I heard someone else say this, but I can't see it. Is there an angle I'm not seeing you have? Just looks like he passed it past the keeper without a great deal of power to me

it was like giggs vs. jve in 2003. exactly right foot (weak foot) pass into the net, far netting, freezing the keeper.

can't believe our lot forget tat giggs had a simiar goal in the CL vs. a fecking top cl defense and keeper.

fecking JCL's (not you....since i'm forever envious that you were at that match).

:D Was a belting match, one of my absolute favourite United games

It was quite similar, certainly in the finish past the keeper. I think Messi's goal was better because they had more men behind the ball, and he didn't have a fellow attacker taking one of the defenders away from him. I know which one I was happier about though!

Both goals off the chart tonight. Neither had anything to do with Madrid being down to 10 men. For the first, Madrid had 5 players in there 18 yard box and yet at the time of impact, Messi was the only Barcelona player in the Madrid box. Pretty much same for his Second which was one which be remembered by all who saw it as one of the best goals in a long time (given the context of this game). Again, he basically wiped out 5 Madrid players on his own with no support from his own and single handedly madena mockery of all of them.

He must either have a ball magnet in his foots or some kind of invisible string device that attaches itself to the ball when he comes near it. His close ball control is just freakishly abnormal. A genuine grade a blockbuster talent. Not much else to say really except just a shame he plays for a team full of cheating whiny wankers.

There's no other angle than the ones that were on TV immediately after the goal (here), there's something about the movement of the ball that doesn't look clean to me, I can't really put my finger on what it is.

Far too simplistic way of describing Messi's talent. His control over a football is unique though.

Well it wasn't a clean strike, he was falling away stretching at the ball. He just made sure he placed it right. I wouldn't go off the movement there as an indication that there was a deflection

What's the most goals scored in a full season, all comps, in the last 30 years or so?

Not counting players in crap leagues (the Jardels and Larsson's of the world).

Lionel Messi is severely overrated. he was anonymous for large portions of the game tonight and needs to improve upon his tackling and long-range passing.

If I was Pep I'd consider cashing in while the bandwagon is rolling. I'm sure he will too astute manager that he is.

yes, and if he does, we will pretend we don't want him and stay with bebe, but in a master stroke, we will get him and live happily ever after

I want us to get one of these low center of gravity dribbling machine motherfeckers, someone break out the Argos!

We just need to buy buckets of human growth hormone and rub it on our youth players. Get them all nice and greased up and... Voila!

Wait.. he scores a 2 yard tap in and a mishit shot against a 10 men and we're elevating this flat track bully to Maradona's level? Seriously?

Slightly more subtle WUM attempt

Lionel Messi has moved third into Barca's all time scorers list with 179 goals, behind both Ladislau Kubala (194) and Cesar Rodriguez (235) at the tender age of 23.

11 in 11 in the Champions League
31 in 30 in La Liga
7 in 9 in the Copa del Rey
3 in 2 in the Supercopa de España

52 in 52 in total.

Monster.

Came alive after Real went down a man.

1st goal was all about Afellay, but that 2nd goal was classic Messi. Despite the similarish stats, I had Messi way ahead of Ronaldo a couple of seasons ago, and this season even more so.

For the 2nd goal he let the turbos spool up, no lag and then BOOM...the finish was beautiful too, perfect take on his right foot.

Did Barcelona not lose a player too, earlier even? Though I get the feeling you're not having a go at Messi there..?

The idiots would say anything they possibly can to deny him.

He's fecking 23 years old!

Greatest I've ever seen, he can retire now for me.

Seriously, just retire.

He more or less just takes the piss every single time he hits the field.

They had a reserve keeper sent off(Pinto)...they finished the match with their full compliment on the field.

But I'm definitely not having a go at him, Real went in to contain, and they did that pretty well(Messi did play that nice little pass to Xavi early on in the match, and had a couple of other little moments...but it was always going to be tough, when the opponents plan is to get a 0-0.

Aaah I see, so the Keeper on the bench was sent off. What happened? Must go find the full match highlights.

HT, as both teams are heading into the tunnel, he decides he would bring a bit of thug life into El Clasico. He looked the part too, with his cornrows...there was a pushing and shoving, some Real official got grabbed by the throat...more pushing and shoving, and then everyone went away.

But he got sent off for instigating the 'melee' - if you can call it that, I mean they have fights in hockey, in football it's just a bunch of pussies posing.

^

I hear that (watch some AFL from the '80's if you want to see some hardness in football).

52 goals in 52 games this season...

These stats are incredible but even they do not fully reveal what a player Messi is. For he isn't simply a goal machine. Actually, he is quite involved in the build up, very unlike your typical goal machine. Centre-forward scoring 52-55 goals over a season would be an absolutely fantastic achievment. A No 10 scoring 52-55 goals in one season, well, that's impossible!
