Lionel Messi

Barcelona just describing it as bruised, but say he's off for a scan and further tests.

He came back quickly from what looked like a bad one from Ujfalusi's tackle. Aside from that he's had an exceptionally good run and it's a far cry from the hamstring strains that punctuated his rise to the top.

He didn't start a game, they introduced him later.

Well, stupid of him and Barca to play him just in trying to get him to break the record.

He plays all the time anyway over the last few years, nothing to do with the record. Messi wants to play all the time and i think thats refreshing and should be applauded.

The footballing world crosses its fingers for a speedy recovery for the greatest player ever.

What? Who wouldn't want to play every minute of every game? That is a silly statement, why should it be applauded? He should be applauded for giving him joy and producing moments of brilliance, not for wanting to play all the time.

Sorry, i meant Barca should be applauded for playing him all the time and not wrapping him in cotton wool.

Not even sure if you are serious with this post. Its almost so over the top I think you are wumming.

don't sweat it, brosstan hates messi, he can't stand if someone praises him

Bross makes a good point though. The vast majority of players would play every game if they were good enough. The poster was being a little unnecessarily effuse.

From tonight's game:

Surely that trumps the Maradona picture with those Belgian players?

edit: found a gif of it, too

And all his team mates just standing around there not anticipating his pass, lol!

Yeah, I noticed that during the game. Amazing, they were trying to build a wall between him and goal during that play.

fecking Tito. There was no need to play Messi tonight, he had plenty of games to break that record (well 2 or three but he is Messi).

I hope that he'll come back as soon as possible and smash that record.

To be fair, no one can predict when, where or how an Injury could happen. What if he picked up one in training? which is a very plausible scenario by the way as we've seen numerous times over the years.

incredible.

Tito on playing Messi against Benfica:

Vilanova also noted that he doesn’t regret sending in Messi against Benfica. “We talked about the possibility of him playing for 30 minutes. He’s a player that likes to play ... he’s not focused on breaking the record that everyone is talking about, if that were the case he would have played against Alavés and the full 90 minutes tonight. Playing is part of his physical training.” He added: “We should sub him out every time we’re leading 3-0 lest he picks up an injury. We’ve never behaved this way. If I had a do-over I’d make the same decision seeing that he can get injured at any moment.”

Don't care about records.. Just make sure he's ready to play against us at Wembley.. I want to beat them full strength..

Twitter is already saying he's left the hospital and could play on the weekend.

Not really. That injury had nothing to do with other players. He injured himself kicking the ball. Could just as easily happen in training.

That is if the injury wasn't directly related to overuse. Then you'd be sort of right.

Ronaldo has a nagging injury. Would not surprised if Messi picks one up as well that he too will use the summer to take care off. They play so god damn much.

He was injured because he collided with the Benfica keeper.

I still find it kind of amazing he didn't go down considering how that guy landed on his leg which he was standing on atm.

90% of the players would have probably gone for the penalty but Messi tried to play on and score the goal and only realized how much his knee hurt once he had taken the shot and put his weight again on the injured leg.

Players get injured in injured in training all the time. Rooney got injured after training by falling over a practice net. A Reading player got injured getting out of bed.

In any case he's not even injured - just a bit of a knock as SAF would say. It just looked worse because he was in obvious pain and ended up on a stretcher.

 Pele's sick?

The best bit about that picture is that the entire Benfica 11 are in it - I know there are only 9 outfield players in it, but the missing player is just out of shot, and can be seen in one of the previously posted pictures.

How did Barca not manage to score when there were 10 men marking Messi alone?

Yes, but you should not play the best player of all time in a stupid meaningless match, especially when that player usually plays 60+ games in a year. If you do that you're asking for trouble.
