Lionel Messi

Where were the people who are meant to stop that. Seemed to take them ages to actually get to the guy. I had to laugh at Messi having to wipe his face and head after it.

Makes me very nervous everytime someone runs out onto the pitch. Simply too many nutters out there but perhaps that's just the American in me

I can remember someone going on stage to try and say hello to Robbie Williams. I don't think we can count the guy who wanted to have a go at Rio though... That is totally different.

I meant to say other sports. Someone like Sachin Tendulkar would definitely rival Messi's adoration level from his fans.

I would just hate to see a Monica Seles incident, they need to clamp down on this shit, in fact i'd advise players just to quickly get to safety instead of playing it cool especially the likes of Messi/Ronaldo.

Or Lennon in NYC. Problem is the world is obviously filled with nutters and you can't ensure safety everywhere but you'd think the pitch would be at least one place

Yep, for all Messi knows, that could have been Cal? running up to him like that.

Let's be honest, that was Cal?. Some believe he did a prayer after kissing Leo, I think Cal? was trying to curse him with some voodoo

I would guess there would be many such sportsman. The likes of Michael Jordan, Roger Federer must be having/have had crazy support too. And those are just from recent times.

There used to be some great clips of the 1-2s and tricks between Leo & Ibra, but can't find them anymore

Ever heard of Sachin Tendulkar?

Yes, but can you imagine if it was Donald Bradman, the worlds greatest of all time? A near-perfect score for centuries scored. Whilst Sachin had an average of 52 for tests in 194 games, Bradders was near a perfect 100. He scored 7,000 runs. That is to say, if he carried on, he would have most likely got the same number of runs as Sachin but in about 100 tests.

Edit:

On-topic, adulation is one thing, obsession is another and there will be a time when a star of some sorts will be in danger as one poster alluded to earlier about Monica Seles.

How is Bradman even related to this discussion? You asked if there was any athlete/sportsman ever adored like Messi. People rightly quoted Tendulkar at you, because the adoration meted out to him by his fans, clearly rival Messi. What are you trying to achieve here by quoting Bradman's stats? Proving he would have scored more than Tendulkar?

Please tell me you are not hurt by Tendulkar getting as much admiration as Messi does? :D

Adulation for Sachin is not as much widespread as for Messi but based on sheer numbers, I don't think anyone can match the reverence that Sachin commands.

There are people who will kill or die for Sachin.

From Sachin's wiki page: "As per reports by many Indian newspapers, a person hanged himself being distressed over Sachin's failure to reach 100th century."

Holy moly.

Bradman was famous and loved by nearly every cricketing fan around the world. However, since he was a private person, he would have reacted differently to what Messi had done. Messi seems to accept them whilst the likes of Bradman, was very wary of those who wanted to show their adulation for the goat. It is normal I suppose, since he was the Pele of the cricketing world.

That would be simply because of the fact that more people and countries are follow football than cricket.

However, if you take the percentage of the support that goes to the likes of Sachin and Bradman, I think it would be more than Messi simply because there are still a group out there (read Cal?) who don't accept him in the same bracket as Maradona or Pele while Sachin is widely accepted in the bracket of the best of all time. Moreover, Sachin also has plenty of all time records to his name.

The fact that people kill themselves for Sachin is shameful, but that is India for you. This man has carried a sport that is religion in the country for the last 20 years and has had the burden of over a billion hopes on him, and people give it back in the way of their unconditional support, which tends to make them go to insane lengths at times. This is a sport for which offices and schools were shut down, when India was playing Pakistan in the World Cup semi final in 2011, and that really shows the support at every level.

How's that related to Tendulkar or anyone?

Weird turn this thread has taken. Anyway I think many sportsman have had obsession from fans the way messi has. In India I think more people would know who Federer is than Messi, because football has so many teams and players whereas tennis has just a few big names everyone hears about. But like I said, I'm sure maradona, Jordan, Ali, tendulkar have all had the same.

You are right, it has no relevance to this thread. And I will not post anything like it. Since mentioning Sachin or Bradman in a thread about Messi is totally irrelevant to the thread in question.

Well what the feck is wrong with you?
Donaldo gave a good example. You somehow tried to compare him to Bradman and started going on about his personality traits!

For the sheer number of fans, I can imagine Michael Jordan was up there. Even I wasn't a basketball fan, I watched the games just to see him play.
