Leighton Baines

Evra and Baines alone is overkill. It won't last long if it happens. But then, Moyes may be looking for competition this year, assuming Evra will be gone in a year anyway.

I like him. He's probably the best left-back in Europe. I hope the club signs no one if it ensures that this guy doesn't come. A totally unnecessary signing if ever there can be one. He has maybe got two years on Evra, he's not that superior to him, sends out a wrong message to Fabio, I love Evra and would like to see him retire here. This is the season that Fabio should start to be rotated with Evra to see if he is ready to make the spot his own when Evra retires. Signing Baines would mean either we are limiting Fabio's chances or selling Evra, neither of which is a situation which I'd like to see.

Really? Would people really say so if we weren't linked with him. And how strange that for the best left back in Europe (by default world) there is interested only one club and how the best left back in Europe is playing for Everton, not for one of the European giants.

I can't think of a less exciting/necessary signing. I'd much rather we sign no one than sign Baines. What could possibly be the point in having both Evra and Baines in the same team?

sure about that?

Yeah I meant QPR.

There's a massive difference between being an on loan player with a small team and being a promising player with a club like United. In the former circumstances the club wouldn't mind (or can't afford not to) playing players with niggling injuries. Their squad is somehow limited and lets face it, if Fabio fecks his career while playing with a niggling injury, its not really their problem. At Man United players needs to be in top shape because one mistake can result the loss of the EPL title or an extra round in the CL. Not to forget that Fabio is our player so if he fecks his career then we would be ruining a potential world class player. That would mean millions lost and probably we would also damage United's relationship with his other brother.

As I said I would have preferred if the millions spent on Baines are spent in CM. However Baines signing wouldn't ruin Fabio's career. First of all because we've currently got one real right back (Rafael). Jones can do the job but he's a CB and we'll probably need him in CM. Rafael is good but he tend to get injured rather frequently so Fabio will have ample chances to play. Not to forget that Baines in nearly 30 and Evra is 32. In 1-2 years time Evra will be a goner and in 3-4 tyears time it would be Baines turn (either out of OT or on the bench).

Anyway even if these deal doesn't make sense there are managers who tend to have a soft spot for players and tend to drag them wherever they go. Moyes seems to have got a soft spot for Baines and there's little we can do about that.

Are you suggesting QPR played Fabio even when he had niggling injuries? That's some serious shit to enforce your point. Dont you think Fabio would have refused to do it?

Anyways, my point isnt that it would ruin fabio's career, what I was saying was in response to a poster saying Baines and Evra would allow us to rest them and keep them fresh. Its too expensive for that to be the case.

Anyways, if baines comes, I see him taking over the LB slot from Evra, as much as I love Evra, Baines's quality in delivery will tilt things heavily in his favor.

Evra, Baines, Fabio and Buttner is much more than simply depth.

We're going to have more left backs than midfielders the next season.

Buttner will be sold/loaned. Fabio will cover his brother as a right back. We currently have 1 real RB to cover Rafael and he'll probably end up on loan to Boca Juniors.

I said probably. Should have added "one of" :)

Alaba at Bayern is supposed to be good but he doesn't want to play LB. Coentrao, Marcelo, Alba, Evra, Baines, Cole are the top left backs in Europe unless I am missing someone. We already have one of the best, no point in adding another.

My thoughts too. If Evra was on his way back to Monaco or wherever, I'd be happy with Baines, but I'd pick Paddy in the left back spot over Baines any day.

You shouldn't be shocked. I can make a list of young players who were played even when they weren't fit and which ended up hindering/ruining their career. Hargreaves and Owen are two of them and they were players playing with much bigger clubs then QPR. Add to the fact that Fabio was an on loan player playing at a club who was fighting not to get relegated and the stakes get even higher.

Also Fabio is young. At that age its hard to keep the player on the bench rather then play. On one hand the manager got a young player eager to play every single game to prove his manager his worth. On the other hand the team is in shambles and is risking relegation and a potential financial meltdown. The temptation at that stage is real.

I believe that if we get Baines he'll be a first teamer. He'll rotate with Baines with the latter playing the major games. Baines signing will allow us time to assess Fabio in his natural role (rb)+ it will give Buttner and Varela the 1 year first team football they need (on loan). Under such circumstances I wont be surprised if Evra ends up leaving next year which will leave Buttner, Fabio and Varela competing with one another to compete as first team cover for Baines and Rafael.

Is there any proof for this or are you just basing it on conjuncture? Because really, I find it tough to believe that Fabio would have continued to play with niggles thus risking his future specially when he was on loan at another club. I understand why you think its probable, just that I dont buy it.

The rest of your post, well, it fits if Evra is leaving next season but then we'l find it tough to keep them both happy this year and with Evra marginalized this year, we wont get good value for him which costs us millions. Doesnt make sense

This a WC year and Evra isn't assured to be part of the french squad never mind be a starter. If Baines arrives I expect Evra to leave this window and if not surely by the winter window. That is if he has real ambitions for the WC.

Lets say I consider the fact that Fabio was able to play a lot more minutes then in previous years as wishful thinking. I hope I am wrong though. Fabio has great potential and it would be a shame if his career is damaged because he's injury prone. Anyway we still need a quality cover for Rafael. Jones is not a natural RB.

Honestly I cant see Evra staying beyond next year.

No sense signing him really. Much better off offering Southampton silly money for Shaw and just get him to gradually replace Evra as opposed to getting a 29 year old in who's never played in the CL before.

I'm with Al. Why not wait for Shaw in a year or two's time when Evra's finished or give the very talented Fabio a run? Absolutely no need for him if we plan on keeping Evra. I rate Baines higher but we're better off spending the money on a midfielder.

There is still money to buy one and two midfielders in addition to Baines.

Let's be honest, the money we don't spend this Summer will be reabsorbed into the club, and it won't be saved for next season. If we can get a good left back for a reasonable price (12-15m), then it's not a big deal. We might not need him that much, but we're not spending big bucks anyway, and if that makes Moyes happier about the squad, then I don't see the big problem.

And believe me, even if we don't sign Baines, we're still not signing Ozil.

Betting suspended means jack shit nowadays.

Has Baines been tested properly at the top level?

Few games for England and facing Lennon/Valencia/Nani aside

Id be more in favour that we start looking for Evras eventual replacement for next summer

What is thetop level, if it is not playing against the likes of United, City, Chelsea, Arsenal?

I think when playing in the champions league you are operating on a different plane on a tactical level - you mention some good sides there though I think in Evra we have a player who has been to World Cups, played in CL later stages with Monaco and United

So we should only buy players with CL experience?

We play far more games vs top level opposition domestically during a season than in the CL.

Yep, but if we sign an expensive player who is in his peak and is 28-29 years old surely it would be good to have Champions League experience. No on would have suggested that Shaw should had UCL experience in order to sign him, cause he's young and can only become better and learn from his mistakes. Baines on the other side is relatively old for a signing and likely will only have 5 or less years with us, so in these kind of signings I think that UCL experience should be a must.

yeah, the group stages of the champions league tends to be a lower level than games against the top 6 in the PL

It's romanticism to think that just by playing a game in the CL or a world cup, you have experience of playing vs top class opposition.

Has Baines though?

Everton and Baines were never under the same pressure to win against top opposition as us playing 3 games a week in the run in of a title challenge
