Leighton Baines

No sense signing him really. Much better off offering Southampton silly money for Shaw and just get him to gradually replace Evra as opposed to getting a 29 year old in who's never played in the CL before.

a) Doesnt make sense when we have Evra.
b) Fabio played over 1300mins for Wigan last season.

There's a massive difference between being an on loan player with a small team and being a promising player with a club like United. In the former circumstances the club wouldn't mind (or can't afford not to) playing players with niggling injuries. Their squad is somehow limited and lets face it, if Fabio fecks his career while playing with a niggling injury, its not really their problem. At Man United players needs to be in top shape because one mistake can result the loss of the EPL title or an extra round in the CL. Not to forget that Fabio is our player so if he fecks his career then we would be ruining a potential world class player. That would mean millions lost and probably we would also damage United's relationship with his other brother.

As I said I would have preferred if the millions spent on Baines are spent in CM. However Baines signing wouldn't ruin Fabio's career. First of all because we've currently got one real right back (Rafael). Jones can do the job but he's a CB and we'll probably need him in CM. Rafael is good but he tend to get injured rather frequently so Fabio will have ample chances to play. Not to forget that Baines in nearly 30 and Evra is 32. In 1-2 years time Evra will be a goner and in 3-4 tyears time it would be Baines turn (either out of OT or on the bench).

Anyway even if these deal doesn't make sense there are managers who tend to have a soft spot for players and tend to drag them wherever they go. Moyes seems to have got a soft spot for Baines and there's little we can do about that.

Apparently this is from the first day of pre-season? No quotes yet and is all "The Independent understands". Wouldn't read too much into until i hear something from Martinez. We play tonight so we will hear something then.

I predict lots of assists to Van Persie if we sign him.

His crossing ability and skill would see us score more goals and RVP will love playing with him. It would also allow RVP to be in the box from free kicks and corners as opposed to taking them because we'd have someone with just as good a delivery. Baines could even play left side of midfield, in front of Evra.

That's something I was thinking about. Has he ever done that for Everton? Evra famously forgot how to play football when asked to play left wing.

Baines is a fine player. At times Everton last year played some of the best football in the league, Baines being a big part of that.
Who are you mixing Everton up with? They played their usual pragmatic, defensive 451 in most games (even at home) and scored a miserly 55 league goals.

I am not understanding the club in this summer. I can't help but think that this deal is completely pointless if Evra stays.

Shaw will develope better at Soton playing regularly than getting the odd game at United. Can be bought in a couple of years' time.

Baines is a like for like replacement of Evra, only 3-4 years younger.

I too think Baines is a better player than Evra, if not for overall gameplay, his set piece play can be very useful too. That said, Evra is a great character to have around.

We won't play him on the wing. His best qualities when attacking are his overlapping(and underlapping) runs and crossing. Give him the ball wide left with one or two men on him from a standing start and he'll be hugely less effective.

I wouldn't mind seeing him come here tbh. He's a quality player, and if we are to play a tucked in left winger, Baines is more suited to LB than Evra is

Just because they didn't score many goals, it doesn't mean they didn't play good football. You can play as well as anybody, but if you have Anichebe or Jelavic(on last seasons form anyway) then you're going to struggle for goals. Put Van Persie, Rooney or Hernandez in that team and they'd have scored a bucketful.

Hardly agree with you but you're spot on in this case. Everton under Moyes has always played percentage football and I haven't seen them playing attractive football that much. Unless hook the ball to Fellaini has become attractive in the last few days.

They played some good football at times last season.

Are you taking the mick? Everton played some very nice football last year, mostly coming down that left side with Baines and Pienaar. You obviously didn't see much of them last year.

I guess that every team plays some good football at times. But, Everton hardly classified as a team who plays good football. They were tactically solid, good defensively and played a low risk game. No-one is saying that they were Stoke, but neither they played good football for the majority of games. Try Swansea and Soton for teams who played good football.

, good defensively and played a low risk game.

You didn't watch us last season.

EDIT: Let me reiterate that...you can't have watched us that much at all last season if you think that. We were actually rather poor defensively by our standards, and we weren't low risk at all tbh, we were going for the win in pretty much every single game and we were dominating a lot of them. If it weren't for a lack of cutting edge we could have been winning by 2 or 3 goals most weeks.

Everton were excellent to watch at times last season, and Baines relationship with Pienaar was one of the main reasons for that.

Actually, they played quite similar to Soton last season, now you mentioned them.

Funny how they all said he wouldn't ask for a move.

I don't think he would point blank force a move. I wouldn't be surprised if he said that he would like to be kept informed of clubs interests and that if someone like United came in for him he would find it hard to stay if the deal was right. He's a good bloke aswell as footballer and he wouldn't be a cnut about it.

He has always come across as decent lad.

He probably wants to be paid his true value, you may be surprised how important that becomes to a player his age.

Yep. He's probably saying he wants the club to consider any offer but he won't kick up a fuss if they don't. He is a model professional.

ffs I don't want this to happen. Baines is so overrated it's crazy.
Stop whining! :p We create so much space down the left and more often than not, feck all comes of it. Even against Chelsea Evra had at least 4 or 5 opportunities to put the ball in early while he had the space, yet even after a touch he still delivered poorly!

Baines would be far better in those situations, his quality from the left is far more accurate and reliable. Better delivery from the left could have easily seen us win that game against Chelsea.

I like him. He's probably the best left-back in Europe. I hope the club signs no one if it ensures that this guy doesn't come. A totally unnecessary signing if ever there can be one. He has maybe got two years on Evra, he's not that superior to him, sends out a wrong message to Fabio, I love Evra and would like to see him retire here. This is the season that Fabio should start to be rotated with Evra to see if he is ready to make the spot his own when Evra retires. Signing Baines would mean either we are limiting Fabio's chances or selling Evra, neither of which is a situation which I'd like to see.

That was their one attacking ploy - they had no creativity in CM/AM which is why they banged that drum over and over.

I'll admit that my anger took over me but still I don't want this signing to happen because it'll mean the end for Evra and he's my current favorite Utd player.
If we're to sign a new LB then I'd prefer it to be someone younger than Baines and who has more potential (Luke Shaw ? ). Besides there are more pressing concerns than the LB position and this mainly why I hope this is not true.

Baines the best LB in Europe ? You really believe that ?
