Leighton Baines

If we do sign Baines, HOPEFULLY NOT, then surely Evra must have asked to leave?

If Moyes feels that Baines is a better left back than Evra, then it actually makes perfect sense.

Well personally I would question if he was a better left back and if he was, whether he would be around 10m net better plus the loss of experience to the team I would personally say is unlikely. The move for Shaw if it is true would make much more sense to me, a young player with lots of potential who can learn from Evra over a few seasons and hopefully then step up as first choice.

It should also be remembered that Rio is getting on as well and with his back might not have much time left and we're still to see how Vidic will last over a season with his injury. There's a big gap in experience between the defenders we have left bar Evans so that would be another reason it would be off if Evra was moved on.

Sam Wallace, along with Henry Winter, is the journalist I trust the most. He wouldn't write shite.

So we'll sell Nani and sign Baines, as well as not doing anything with our dire midfield and wing options? Great.

As soon as Moyes was appointed, the 2 players many said we would sign were Baines and Fellaini and it may well happen. Very underwhelming, even more so considering Evra is still a top player and doesn't need to be replaced.

And when you then factor in that Fellaini's not solving any of our midfield needs, other than adding a, slightly underwhelming, extra body in there with silly hair... Well go figure.

It's not the most convincing of summers for a new manager desperately trying to prove that he's NOT going to turn us into a slightly better paid Everton.

Wallace is an annoying squeaky-voiced scrote who now appears to have glued some pubic hair to his chin. Winter is a posh-but-dim who would be better suited to writing about rugger.

It's the safe option quite clearly. He's missed out on the main targets which were never really possible to begin with, and now plan b is to sign his old club's 2 best players. Don't know if that's the answer really.

We can rotate the two to keep them fit (or have a good backup in case of injury), they're not that young after all and both will do with a bit of rest to keep them fresh..

Besides, and more importantly, this means that the earlier reports about the two being unsettled and willing to join us are likely true, which means Fellaini could follow suit.

I completely disagree with that but this isn't the right thread to get into it. Just because the Independent have today published a story saying Baines wants to move to United doesn't mean that we're any closer to signing him or that it's anywhere near inevitable or imminent. Nothing might have happened since the double bid we made, this doesn't really mean anything other than Baines would want to join us, something we could have deduced ourselves.

That's where young players come in mate, not one of the best LBs in the league. Fabio should have that role.

Fabio might not be ready yet though. More than likely we'll rotate Evra and Baines for a season, with Evra leaving next year. Then we'll have 3 or so years with Baines as our 1st choice and Fabio as understudy.

I can see Moyes playing the both of them in the same team together on the left, while Valencia/Young stick on the right (which Nani is apparently off :()

It does tell me that Moyes has asked us to bid for Baines and Fellaini, both underwhelming, neither of pressing need.

RE Fellaini: He doesn't give us drive or mobility, and he doesn't give us passing ability or a creative presence for our first XI, which is exactly what our first XI is lacking in midfield. He would be a decent option as a backup for Carrick, but the priority surely is getting in a foil for Carrick, who, let's face it, is pretty decent.

As you say though that's for Fellaini's thread. To the Fellaini thread!

Great signing. Hope he has asked. One thing we missed on Monday was a good left peg delivery.

So what is fabio supposed to do this entire season? And why are we paying 15mil or so that it'd take to get him and 70k odd p/w that he'd be on to get baines when that could be used elsewhere?

Its as luxury a signing as they come. If City would be doing something like this, we'd be up in arms crucifying them for throwing money and reducing the quality of the league etc etc.

The same Fabio that played in the champions league final? The only way he'll be "ready" as you say is if he gets game time. Us signing Baines will limit him to none pretty much.

Fabio is a right back. He started playing as left back because of his brother (Brazil U20 team). I don't think that we need Baines to be honest. However we need to accept

a) that managers tend to have a soft spot for certain players and would try to take them with them everywhere if possible
b) Fabio has yet to prove that he's able to remain fit.

a) Doesnt make sense when we have Evra.
b) Fabio played over 1300mins for Wigan last season.

Yes, he is far better than Evra going forward, would add so much to us. Arguably the best crosser of a ball in the league.

I'm just trying to fit him in the team here, I don't think we need him to be honest, which is why the more important part of this story for me is actually Fellaini. Unlike some here, I kind of want Fellaini to join us, I think he can be of good value for us.

Same here. I want him too.

People talk about us taking his two best players from his old club as if he came from Wigan. Everton are a good side and both players are quality footballers. We were linked with both players under SAF, the only reason it might be considered underwhelming is because we were after Fabregas and Thiago (allegedly) but they'd both strengthen our squad. Baines, admittedly, seems unnecessary but who can deny how good a player he is and has been in the last few years? He's been one of the stand-out players in the League in recent times, and I'm not just talking about left-backs.

Baines is a fine player. At times Everton last year played some of the best football in the league, Baines being a big part of that.
