Casillas could have done better but I'm not sure that it would have been good enough. Some free kicks you don't save. Simple as that. I've said as much earlier in this thread. Casillas positioned himself in the exact same way later in the game when Messi got another free kick in a similar place. He was playing a numbers game. Chances are Messi won't hit the ball so well over the wall so it's better to be safe than sorry and keep most of the goal 100% locked up.

You lot are just envious that you aren't més que un poster.

I think the criticism of Casillas is harsh. Some of it is pretty reasonable of course, saying he could have been faster, but other is just over the top (I think someone mentioned him saving it 100/100 times). It was a good, hard and accurate kick, with an obstructed view. Doesn't mean it was the best freekick of all time, but if you hold keepers (or just Casillas) to a standard of flawlessness, then I think you can't help but be disappointed.

Just read through his posts. Its not about him arguing Messi's corner. Its the belittling rhetoric, constant use of words like "preposterous", "ludicrous", "ridiculous" and dumb smilies like "" and ":wenger:" when he quotes anyone who dares question that Barcelona and Messi are brilliant and perfect in every way.

If anyone else does the same with the same consistencty when arguing about United, then yes, they are condescending twats, but I dont feel theres many on here like that.

I have definitely seen more "childish posts" of the kind you described from other posters in the last two pages.

Among fans of other clubs I definitely think he's one of the most decent guys we have here.

See  so pathetic. There are a handful of players who have the power to do that frequently, it's not a slight on Messi. Also comparing a moving ball to a set piece? Really?

He generated the power there from the type of shot not just from the fact that it was moving. Messi 'whips' the ball, meaning he's also using a flicking motion of the foot when he strikes to generate pure speed. Different from striking the ball with a rigid foot.

Get in your back garden and try it ... you'll be amazed at the difference in speed of the two shots.:D

Craig Gordon would've saved it.

No, but I suspect he would have got closer because he's longer than Casillas. Funny you should bring him up because I was just about to post this but got distracted by the kids eating their tea.

It was in relation to my earlier post about power free-kicks and distance, being able to see the ball as it comes off the foot. Anyway, I'm not sure the keeper on this occasion :D had any idea about the power that RvP can generate ... he, the keep was quite new to the EPL then. Its the only FK I can recall (tho I have a poor memory for games generally) that has beaten a keeper who was relatively well sighted and shot right at him.

It really is a stunning FK.

It's a good point because when you get close to the edge of the box, the mini-penalty scenario is more pertinent. For another example, look at this one below:

The difference for me is distance: Messi's free-kick (from 27 yards) is not really comparable to Basler's (from 19-20 yards) or Rivaldo's (from 22 yards).

 at Alonso.

Been fouling (trying in this case) skillful forwards running past him since 2004. Knob.

He's using the whipping motion to get the ball up and down, more of that work applied to the ball is used getting the ball to spin rather than a straight increase in velocity. Theres no way in hell Messi's strike is as quick as the Ronaldo one, Ronaldo's "knuckle balls" can reach 35m per second ffs. Messi doesn't need to hit freekicks that hard, but then he makes up for the (relative) lack of power with improved accuracy.

Not really comparing their shots (in terms of speed), I'm just commenting on the goal Messi scored vs Brazil, that I thought it had tremendous velocity because he whipped it into the top corner (caught it perfectly as opposed to rigidly smacking across the ball) - very difficult to do in that corner for a left footer.

And then comparing it to the FK vs Casillas which was slightly differently struck ( I think) and still had a lot of speed. Van Persie's was pure blistering power.

Ronaldo probably has one of the fastest/hardest shots in the game today I would think.

Not really arguing any particular point , rather just making a comment, albeit probably poorly.

How did that shower of shite win the Champions league..

It looks like he has suddenly decided that he want to be the world's best in freekicks aswell.

according to the argie pundits, messi knew that his freekicks werent that good, so from a couple of years now, after training he stays in the field practicing free kicks

Brilliant. Lovely to hear this kind of ethic from the world's best player.

I read somewhere that Argentina's manager has been now playing him in the position in which he plays for Barcelona, is that true Marcos?

well, he is certainly playing more in his usual position that he did when maradona and batista where argentina coaches

He's still coming deep to collect the ball at times but Argentina's midfield was finally superior for once, great games by Gago and Mascherano.

Hmm. how to downplay this one?
It's not like he has anything else to focus on at practice.

Do we think he'll catch Batistuta's goal records for Argentina?

If he maintains fitness and motivation through his late-20s then it's quite likely. After all, he's already played 70 games for Argentina where Batigol played 78 in his entire career (and even he's the most capped striker in their history). So it's quite feasible Messi will end up with 120-140 games under his belt, which should give him sufficient opportunity to get to 60-80 international goals.

Just saw this on goal.com about the game against Uruguay:

L. Messi:
Went close on a couple of occasions, and found himself in the right place at the right time to finally open up the scoring
 WTF!
