Messi and Müller have been compared a lot recently but here's another comparison where it's all nicely summed up. Some factual errors in there like expected from this kind of summary but few that jump at you.

its really hard to tell where it would have ended up but I t hought it was an own goal.

Funny though that the only ones not awarding it are Marca, the pro madrid paper who gave Ronaldo one of Pepe's goals a while back

Messi's shot was definitely going into the corner, because the defender was there and failed to clear it does not mean it shouldnt count. If he wasnt there it was a goal.

WAS GOAL

thought it was heading for the post myself, maybe the spin on the ball would have carried it in? But yeah, Marca award the pichichi, which is why it isn't a shock they'll help Ronaldo out with dubious goals but not Messi

Cal will say it was Ronaldo who scored that goal.

If it was going in then it's Messi's goal without any discussion. It's like one of the goals he scored against Santos in the World Club Cup final (against Santos), and like the second goal he scored against Madrid a few seasons back (in a 2-0 win, Cannavaro was the one who blasted it in), as long as the ball was going in it's Messi's goal..

I've looked at it many times, especially from the angle behind the goal, it looks to me like it was going in to be honest, and what makes sure of that IMO is the spin Messi had on the ball, but that could still be debatable.. I can see them differ on this one, especially Marca.

The view at 25sec mark shows it the best.
Why didn't he just shoot to begin with?

I don't think you can definitely say it's going in.

Sometimes I think he gets bored, he frequently goes for little chips and dinks when you'd think he'd be better just lashing it first time.

Probably not going in, although the spin on the ball would have brought it closer to the goal. I'd have said it's a bit harsh on the defender crediting him with an own goal had he not made such an arse of the clearance and the offside trap.

It's an own goal all day long to be fair, so he's on 84, right?

No, that's true. It's definitely debatable.. But I think the advantage should be given to the attacker anyway in this case if there is no decisive evidence.. Not sure though..

Anyway, the ref has given it to Messi during the game, and now the FIFA official website also gave it to Messi..

Imagine Cal's reaction if Messi ends up beating Muller's record by one goal.. We'll never hear the end of it..

He's already found a way to deny that record by saying that he's only going to beat it because he's played more games, Messi will always be about as good as Joe Cole and Etherington to him.

Liga de Fútbol Profesional, the governing body of Spanish top division, claims that during the 2010–11 La Liga season Cristiano Ronaldo scored a total of 40 goals,[1] while Marca newspaper, which is responsible for the Pichichi trophy, claims that he in fact scored a total of 41 goals.[2] The inconsistency of the data started during a match between Real Sociedad and Real Madrid, played on 18 September 2010, after Ronaldo took a free kick with a powerful shot towards the goal when in mid-air the ball was deflected on Pepe's back, beating the goalkeeper.[1] The view of Liga de Fútbol Profesional is backed by the Royal Spanish Football Federation and UEFA.[3] In addition, the 40 goals mark is also backed by his own club.[4] In 2011, Ronaldo received a European Golden Shoe award for his “40 strikes in La Liga” season and established the award's new point record at 80.[3][4]

LFP, RFEF, UEFA, FIFA, referee's report > Marca

I would give it as an own-goal too actually, but whatever LFP decide should count in the end. So Messi at 84, then. Or if they revise, 83.

It's only a match report from FIFA. It will probably be review by the La Liga goal committee or whatever they had. Won't matter in the end. He'll beat it by at least a couple of goals, this one not included.

I'm sure Amorebieta will testify and agree with the ref.

Knew he wouldn't finish off the record, I bet he still will. Poor sod, even if you hate him you have to admit his talent. Deserved it, would have been good for football all round I guess. Is it that serious?

unconfirmed reports saying its not serious, but whats not serious? could still be a couple of weeks to end his year in 2012

How on earth could you hate Messi? It would take an obscene fecktard to try to deny his talent.

On the plus side, if it is bad, our chances of winning the CL goes up considerably.

Why is it so hard to believe people don't like him? Even if you do obv you can't deny his talent. And yeah I guess you're right in that sense. How long do you reckon he's out for?

Not denying his talent does not equate to liking him.

He will be back very soon. He is like Jesus: walks on water, scores 5000 goals and come back from the dead, worry not.
