Maradona-Pelé-Messi are in the same bracket for me.The Maldinis, Cristianos, Zidane a level below.
So yeah a player as good as Messi (Maradona and Pelé), it doesn't happen often

I left out Ronaldhino after Zidane-before CRonaldo. He was on another planet for 2-3 years and unjustly robbed of the FIFA award in 2006. Also Henry as well who from 2002-2006 was simply amazing, who should have won the FIFA/Ballon awards in 2004.

Someone had a stat up earlier saying his been directly involved (either scoring or assisting) in 122 (?) goals this season for club and country.

I mean, come on. Any attacking player reaching those sorts of stats over 3-4 seasons could easily be hailed as world class! And this little dwarf has done it in 1 season.

Messi...bloody hell!

73 goals and 29 assists in 60 club apps
+
6 goals and 5 assists in 8 international apps
=
79 goals and 34 assists in 68 apps for club and country (so, 113 goals/assists)

...and a friendly against Brazil still to come in a couple of days, so he could hit 80 goals for the season.

But could he do it on a cold wet winter night at the Britannia? ;)

Of course! I cant help but laugh at the notion that Messi wouldn't rip apart every defence in England. He'd smash up Stoke and everyone else so badly he'd get nicked after the game for vandalism.

i want messi offspring to be a girl who, in time, will mate with aguero's son

can you imagine what a great footballer could be the son of aguero and messi, and grand son of maradona? five goals a game fa p fa p fa p fa p

Insane if that were to happen, marcos

I too am a father to be and I hear all the time how your life changes forever after...Selfishly, I hope it doesn't diminish this genius' game

that wont happen, like it didnt happen to aguero and maradona when they had kids

Maradona was a nutter and Kun isn't the GOAT that Leo is, I think the pressures are different perhaps...Either way, I hope you are right...I keep fearing something is going to derail his ascendency, it defies logic up until now

i know what you mean

every end of season we think he has reached his peak, only to show us wrong the next season

but i seriously think this has been his best and he will never beat it

He looked very motivated last night, I liked that vigor - like he had something to prove...Real joy to watch

Most goals scored in a single UEFA Champions League season: 14 goals
Most La Liga hat-tricks in a season: 8 hat-tricks
Most UEFA Champions League hat-tricks: 3 hat-tricks

feck me, that was one game's worth of highlights? Those poor Ecuador players...

I do get a kick out of seeing training vids with Leo dribbling the Barcelona defense and scoring...He's an equally opportunity footballing assassin

The sooner he really starts to perform for Argentina, the better. I'm sick of that tired argument that he doesn't do it for his country. As soon as he does, I'd like to see what the Messi haters can come up with next.

You mean if he ever starts to perform for Argentina when it matters? :smirk:

Well isn't if funny that the best players in the world always seem to struggle when it comes to playing for their national team?

Maybe if their countries didn't expect them to win tournaments on their own and their coaches actually knew what they were doing this would change but if everything stays like it is neither Messi nor Ronny will ever win a trophy with their national team.

Yer.

Both haven't done it at international level.

He was one of Portugals best players in 2004 and 2006, he hasn't done it since he became a super star granted but he does have previous. It's like saying Rooney has never done it for England, he has, just not in a long time.

Don't remember him being very good in 06. Scored a pen I think, but Portugal were fairly toothless in that tournament.

He was one of the best players at the tournament until he was kicked off the park (literally) by the Dutch, IMO. He was still carrying the injury for the final.

Still remember Alan Hansen saying 'he'd rather play against him than with him', that man talks so much shit.

That's exactly the point I'm getting at it's those unrealistic expectations that those two get burdened with that seems to wear them down.

I have a feeling Portugal will finish last in their group and Nani will score more goals then Rony.

Same with Messi. He was near unstoppable at the 2007 Copa America, awarded young player of the tournament and easily 3rd best player behind Riquelme and Robinho for me. Cristiano wasn't even a sure starter at the 2004 Euros but he claimed his spot with some great performances, the kind you barely see from him nowadays. In 2006 he was decent, but it was all about Figo.

It's not only the pressure they are under since becoming so high-profile, it's because they weren't the main men for their teams back then that they had more freedom, whereas now they are defensively focused on by their opponents. Messi is better equipped to deal with this, because he can act as a playmaker. For Portugal though it's mostly been beneficial to Nani who gets more freedom than Cristiano.

Portugal, solid though they were, lacked an edge in 2006. Just five goals in a group involving Angola, Iran and Mexico, then just one in three knockout matches against Holland, England and France.

That's true. They didn't have the most difficult passage to the semis when you look at it. Would've been embarrassing for them not to get out of a group that contained Iran and Angola, they won a match against Holland marred by sendings off, and beat England on penalties after a 0-0 game. They weren't all that good like you say.
