Lionel Messi | PSG Watch

Looks like he had an excellent performance

I'm not really sure what you're implying to be honest but the things you named are very basic stuff that says almost nothing about the style of play. It's like saying a Tesla is similar to a Mustang because both have four wheels.
I was agreeing with you..

It's actually amazing when you watch some of his older compilations and realize just how fecking special he was as a player.

That's just from 1 season and it's better than 99% of people's career highlights.

Still think that was his best season in his career. He was in peak physical condition.

Messi has really improved his chemistry with mbappe. Gave the assist for the match winning goal today right at the end.

Messi and Neymar seem to play an identical role for PSG currently. PSG are actually more well balanced with one of Messi/Neymar alongside Mbappe and Di Maria maybe.

You just need one of them to release Mbappe on the break which is pretty much PSG's go to move against strong teams.

In modern football, it's so tough to get away with 3 players contributing nothing defensively. Sometimes feel bad for Poch in that regard.

only people that understand football will understand the bold part highlighted. In today modern football, it is almost impossible to be successful when you have three players that contribute nothing defensively. Even Henry stated that on tv a few months ago. Which makes the result Pochettino is achieving even more remarkable.

There' has been some talk that once Poch leaves Paris they will replace Eiffel Tower with Poch replica. Do you know anything about that?

He's definitely picking up form. Although he'd need to win highest assist in ligue 1 and win the champions league as Psg's top scorer for me to consider this a good season for him

Didnt even bother celebrating a last minute winner.

Expensive flop so far, couldn't have happened to a worse club!

Doubt that will happen. PSG really aren't looking that strong and it looks like Mbappe is the main goal outlet.

Same here. Although I think they would win Madrid with ease, they'd crash out at the first sight of City, Liverpool, Bayern and possibly Ajax

Messi really wanted that cut back from Mbappe. With Pedro, or David Villa that would have happened - even Neymar or Suarez - as they are rather selfless players but why should Mbappe do that when he can score himself and it's really his time and team? Sanchez would have gone for goal, same with Eto'o. Henry would have passed but only because he knew his role. Messi really wanted the headlines but should realize it's now all about Haaland and Mbappe with dark horses such as Vlahovic. His role is to facilitate and make Mbappe the best in the world just like Ronaldinho did for him but he ain't having it.

He does actually seem to more than happy to make create goals for others and be a playmaker, but obviously with his goal record in the league I think he's getting somewhat desperate to get some goals under his belt.

Can't see why they would crush Madrid. If play that front 3 they will get overrun. They aren't even crushing teams in the league apart from a match or 2.

You might be on to something, he obviously knows that 2 goals is meagre. But I would actually say it would enhance his reputation if he could go on and record 25-30 assists in a season not just breaking but crushing all assists records. I don't know who holds the record but I know there have been like 10 players recording around 20 assists (Müller, de Bruyne, Özil, Henry, Misimovic). It would further cement his position up there with Pelé who recorded 4 goals 7 assists in 1970 World Cup when his legs had gone but his mind was still above everybody elses.

I don't know he already beat Xavi's assist record in the league in the 2019-2020 season and it was considered an average season for Messi despite being topscorer as well. I mean he already has the all time assist record. Considering his age and how it's going I don't think he'll break any records at PSG. I cant see Messi being an awesome player at 35 or 36. With his wages and stature I think PSG would be better off without him next season with Mpabbe gone.

I wouldn't dare say he is 'underrated' - but it's a fact that people judge him unfairly. That is to say, a good display form by other players' standards will be judged as not good enough for him. The best example for this phenomenon is the 2014 WC. His individual highlights for that tournament is as good as any of the 'agreed upon' recent best players - Modric,Forlan, Zidane etc. I would argue Messi's highlights are far better. Still, people simply assume that he did not deserve that award because he did not reach the benchmarks he himself had set.

that’s a dumb mark, if psg can get to the semi’s with Messi being a top 2 cl scorer will be good enough. Psg have no business winning CL this year

or set the bar so impossibly high that nobody would be considered a success. Nobody in their right mind has psg winning CL.
What's so impossible about a team that made it to the finals and semis and has one of the best teams in Europe with the current balondor winner winning the CL. Like I said, you're the one lowering the bar acting like PSG is Atletico or something

Psg made it to the finals last year because Lewa was injured. I simply said they need to at least make the semi finals which is very fair. Still think Messi has been painfully mediocre in the season although he’s been showing signs of life since the new year.

To deal with the season in such absolutes as “if they don’t win CL, this individual has a failing season” is a rubbish take.

Messi could not score or assist again, and if psg won CL it doesn’t mean Messi was great on the season. By that same token, he could have a good 2022, and psg could get knocked out in the quarters but if Messi genuinely plays better (remains to be seen) doesn’t mean it was a bad season. There’s a whole range, you can’t just deal in absolutes.

Unless he puts in good numbers in the 2nd half of this season for Psg in the league, getting knocked out in the CL will make this at best an average season for him

Honestly, the way his season has unfolded it will indeed be a failure without CL heroics because he's got nothing else at all this season.

That's what moving to such a club does. This happens to PSG managers too. The CL or bust mentality is how it is seen from the outside. Add to that Messi has been poor in the domestic league too.

He has to make an impact when it matters.

Doubt that will happen. PSG really aren't looking that strong and it looks like Mbappe is the main goal outlet.

Literally their only go to move against strong teams is releasing Mbappe on the break with direct vertical passes.

100% but.....
Tbf none of it would matter if he does something special at the World Cup this year. Looking unlikely at the moment.

Sure, and again, Messi has been very average this season. I just don’t buy it as a 100% success or 100% failure with CL but obviously psg getting knocked out early would be a big let down considering the hype at the start of the season

Funny enough, rewatching the recent mbappe goal he also could’ve cut back to Messi who was in a better position but mbappe scored anyway to his credit.

Tbh, I am glad Mbappe took it as Messi would probably hit the bar again, at least with that pass, he got an additional assist:lol:

It's not about the goal. It's about teamplay. Mbappé never pass the ball in the box. Always try to shot. Same with that little shit Xavi Simons.

Messi himself has already registered 21 assists in a single La liga season(2019/20), that is a tied record with Muller for top 5 leagues, Messi has the highest number of assists than any other player since assists are counted(over 350 assists something), so I doubt he requires any more validation for being an assist machine.

Highest in Europe in a single season is Steffen Hofmann with 25 assists in Austrian Bundesliga.

That would be a "good" season? That would give him yet again another Balon d or

Mbappé has 109 assists in his senior club career. IIRC he also has assisted Messi more than the opposite so far this season. I don't know where this narrative is coming from.

Nah, a lot will depend on the world cup, voting will almost guaranteed be extended.
Even CL will take a distant 2nd priority to that.
