Lionel Messi

Defender should've "stuck that into row Z" to use English football parlance.

Further evidence he wouldn't make it on a wet Wednesday in the Britannia. Shawcross or Wilkinson would've sent that out of the ground.

It's awful awful play from the defender.

I'm not disputing that, but he didn't "give" the ball away, and to be fair Messi reacted very quickly to it, his anticipation for knowing when to intercept or steal a ball is quite remarkable for a forward player.

Kaka left him for dead in the clip above, great player in his prime.

Indeed Kaká had some serious pace in his heyday, but it should be mentioned that in that clip he had just come on as a sub whilst Messi had been playing for 88 minutes by then.

What a pass! Like Anderson's, but even tighter and perfectly weighted. Too bad it was wasted by Alexis.

That's just incredible. It's amazing that just a single player can lay more than a valid claim to being the best on the planet in some many different attributes. Finishing, movement, touch, dribbling and passing...

Oh right, thanks for the context.

?? He had a miscontrol and Messi stole the ball away, like he does often.

You can call it that, but at any and all levels I've ever played football (and that's nowhere close to the same universe as La Liga) that would be called giving the ball away. It's fine to give Messi some credit for being alert and snapping it up, but how anyone can see that as anything but a neatly wrapped gift is beyond me.

haters will hate

I agree, this is my favourite ever clip of the boy.

ho ho ho, there's something sick in me that absolutely adores seeing the best footballer in the World for once being made a fool of, some of his own medicine if you will. We're a sick race us human beings, well I am!

:p

and this one

last seconds of the game against brazil, it was tied 0-0

But, but... If you look closely at 0:22 you'll see that it was a gift from the Brazillian midfielder. Awful awful from him, and how anyone can see that as anything but a neatly wrapped gift is beyond me.

So doesn't count.

i know! every time messi scores is not because he is a good player, it's because the brazilian/german/real madrid/manchester united/milan/arsenal/uruguay defenders are giving him presents

he is so cute! you just want to let him score

what will these haters tell to their grand kids? that they hated messi and instead of enjoying him they looked out for excuses to explain his goals?

their grand kids will think "I hope that is not in the genes"

while i know what you guys are saying about trying to nit pick defences to take credit away from the attacker. That really was horrible defending last night, you can't screw around going back towards your own goal with him breathing right down your neck

The defender right outside the box has the ball but then randomly decides to just give it to Messi?! Very strange behaviour for a footballer, he could be on the take.

That was extremely poor defending. It's more to do with the defender's stupidity than Messi's persistence in this case

Exactly.

Yet again its being proven that you can't say anything negative about Messi, or even the defence he faces, without people resorting to absurdities.

You say the defender made a mistake. I agree with you..

You say the defender "gave" the ball to Messi, I think you're talking bullsh*t.

I hope that clears it up..

The 'mistake' was 'giving' the ball away to Messi.

Hope that helps.

Did you see how quick Messi was? The defender didn't even have time to touch the ball! The defender thought: "Well, Messi might be the best dribbler in the world, but he isn't the best tackler in the world for sure. I think I can protect the ball with my body and maintain possession".

He was wrong, as Messi showed great quickness and tackling ability, keeping his eyes on the ball, and dispossessing him without fouling..

And then he scored..

The defender made a mistake in judgement, but Messi had to work hard to get the ball off him..

Nope. Messi's goal against Malaga in the league WAS a gift given to him. His goal against Malaga in Copa del Rey wasn't.

I hope you can see the difference.

Nah, didn't see his goal vs Malaga in the league. It probably was more of a gift, but so was the one above.

Fair play on him for capitalising, he had work to do before and after the mistake, but without that schoolboy defending it wouldn't have been a goal. And it was schoolboy.

Its ok to point that out, it doesn't reflect some agenda against Messi. Considering the quality of his goals usually I think it was to be expected that someone would point to the horrendous defending.

Sometimes it is ok to admit that on this occasion Messi capitalized on shit defending, why don't you people understand that? It doesnt take anything away from him so I never understand this.

let's not make an argument about this, it was a defense mistake and messi hability that ended in that goal

the thing is that redlars, i'm always right, barros and fineh can't get into this thread unless they come to say something very stupid

well, to be fair, barros's stupidity spreads all over the caf. you should read him in the current events forum

Ok, fair enough then.

Agenda posting really is a problem on here and I understand it's difficult sometimes not to get involved in rather pointless discussions in response to some of them.

 I thought I made the point clear with:

You say the defender made a mistake. I agree with you..

You say the defender "gave" the ball to Messi, I think you're talking bullsh*t.

Besides, we have evidence!

ho ho ho, there's something sick in me that absolutely adores seeing the best footballer in the World for once being made a fool of, some of his own medicine if you will. We're a sick race us human beings, well I am!

Tbh, That was shit defending. We can all agree to do that. Good on Messi for closing him down, and that's what some are saying.
Only on the caf would this turn into an argument!

If a United defender did that - the caf would be pissed as hell.
If a United forward scored that - the caf would be rejoicing and praising his tenacity/closing down etc.

So its easy to see why Messi lovers are drooling and Messi haters are pointing out the defending.

I don't care either way - just pointing out its kind of a dumb point to debate over!

Eh? Where did that come from?

It was poor defending, that's all I said and even you agree so how is that "something stupid"?

comes from here:

I agree, this is my favourite ever clip of the boy.

Nobody was drooling over that goal.

comes from here:

Ah, 1 joke post with white text.

You're too serious when it comes to defending your countryman.

He's easily the best player I've seen since Maradona but you'll notice I'm never in this thread joining in the collective love-in, not cause I don't adore watching Messi and appreciate how lucky we are to witness him, but because I'm a United fan and it's not really my thing to spend my days thinking and lusting about a Barca player.

Then don't post in this thread.
