What I said to my mate. Scythe the motherfecker down and get a yellow, don't just part in his wake

The goal was sublime, mind you.

And how do yiu do that then, when the slippery fecker is past you before you can even react?

These players aren't stupid, and they're hardly a model of fair play either. He's too good to hack down at times

Seen a few people make this comment by the way, a shame that faced with such a talent, that's what they think of!

so you think that real madrid players where stupid because they didn't scythe him, but you find horrendous when barcelona players dive

you know that both actions are against the rules

so why are people so outraged with one violation of the rules, but with the other are not only fine, but encourage it?

Good point marcos.

One thing I must say though is I detest his team. I mean, you shouldn't be cheating when you are that good. That is just wrong.

Agreed.

Too many cheaters everywhere, Busquets makes Deco look like a saint.

For so many years the diving in Spanish football has always stood out for me.

It's sad.

No effort was made to stop him!

I hate thuggery, such as Marcelo's stamp on Pedro, and I hate diving and all that wankery displayed yesterday. But for goodness sakes, put all effort in to get the ball, don't just let him run past you

Don't you think maybe he couldnt be stopped? his close control was outstanding, he has this ability to take a touch before the defender is even set, he did it on each occasion, pushing the ball into an area where they couldnt get near it or him. You take him down there it would be so blatant it'd result in another red card. Worth it?

The player would basically have to make no attempt for the ball and focus solely on kicking him. Red card easily.

It had nada to do with effort. They had no chance. It was either foul him and walk. Or let him score.

Would have been better had he done it against 11 men when Pepe was still on the pitch.

Still, easily the best player in the world, and I hope we can somehow stop him :nervous:

Exactly, and i really doubt anyone was expecting him to do what he did. As the game showed Barca were happy to keep the ball. He didnt have any support and ran straight at the defence. To not agree that the goal was outstanding, to merely say "they should have kicked him" is insulting really.

Of course if it was against your team then you would be crying out for someone to stop him, by any means but imagine it is your team. Does Vidic or Ferdinand or Carrick or whoever just run after Messi, make no attempt for the ball and create a huge dissadvantage for the team by getting sent off for a professional foul? Madness.

Even so don't you think the defenders thought they could get the ball? i didnt see anyone not try and stop him, madrid put in a huge effort in the game. Sometimes you cannot stop a player.

also the arguement that it was against 10 men holds little water. Madrid were not stretched at the time. Messi was one man and he beats 3/4 players, maybe if there were 5 it wouldnt have happend. But to take on all comers in that mannor and finish it in a CL semi final shouldn't be dismissed. To dismiss that is insanity.

I doubt it would have happened with 11 men. Pepe was the man who was keeping him quiet. He goes off and the goal is scored.

I don't think I'm dismissing it at all. It was a lovely goal and not many players could do it. Just saying it would have been an EVEN more special goal had it come earlier.

It was a stunning goal, full stop, I said that myself in this thread and in the matchday thread. "Wow, Messi, Goddamn" were my exact words

I'm just saying

I was watching it with a friend and we were just looking at each other with disbelief.

Complete shock, some things just shouldn't happen in football. It's like playstation on easy settings except this is real life.

One of the touches where he changes direction and runs through the space is like watch old clips of George Best.

Who is going to be the next Lionel Messi?

I did feel a bit sorry for Cassilas though, how many times is he going to watch his defence be made stupid like this.

Can't wait to meet him at Wembley. I honestly think we're a better unit than we were in 09 and I do not fear Barca as much as I did back then for some reason. It's gonna be a cracker!

i tend to agree with you

but i also think that this year we don't have Ronaldo

Aye but for all Ronaldo's genius, the fact that the tea was built around him often worked against us if he wasn't on his game. And he wasn't in 09. This year we are a better team, everyone knows their role, and everyone works for each other. We have a great work ethic, and we know our weaknesses and are able to compensate for them- not to mention the fact we have key players coming back from injury and coming into form at the right time. I don't fear anyone this year, where as in 09 I sort of knew in my gut Barcelona would win.

That said, I have a feeling our key man is going to be Carrick, and whilst he has been great in Europe this year he is not known for always stepping up when he needs to so there is always that fear he might disappear again.

We are more compact though and certainly play more as a team.

People need to remember we have reached the cl final without Ronaldo and are about to win the Prem so although he's a sensational player we don't exactly need him.

The problem while we may be more compact, Barca have also got stronger since 09.

But I relish having Wayne play in the center, it was so painful watching him toil as a fullback at times in 2009 , heck even in 2008.

A cl final has never seen the real Wayne Rooney.

If we get to the final aslong as stand up and give an account of ourselves we'll win.

We're due a performance at Wembley.

You already know Barca aren't going to.

Unless Mounrinho brings that much attention to it the refs look past it in the final. A longshot but Jose could really help us if he carries on ripping into everybody at UEFA.

In regards to the second goal, it could've been stopped if Marcelo was in position. Messi went around each defender, he got past two with a good enough angle, if Marcelo was there he would've had to round him and make the angle more difficult. They didn't need to hack him down.

Take nothing away though, Messi was the best on the pitch. Magical.

We have definitely not heard the end of this, Mourinho will have something planned for the return leg and whatever happens will only benefit us.

Either the pressure on the ref not to favour Barca gets bigger and bigger, or Barca have to curb their "my face hurts" expression somewhat.

Is there anyone who still thinks Ronaldo is better than Messi?

Me, but if you really want to discuss this, go drag up the Ronaldo v Messi thread, some of the mods are very touchy with Ronaldo's name popping up in this thread.

Yep Ronaldo can head, shoot with both feet, is faster, stronger, taller, can do 50 stepovers in a nanosecond and looks like a Greek God. In all other aspects, Messi is better.

Edit: Ronaldo can also do it on a shit night in Stoke..can Messi?

Just read a fascinating stat. Messi fouled Real Madrid players 6 times in the match. More than any other on the pitch

He should have got a yellow card for a deliberate handball but seconds earlier I thought he should have gotten the free kick so I forgive him for that. But 5 other fouls? Easy to miss the number seeing as they weren't very harsh.

Is this as many fouls as he has conceded in the last 6 games?

And another stat. Or more of a question that I haven't got the answer to. Apparently there are 3 players who have scored 10 goals or more in the PL with a better goal per minute ratio than Messi:eek:

I reckon its Hernandez, RvP and Carroll.

And he's a single dad. Hardest job in the world!
