender will have to stop committing himself rashly, and we don't have many defenders who can time their tackles well against such a player. Players like Silva and Mata are good enough evidence that physicality cannot affect these turbo midgets much in this league.

The problem for him will not be the league and the opponents, but getting out of his nest. No team in this league dominates games the way Barca does, not even close. So him having to adapt in a team with completely different philosophy would be tough. I can see very few teams who have the midfield that has any chance of playing at the same wavelength as him, not many in fact.

Which team are you putting him in? If you mean if Barcelona were playing in the Prem I think he'd get fewer goals, probably only around 50 in a season.

I think Argentina of the past year and a half is a good case study for that. They hardly dominate games, in fact their midfield is probably Valencia level. Actually, it literally is that level, because Banega and Gago both play for Valencia and both are regular starters for the Argies' midfield, Banega long term injury aside.

Add to that a third midfielder who isn't anywhere near being good enough to be a starter in the Barcelona midfield and you have a midfield that is far from being a world beater.

Look at the Chile qualifiers for example, they absolutely dominated Argentina at home, like an onslaught for the first half hour, then guess what, Messi gets the ball and Bam! 1-0.

I think he'll cope, Argentina are a counter attacking team and it's actually fun seeing him go from his possession dominant Barca team, to being a very direct, counter attacking player along with Di maria and Higuain, and he does it pretty damn good too.

Yeah, he has been managing well for his country off late, had a pretty good record last year for them. I am worried that he will be played in a deep role again in the next World Cup. It is inevitable, that midfield is bound to get overrun by most teams in Brazil 2014, and they do not have the defensive capability to sit back, soak the pressure and hit back. That would lead to him dropping deeper and deeper and ending up as a CM again. But then if Tevez, Aguero or Higuain has a great tournament, who knows, that might just work.

The last thing I wanna see in the WC is him getting marked out by fecking Schweinsteiger.

What will be even more interesting to me is how the Argies integrate Tevez and Aguero into their scheme led by Messi. Someone will have to sit, but what a bench they're going to have. Maybe we've got it all wrong and it will be Higuain and Di Maria who will come off the bench.

Tevez isn't needed.

Higuain------Aguero---------v

This is what they played in most of the qualifiers, and they were scoring for fun. Tevez is the last player they need in attack. Cuntishness aside, I'm not even sure he merits starting over any of those players.
Their problem is not in attack. Di Maria (on top form) is OK as a quasi midfielder against average teams but I'm not sure he'd cut it against the very best teams.

Agreed. Funny thing is that when you're younger you build up these wild, exaggerated ideas regarding what these past players were like, and how much better they must've all been than the current day equivalents. You start thinking that they must've shat on all opposition every single time they took to a football pitch, mostly due to the way people discussed them and because you never heard anything about their poorer performances.

Messi, though...he actually is sort of like that. He's probably the only player I've ever seen since starting to watch football that's going to properly live up to the awed whispers and nostalgic storytelling that's going to happen once his career finishes. When the children of the future are told about this little Argentine who broke every goalscoring going whilst winning scores of trophies and individual awards, the things they will think about what he must've been like won't really be that far off the mark.

I scarcely believe Tevez will ever play for Argentina again

Remind me what happened? I remember something or other but can't remember what.

There's no money in playing for your national team though.

Soo many reasons to choose from really but I suppose the tipping point was the friendly he pulled out of, citing an injury then somehow suiting up for City. The AFA finally let it sink in that commitment and Tevez simply do not go together.

Carlitos would have to recapture some phenomenal form at this point to even be considered by Sabella. I don't think he has a prayer to suit up for Albicelestes again

I wouldn't rule out the possibility of the Argies "suiting up" Carlitos. They're desperate for a World Cup win (in Brasil) and they know they've got the talent to get it done. Carlitos has been quiet recently and we all know what he can do, even coming off the bench. He's dangerous because he's not conventional -- he digs in for every scrap and has the ability to turn that scrap into a goal.

I can't even imagine there hysteria here (on the caf) and throughout the world if the Argies meet the English in a knockout game. Imagine a semifinal between these two.

From Marca

It has been brought to the knowledge of MARCA that the Real Madrid squad is "quite angry" with Leo Messi in relation to the player’s behaviour both on and off the pitch. Incidents in Wednesday night’s 'El Clásico' clash proved to be the last straw for Xabi Alonso, who reproached the Argentine star on the field at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium on several occasions.

However, the matter did not end on the field of play. Spanish website Punto Pelota revealed – which can be confirmed by MARCA – that the four-time Ballon d'Or winner went to the players’ car park in the Bernabéu in search of Álvaro Arbeloa after the game. Messi launched a tirade of insults at the Real defender – calling him "stupid", to name but one – leaving the full-back completely shocked. Arbeloa’s wife, Carlota – who is expecting a baby – was with the Spain international and was also astonished: "What’s his problem?" she asked her husband, according to witnesses at the scene. A Barcelona member of staff had to be called to take Messi to the team coach.

La Sexta television and La Cope radio also reported another incident involving the Barça goal-machine and another member of the Real setup - Aitor Karanka, which occurred in the tunnel to the changing rooms. The player is believed to have said to the Madrid assistant coach: "What are you looking at? Shut up. You’re just Mourinho’s puppet".
