Was totally man marked in the first half and couldn't show his stuff... Not surprised that he got the better of them in the end with the player assigned to man mark him was shown the red...

The only player that deserves a bit of respect tonight, didn't whine or argue much and tried to play good football...

It's funny how his style actually makes what is an amazing goal look less than stellar. He basically just runs with it and the runs past players. Nothing fancy, no flicks or tricks to feint the defenders.

But he has such amazing close control, there is no one who can run as such speed with it under such perfect control. The ball is always out of reach of the defenders, he keeps it so close he can change direction with it at any time to dodge challenges and at such pace the only way to stop him is to go for the man. The epitome of ball control and technique - it makes the stepovers and feints superfluous.

Ronaldinho was more entertaining to watch, but he couldn't do what Messi can.

What. A. Player.

Shame we have to play him in the final. I don't think you can plan for some of the things he does.

the ball to Xavi in the first half with the ball glued to his foot.

Genius.

The footballing brain that seperates him his main rival.

I'd disagree with that, Ronaldinho has shown in the past plenty of times he can dribble past several defenders and keep the ball with his close control as well.

Back to simple finishes and he gets 2 good goals. Barcelona are much better off when he doesnt try to complicate things

Ronaldinho was definitely a better player to watch than Messi, for me.

Think Messi has proved that he IS a better player by now though.

you can say what you want, but he's scoring this goal against real madrid at the bernabeu during a champions league semifinal

granted, is not a cold night in britania stadium

Much prefer Messi..the playmaker aspect of his game shone in that first half with those two gorgeous passes. In the second half, he took initiative and the second goal just captured the imagination of the public..brilliant

Messi's a throwback to the old school. A throwback to the Stanley Matthews, Wolfgang Overath, George Best type players. Players who don't rely on stepovers or fancy tricks, but just on their ability to manipulate the ball using close control and feints..absolutely brilliant.

That second goal left me utterly speachless. Just wow. Too good, far far too good.

Giggs' goal in 1999 was much better. So was Ruud's against Fulham. And Ronaldo's against Fulham.

But because it was Messi it will be vastly over-analyzed and hyped. Sublime goal nonetheless.

Its not going to go down as good a goal as Giggs in 99

But as for the rest. This was the semi final of the CL against their arch rivals. So it really should go down as better than them

Although that RVN goal was wanktastic

TBF Messi's scored better than any of the ones you mentioned bar Giggs v Arsenal. Quality Goal v Madrid trumps an effort v Fulham.

So if Giggs had scored that goal against Nottingham it wouldn't have been great?

Yeah right.

It wouldn't be as iconic that is for sure, taking on a peak Arsenal side in such a monumental game.. in a treble winning season, its the making of legends. Context plays a huge role in the defining of a particular goals worth, if it didn't than some guy dribbling past 5 players in a Sunday League game would attract media coverage.

It was a wonderful run, but did anyone else think the shot was deflected off the defender and wasn't actually going in in the first place?

That is true but it will be glorified as it due to it being v Madrid in the CL.

i know what you say, and you are right

but the thing is that it was a beautifull goal against real madrid in a champions league semifinal and at the bernabeu

you must admit that the moment a goal is scored is important to be remembered for ever or not

giggsys goal was in a FA Cup semi and took us to the final game, had it been in the PL against west bromwich only some of us would remember it

the same aplies to maradonas second goal against england,

the game were a great goal is scored is really important

Hmm... since when I did become a Ronaldo fanboi? This considering some of the posts I've made about him in other threads for basically quitting on United while flirting with Real for months. Odd. I suppose that's all the Bossman can resort to.

Giggs was amazing for the moment yes. But his side was also a man down which made it even more incredible.

Messi was playing a man up with acres of space and took the hand-off from a teammate inside the attacking half. Still a great goal but hopefully the media/fanbois don't go on this was greater.

Ruud's certainly was regardless if it were Fulham or not.
