Leighton Baines

Weren't we linked with Baines when Fergie was around. It seems like a continuation to me rather than Moyes' brain going off on one.

Very true, nothing has ... oh well we bought Buttner but apart from ... oh actually Fabio is back from loan too, but apart from that, NOTHING!
neither can or will be the first choice LB for us. So Evra still is our first choice and he has just not been good enough.
Plus my point was that we are going for a CM too, so why crib?

I really want this Baines signing to go through, so that all of you realize how much of an upgrade he is over the Evra of present.
Good crosses from the full back, confidence while defending against any defender with pace and some skills, we as United fans can deem those as requirements. It seems like most of us here are dropping our standards to accomodate evra.

What a crazy crazy statement, neither Buttner or Fabio CAN or WILL be good enough for first choice LB? Really?

Bollocks. You're grossly underestimating Evra (and possibly overestimating Baines - his defensive work really isn't that great - and one on one's is probably his biggest weakness, apart from challenging in the air).

Baines will be an improvement on Evra, of that I have little doubt. The improvement wont be big enough to be worth 20mil and his wages though which is why I dont understand the transfer.

Meh. Baines isn't better than Evra at defending. In fact I would argue that he's even worse. Also, he is terrible at aerial duels. And confidence while defending against players with pace, Baines isn't faster than Evra. Pretty much he is a downgrade on Evra on general play, at best as good as him at defending and much better in crosses.

How can you know about Fabio? He has been brilliant the only time we have given him the chance to play a run of games (though it was in the right side but I don't think that that's a problem, there are countless of examples of right footers doing well in the left).

I don't agree with that, I think Evra is the better player as of today. However, Evra is four years older than Baines and he could provide good competition/rotation and a more seamless transition when Pat has to step down.

Evra is the better dribbler and carrier of the ball and slightly(if at all) better defensively. Baines is comfortably the better crosser of the ball which will make a huge difference to our attacking threat if he comes here. It'l be evident if he joins imo, our attackers will have a great time specially given how shit the delivery has been of late.

Yeah fair play, I agree on the crossing bit.

The transfer window isn't fair, should end before the start of the season, mind you that only works if all seasons start on the same day throughout the World, which they don't.

I don't see why it can't open on June 1st rather than July 1st then stop in the 1st or 2nd week of August.

Are we really pushing for a player who is almost 29 and playing in a position where we have 3 players for it, the main player doing really well last season and starting this one just as well?

Because everyone goes on holiday or are involved in some international tournament.

Club managers, chief execs & agents aren't though.

Yes...

Why are you lot even bickering over a player who is not even certain to come? I thought something concrete had happened when i saw this thread jumped a few pages fairly quickly

To be fair, I think Baines would be a cracking player in our squad. We don't have a real left winger outside of a 40 year old Giggs, all the other players we can field in that position want to cut inside. Evra is a great player on that wing with his driving runs and link-up play but the final ball is often lacking. He played a few great ones these past few games but looking at his previous seasons he doesn't have the consistency. With Baines we have an incredible weapon on that wing while the "winger", be it Welbeck, Young, Kagawa or anyone else can do his thing in more central positions.

But I do like Evra and don't want him to leave or play a lesser role in the team. If he was leaving Baines would be a no brainer. Now it's not so simple.

We needed a CM and a LB during the start of the last season. Nothing has changed now, except for the fact that Evra has stepped up slightly(still below par IMO).
If you believe that we are going for a LB then you also have to agree to the fact that we are going for a CM, right? So, what's your point?

That we don't need a £15m+ left back. Simple stuff.

How about a £8m left back? If you concerned about price... I promise you.. The money will not be taken out of your personal account.

It bothers me when we seem to mither over an extra few million quid when we're shopping at the upper end of the transfer market. I'm not worried about the cash in itself, but rather wondering whether we could spend the Baines cash better in midfield. We're not a club that can spend without ramifications.

The money is not the issue. If we needed him I would have been good with paying even 20m for him but we don't need him

I don't get the deal with people knowing what's worth how much.
Anyway, I love paddy too, but he is not the same anymore. I see Jones/Rafael vs a winger and I see Evra vs a winger. The difference is blatant. Hell so many times Evra just waits for the winger to come to the edge of the box. He waits there, literally. Anyway, ask some everton fans if they start shitting in their pants when Lionel Lennon is running at their LB, cause well we certainly do, and we can do better.
Plus, we might spend this season playing Kagawa/Rooney/Welbeck on the left, the value Baines will add from an attacking point of view

It's because United don't have a bottomless transfer budget, and people like me worry that spending £15m+ on a left back is folly when our CM is still unresolved.
