Lionel Messi

Forget that they should have conceded twice early doors at SB v Napoli to put them 5-1 down in the tie. Cavani with a horrendous miss and Lavezzi (I think).

I don't get it... Hernandez's movement is exceptional, and Messi's is of a similar standard. Hernandez probably would not be a footballer at all if he wasn't so good in this aspect.

I don't mean they are carbon copies of each other in terms of their movement, just that Messi's predatory instincts and movement in the box are of a similarly high standard.

Aside from the fact that Mr H often appears to have been born offside do you not see the sheer ludicrousness of comparing any facet of his very limited game to Messi's? I mean Walcott is faster...

Hernandez's movement is amazing - it's no sleight on Messi to say his movement is of a similar standard. Like I say, Hernandez would be serving fajitas in Guadalajara if he wasn't capable of twisting defenders brains out with his movement. *Stop being a pedantic old arsehole.

Not necessarily true, but you know what I mean.

 It is quite frankly remarkable that a man who scored 73 goals, missed so many chances against Chelsea. That, and the 100 other chances that Barca had, and missed, is ridiculous. How did Chelsea get through? :wenger:

I just don't know where he can go from here. He is obviously young enough to get better but....how?

According to Fergie he's not in his prime yet.

SAF said:
"Players develop and start to mature when they reach 25 or so. We’ve seen that with Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and others. But Messi has not even reached that age yet. It’s frightening what’s going to happen – he’s only 24!"

His all around game will get better. His passing. His decision making. His temper. It doesn't need to reflect in goal statistics. He might score 50 instead of 73 goals and become a better player nevertheless. The older he gets, the deeper he will play. His optimal position would actually be that of a true #10 with a centreforward infront of him. He's as much of a creator as he is a finisher. He's already effectively playing as a midfielder most of the time. Once Xavi steps back in a few seasons, he'll take even more responsibilities in dictating the game. And Argentina will also profit from that development.

I expect the upcoming season to be his best ever. For the first time Messi will get a long rest. No Olympics, no World Cup, no Copa America. Just a long summer break for him. Plus the hunger to regain the La Liga and CL titles.

Two words 'wood', 'trees'.

The German Bundesliga players have chosen Messi as the world's best player this season #fcblive Messi 73.4%, Ronaldo 17.8, Ozil 2.9 [kicker]

Are you absolutely retarded or something? You need watch Hernandez only a few times to see that is movement is absolutely top class; you seem unable to get your head round the fact that someone with such limited ability on the ball could be so good off it as a forward. We would've come nowhere near winning the league the season before last without him.

Again, stop being pedantic. If it makes you any happier I'll say he has the movement of Ronaldo and the positioning and willingness to receive the ball of Scholes. Basically, he's fecking amazing at football.

Excerpts of Frederic Kanouté's interview with FIFA Magazine

Lionel Messi scored 50 league goals in the season just finished. As a forward yourself, how do you rate his performances?
He is not human; he’s from another planet. I’ve played against him several times and he’s incredible – he’s not a normal player. In the same way that there’s Barcelona and the rest of the world, there is also Messi and the rest of the Barça players. He does things that only he is capable of doing. He’s exceptional.

That's interesting about him potentially playing as a #10, I've always thought that the false 9 position Messi plays will remain. He's absolutely unstoppable in that position, I don't think it restricts him either because he drops deep so often.

It never gets boring to watch him.One a kind player, we're all lucky to see him in his prime. There won't be a guy as good as this for a very long time

Hmm. I wonder how many said that about Pele and along comes Cruyff. Then along comes Maradona. Then along comes Van Basten. Then along comes Maldini. Then along comes Ronaldo. Then along comes Zidane. Then along comes CRonaldo. Then along comes Messi.

For all we know, Neymar is the next great thing. Or some 12 year old in Africa. It's the great thing about sport. Records are there to be broken. Superstars are there to be debated worldwide.

Is it more like Ole or Ruud?

There's something wrong with you if you can't see how ridiculous it is to compare Hernandez's movement to Messi's. I think the problem is you've reduced the meaning of movement to Hernandez' jinks and jerks in the box (which, to be fair, he's pretty good at).

There's nothing remarkable about his movement in general, that's a fairy tale. His jinking and jerking in the box, though, is notable (not out of this world). That's how he gets his goals without being much of a footballer.

 What's with the Hernandez comparisons in this thread? Hasn't the lad suffered enough this season?!

Guys please be serious, besides, technically it's forbidden to make comparisons with other players in this thread..

EB100, you need to get your eyes checked. What is exceptional movement to us is a blur to you.

Do you mean the quick little off the ball movements in the box? He's pretty good at that, I've acknowledged. But if you mean anything beyond that, what's so exceptional about his movement that it deserves to be compared to Messi's? You guys are acting like its some sort of fairy-tale you can't really explain, but that is supposed to just be believed.

This is such nit-picking, for feck's sake. I've not reduced the meaning of movement to anything - I was comparing the two based on their predatory instincts on the box (I even went on to clarify by saying he had the off the ball movement and willingness to receive the ball of Scholes, just for clarity), whereby both players are clearly exceptional in this aspect. I've seen enough of Messi to know what he's like as a player - Christ, I watch as many Barcelona games as possible just to see him play. I can't ever remember having wanted another team's player to do so well. He reduces me to some sort of gargling spastic sometimes when he goes on those jinking runs like he did against Bilbao the other day.

How waxing lyrical about Messi has turned into some sort of silly little debate about how Hernandez's movement isn't actually actually that good (when it blatantly is - he wouldn't actually be a footballer if it wasn't), I don't know. Read the following:

I don't mean they are carbon copies of each other in terms of their movement, just that Messi's predatory instincts and movement in the box are of a similarly high standard.

Nothing wrong with that. I don't pretend Hernandez is anywhere near as good as Messi in any other aspect, but what Hernandez is clearly absolutely top drawer at is getting on the end of chances, being in the right place at the right time and just being a pain in the arse in the box. Messi is better in absolutely every single aspect, including movement outside the box, finding space to receive the pass, etc, but that's the point I'm making.

If you were talking about in the box, then my bad man. I thought you had claimed and were defending that Hernandez's movement is as good as Messi's in general.

No problem, I'm in a bad mood. Forgive me.

Perhaps I should've made it clearer in the first post.

Edit: I once heard a statistic that Messi runs the least out of any of the Barcelona players barring Valdes...is this true? Laughable stat if true considering his productivity. Speaks volumes about his off the ball movement in and out the box.

Can't stop laughing. Looks like he's running trough a battlefield, dodging players flying around him left and right.

Someone needs to edit bullets and explosions into that GIF.

Yeah him, he'd be great! Saw him in the 10k thread yesterday, brilliant video.

my point is similar to kingeric's so back off and stop being so nitpicky.

Maradona-Pelé-Messi are in the same bracket for me.The Maldinis, Cristianos, Zidane a level below.
So yeah a player as good as Messi (Maradona and Pelé), it doesn't happen often
