like Lance Armstrong after hes retired the truth about Barca and Messi blood doping will be exposed!!!

Yes, but you should not play the best player of all time in a stupid meaningless match, especially when that player usually plays 60+ games in a year. If you do that you're asking for trouble.

I'm not so sure about that.

If Messi wants to beat that record, and they felt there was a good chance he could score in that game, then he had to play a little. I can't see anyone wanting to gamble with Messi's motivation. It's more beneficial to Barcelona to keep him motivated and happy in the long run. Risk vs reward and all that.

It may seem an odd way to think but he's that special.

I was wondering if you're worth replying to, so I checked your posts in this thread, and I found a lot of brilliant posts.. On the top of the pack is this:

Nevermind.

When was that written? Hopefully for his sanity, it wasn't after 2007-08 or something like that. Though there's something about his profile that tells me this isn't the case.

Also, the score was 0-0 and Benfica should have been 2-3 goals up by that point. Barca was struggling. Made sense to put on Messi. Nou Camp isn't used to not winning and despite it being a meaningless match I don't think none of the players or manager wanted to lose this. Wouldn't be surprised that Messi wanted to come on for that reason.

I have a feeling even if Barcelona were leading Messi would have still played the last 30 minutes, because they've always done this.. Against Osasuna in the Copa del Rey last year Barcelona were comfortably ahead in both legs, but Messi still played the last 30 minutes of both games..

Yea. Probably because he'd get agitated and they know it. He wants to play. Who are they to deny him that.

There was a stage in early 2010 when Rooney had a better goals for game ratio (only marginally of course) than Messi did over the season, a little before his injury. At the time I also thought Rooney in that form (the peak of his powers) was a more valuable player to have in the team than Messi (who was still close to on par with Rooney's form when he had a whole new level to reach as we now know) and as such obviously that statement is now untrue.

But there was a small window in early 2010 where the argument could've been made that Rooney was ever so slightly in better form than Messi.

Obviously not now though, or ever again.

What if Rooney scores 5 goals in the next 5 games, while Messi scores only 4??

Are you telling me that there is a moment in 2010 where you honestly would have picked Rooney over Messi if you were offered both players??

It has never been a comparison between Messi and Rooney IMO, as much as I love Rooney.. And it's never a good idea to base your opinion on a small window.

Besides, look how he described the way Messi plays.. Not a fan of Messi, is he?

Great job that did for them last year when he died in the arse by seasons end.
Score all the goals you want, but if it comes down to personal accolades over club trophies, they both need to take a look at themselves.

All that says to me is that Messi is bigger than Barcelona and they freely accept that. Sorry but with a club the size of Barcelona and the players they've had in their past, no player is bigger than their club. No matter how good they are.

Er... Thanks for the no response Daniel, that post was written in 2010, when Rooney had a storming year and there was a period in that year when he was seriously challenging to be one of the top performers of the year. .

Would I make a statement like that now? No, but good job in going back a couple of years. This is a Manchester United forum and I'm a Man Utd fan, what do you expect then? I can live with a bit of red tinted glass. What I'm not though is a Barcelona fan, who also supports Manchester United.

Welcome back Freud, the world has missed you much.

That's your problem Daniel. You see everybody in the world as either a fan of Messi, or against it. I don't care about it either, so I post very rarely in this thread.

I found it funny that you told some poster to go back and check his twitter feed and YOU were sure that HE/SHE must have received only one message and he should re-check, and then promptly told that you were not making any assumptions.

Well now that you've been trawling through posts that were more than two years old, I wouldn't put it past you to go through his twitter timeline to count the messages. :nervous:

Eh? The only reason they managed to get back on Real Madrid's tail in La Liga was because of Messi's form after Christmas last year. If you mean he missed a penalty against Chelsea - yes, he did. He also missed one in October of that season against Sevilla. It happens.

If you want to take issue with Barcelona's handling of Messi then it would have to be over the way they've shaped the team to fit him, but like any other tactical choice it's only a mistake when it stops working.

Well the way I see it, they won so far 3 La Liga titles, 2 champions league trophies and many other trophies on his back in the last 4 years. I'd say that's a great job.

They've never had a player as good as Messi at Barca. You cannot treat like he is another "normal" player, he is among the best ever to have played football.
He could be shouting "I'm da numero uno bitches !!!" that no one would object to it

What exactly went wrong for them last year? Certainly wasn't Messi's fault, it was down the squad not being strong enough and indifferent form from many other players, he was carrying that team for much of last season. If anything the reason they were even within 5 points of R.Madrid was down to Messi. In the CL it was Messi's goal that played a huge part in them getting to the semis and against Chelsea he missed a penalty and weren't far from going through there either.

Messi has a unique opportunity here to beat a record that I think many thought in this current age could not be toppled so they will support their player is doing so, nothing to do with him being bigger than the club.

Indeed, the fact that Messi was all alone to score the necessary goals needed to keep them up there is credit to Messi alone. Real Madrid not only had Ronaldo, they had Higuain and Benzema who scored 20+ goals a piece. Who did Messi have to help him? If Barcelona had Villa, I am not sure that Real Madrid would have won la liga to be honest.

Villa's injury was a blessing in disguise for them. He had been doing a lot of nothing. What hurt Barca last season were Pedro and Puyol's injury problems.

And the record is broken.

What should little Leo do to convince the world that he is the greatest player ever?

Unbelievable achievement, I wonder how many he will get this season.

Seen some crazy stat saying that in every game he has scored in this season, he has scored at least two goals in those games.

Win the World Cup. Rightly or wrongly, it is the only way that he will become the best player of all time IMO.

He already is the greatest imo but if there are any doubters then he probably needs to win a world cup. He should do it in Brazil and then smile as Pele watches on in anger.

At 25, when he reaches 30 I don't think there will be any dispute on him being the greatest ever.

For me he already is.

For me too. I can't imagine anyone else surpassing the level he's showing.

Personally I think that this is a wrong approach. He had done many things that Pele/Maradona didn't. Anyway, for the sake of argument (and because I support Argentina) I hope that he will win the World Cup.

Carry on as he is. He is only 25, so there is at least another 5 years of this.

Yes, hopefully in that time (and hopefully he has more than 5 years to show his magic) he will convince even his haters that he's the best ever. But for me, even if he retires today, he is the best player of all time.
