Don't remember him being very good in 06. Scored a pen I think, but Portugal were fairly toothless in that tournament.

Despite his goal output, he was the best young player at the tournament. Should have won the award, if not for Winkgate. Selective memory there.

He was though.

I would know. I have every WC 2006 game on my Laptop and rewatched a lot of the games recently to get ready for the upcoming Euros. Ribery's performances against Spain and Brazil blew away anything Ronaldo did in the whole tournament by a country mile for instance. The only thing Ronaldo did was to pull ridiculous flicks, rabonas (against Netherlands for example, killing a meaningful counterattack), 50 yard shots and get Rooney sent off.

It's not an exaggeration to say that for Portugal Rony has never reached the heights he had with us or Madrid at all.

When he played for his clubs he has been the most dominant players for years now which he never was for Portugal.

I said young player.

Ribery was only just 23 in 2006. Don't know if that's young enough for this discussion, but he was just about making his mark then really. I was dying for us to sign him.

Some examples of Ronaldo's game from 2010 when he is actually far more mature than in 2006:

2:02: meaningless backheel flick
2:15: attempting to shoot from like 50 yards
2:52: shooting directly at goal from a 50 yard freekick into row Z
3:59: another wasteful attempt from like 40 yards
4:08: another wastefull attempt from like 50 yards
5:40: guess from which distance he's trying to beat the best keeper of 2010 ...

And so on. Not a single meaningful pass or chance he creates for his teammates or for himself. ANYTHING where you would say: "Wow, what a player." And that's how I've always seen him play football (at least on the big stage where I've watched him very closely). As Manchester United fans you guys should remember the 2009 CL final for example ... Carbon copy of that Brazil game. In that sense, I've never been impressed by Ronaldo's overall game. I accept that he's world class in finishing chances others create for him but boy is he mediocre in creating his own chances and creating chances for his teammates. In the upcoming Euros there will be at least 20 better individual performers than him and it won't come as a surprise.

I stand corrected then.

He (Ronaldo) was one of the bright young stars of the tournament. Does Homeomorphic have all the Portugal games on his laptop?

Sure. Some games are even on YouTube in good quality. Portugal - France semi-final, there you go:

I can't view flash videos at work, I'll comment on them later. As for the bolded part, wow.

How difficult is it to talk about Messi in the Messi thread and Ronaldo in the Ronaldo thread, seriously?

 Ronaldo videos in the Messi thread, really?

Messi was outstanding vs Ecuador btw. Tore them apart countless times.

Three cheers for the supposed bestest player ever ever having a good games against the might of ... err... Ecuador... :nervous:

Being not nice to defenders since 1993:

That last goal is so much like the current Messi it's hilarious. It's basically what he's done 100 times in his professional career already. His trademark - the drops of the shoulder and subtle accelerations coming in from the right, and the finish into the left of the goal past the keeper.

Cal really needs to just make a Ronaldo thread and be done with coming in here.

I haven't mentioned "you-know-who" in this thread for a long long time, if you look through the last 2-3 pages, it wasn't me who dragged him into the conversation. :nono:

Also, this is just a Lionel Messi thread, surely one is allowed to criticize him in such a thread? If you lot want a thread where one is only allowed to worship him, it should say so in the thread title.

If we were playing fantasy draft again, and if you had the option to chose a player apart from Ronaldo as your first pick who would you pick?

Would it be Messi?or someone else?

Definitely, I think Messi is a great player (for Barca at least) and certainly up there with the best, just don't agree that he's the bestest player ever ever like many people do.

Tee hee hee.

"Apart from our own [players] I preferred Messi. Each game he played he made 20 chances to score, he is a phenomenon.

We would have liked it to have been one of us. Messi deserves the Golden Ball more than Forlan."

Vincente del Bosque (2x Champions League winner, World Cup winner and above all: a Madridista) about the 2010 World Cup.

Yeah, I thought Messi had some really good performances for Argentina in that World Cup. Not his fault that Maradona is a complete retard.

And? Individual opinions are not always right no matter who they come from. Fergie maintained for a long time that Ronaldo was better even though Messi had already widened that gap.

For me, Messi was good in 2010 WC only if you consider him a bog standard player. Otherwise he did not even deserve to be in WC XI let alone be awarded the golden ball.

Of course they aren't. But allow me to trust one of the highest profile managers in world football judging a player's performances over some random dude's judgement on Redcafe.

Fergie maintained Ronaldo was better because Ronaldo was his player. Shocker. Del Bosque has no affiliation to Messi at all. In fact he's a proper Madridista. Played for Real Madrid for 14 years. Then coached their youth teams for 5 years. Then coached their first team for 6 years. His Madrid bias is even apparent in his current Spain team selection. He has no reason to be an irrational Messi fan boy.

Fergie maintained that for some time even after Ron left. Del Bosque is very much a La Liga man and Messi's performances there will always cloud his judgement. Messi was above average at best in last WC, any attempt to push that above is very tedious and shows that his fanbois has some chip on their shoulder5 when they shouldn't. If he does not produce his best for Argies, then he does not, you can't do anything about that.
