Lionel Messi - Performances

It's not an absolute bye, but we have threads saying Guardiola has been underwhelming since his tenure at Bayern, and that Madrid have massively underachieved since Ronaldo joined them. On the other hand I recall APOEL Nicosia getting plaudits from all corners for making it to the last 8 of the Champions League. So there is some sort of expectation for the big clubs of the day to make it to the latter stages, beyond which it can be a crapshoot.
Guardiola hasn't been underwhelming, people expecting such things are being silly.

Madrid have underachieved given the amount they've spent.

And Apoel making it that far is excellent.

The big clubs should make it to the latter stages, just like Germany and Brazil should make it to the latter stages in the World Cup. The only reason it's seeming like such an easy ride to you is because it takes place very year so when bayern have a great team they'll make it pretty far every year whereas Germany or Spain don't get to go as far as they naturally would if the tournament was held every year.

Does anyone worry about next year with Messi?

Xavi leaves Barcelona who will be hard to replace, Rakitic is a dynamic midfielder and has been very good this year but he's not a pacemaker like Xavi was who controls the tempo of the game.

The Copa America is also going to be in a very warm climate in June. The first game for Argentina is on the 13th of June (3 days after the CL Final).

So Messi has to fly from Berlin, no celebrations from the CL Final (if they win of course) right to the Copa America (Chile), then he plays on the 16th of June and the 20th June.

How many games has he played this season? 60? he will need rest after the tournament maybe he'll miss some pre-season but thats a grueling finish to the season for him.

I'd love him to win the next few Ballon D'ors because he deserves it and to be honest whoever comes after him and wins the next few Ballon D'ors they won't have someone like Ronaldo competing with them (when Messi drops to a lower standard Ronaldo is capable of winning it, but Messi is still a level above anyone I've ever seen) so it'll be only one picking them up, it's why I'd like to see Messi win 5-6-7 over the next 3 years.

I just hope he handles resting well after the Copa America because with him, Tevez etc named in the squad they'll reach the finals most likely (and yes I'll have to watch every game).

Pick any Messi highlight reel and it'll be better than the ones you posted.

I don't think so. These were only rarities, I didn't post the popular ones.

Maradona is the most gifted talent of all times, followed by Ronaldinho. Maradona was just too skillful.
Messi has an hability, which is to carry the ball glued to his feet and make changes of direction without loosing speed. Of course he is talented too.

Messi is the best I've ever seen, but when I watch Maradona, I watch some moves or skilsl Messi would never do. And even more, back then the fields were just very bad to be played, with lots of holes and clay. And we won't talk about how hard Maradona was kicked all the time.

For me Messi is the best because of his consistency.

I personally found Ronaldo more entertaining to watch than Ronaldinho. There's something else about watching those step overs/skills/footwork at 90 mph like it always seemed like with Ronaldo.

Sorry I didn't understand well, but the copa america will be during the winter here.

Aye. His stepovers weren't utterly pointless and all...like...well...

I can only go by highlights of Maradona as he was before my time, but I've watched a great deal of full matches of Maradona over the past couple of years as I've been very curious as to who actually is the better player.

For me - it's Messi. It's frightening to think how amazing a footballer will have to be to actually dislodge Messi as GOAT.

This sounds like romanticism really. Di Stefano winning 5 European Cups is also something maradona could only dream of doing.
True. But its not only about the "standard" of the event though. It's more about signifance of the event to the world population. 5 European Cups is definitely much bigger than 1 WC, but if you ask Messi would he swap 2 or even 3 CL for a WC, there's good chance he might be very tempted to do so.

Sure. But it's all a bit overrated isn't it? Had Messi hit that shot inside the post in the final everyone would have said he's definitely the best ever, which I think is silly. It shouldn't be on the basis of that even if he was. It should be based on performances throughout a career.

CL final is on Saturday June 6.

Yoi watched Barca much this year? Xavi hassnt been ever present. He played a bit part role really. Also this current Barca teams doesnt control games the same way anymore - probably because of xavi or maybe they are playing up their biggest strength (front 3).

Infact id say this year has vindicated Messi in a way. People always said he needed Xavi and Iniesta.

Which was always such a silly thing. Maybe now they'll say he needs Suarez and Neymar

Xavi leaving is important but for Barcelona as a whole rather than one player. From whatever I read he seems to be a key man in the dressing room.

I watch Barcelona every game, yes he's been a bit part player but he's good for rotation with iniesta.

I do think for squad depth he's great, and he is a great player to help see out games.

The issue is the this will force messi even deeper at times.

Xavi will be missed for his influence as a leader

Its silly but that's how history book is written. Ability/performance-wise I never doubt Messi is worthy candidate for POAT. But even you are the best of the best you still need to earn it at least once from the world biggest stage for the undisputed no.1 all time legendary status.

Couldn't care less about history books to be honest. I'm not a Barcelona or an Argentina fan to be bothered about that. And actually you're talking about perception, which is dodgy in itself. Messi has done it at the World Cup anyway so that's not really an issue either way.

Player of tournament and if everyone was fit they'd have won it so I agree, to me he's the GOAT.

Stupid that he's starting today. No need to risk injury with two finals coming up.

But Messi cares. His disappointed face after losing WC final really show how much it means to him.

There's absolutely nothing in those videos that Messi can't do.

2015 is shaping up to be his best ever year. Possibly spurred on by the loss in the World Cup final and Madrid winning the CL? The rediscovery of his defensive game on top of everything else is great to see too, simply because it underlines his renewed hunger for the game.

As soon as he played that pass to Neymar for the offside (?) goal you just knew it was going to be one of those games.

He's nailed on to get a goal in the CL final too.

I've always been in the Ronaldo camp but watching Messi this season has been something else.

Just saw the goal against Bilbao and I taught it was just a highlight reel of Messi greatest moment. It is amazing that he can still produce goals like that. In comparison, I have not seen Cristiano Ronaldo take on multiple players on a consistent bases as he used to. Messi still looks like the same player he was years ago, but more intelligent.

he does in 14 games what other players do in a career

his match compilation is better then career compilation of 90% players.....unreal. Best midfielder, best winger and best striker in the world.

This, this guy is unbelievable.
