Leighton Baines

Signing Baines makes no sense. I hope we don't increase our offer him. There's barely any difference in quality between Evra and Baines and any difference is going to be worth the 20m Everton will demand

I'm not sure if we're looking for a better player, or just another quality option for the role.

Can't imagine we'd be looking to have both Baines and Evra competing for LB, real overkill and can't see how it's attractive to either in a w.c. year, need to be playing as much as possible. If Baines comes Evra is surely leaving.

Evra>Baines as a defender.

I love England, its my country, and I don't have a monkey on my back about the national team but sometimes our media see what they want to see when it comes to our players. Baines is good not great defender. The people who say he should be challenging Ashley Cole for first choice left back spot are just wrong. Being able to score fantastic free kicks does not a defender make.

Attacking wise Baines may be better than Evra, although Evra is a better dribbler, but there's no doubt that in current form Evra's a better defender. People complain about Evra's positioning but Baines' isn't any better and Baines' benefits from a system where his midfield has given him a lot of protection. Over the past year Evra's form has improved to somewhere back to where it used to be and, frankly, in 2009-10 Evra was the best left back in the Premier League so even 75% of that form is better than most.

Id rather have shaw than baines
Loan him back to southampton for a year then bring him in next year.
Its not that bains isnt good but I dont think hes a big enough improvment (if any) or young enough to justify the money

You are wrong about him not being good enough to challenge Cole. Cole was fantastic but age is catching him up and Baines has been better than him the last 2 years for my money. Cole and Evra are still quality players but Baines is better but not £20m better that's for sure.

I like Baines, if he was a few years younger signing him would be a great move. As it is it's still hard to imagine we'll actually regret signing him, it's a fairly safe transfer.

Not a big surprise that we made a bid. United usually pursue every quality, English player and Baines is one of them.

Accommodating him with Evra on LB slot is another thing but I guess his productivity is just superb and hard for Moyes to ignore that.

Just let Fabio play more. No use in spending 15m on Baines, who is 5 years older.

Its clear that we have been overplaying Evra the last few seasons. The man is a machine, but with tiredness sometimes comes defensive errors, and Evra is no stranger to those. Fabio IMO isn't a good enough option to fall back on at this point in his career.

Amazing how he could start CL semis and finals for us and now can't be back up to a player who never gets injured or suspended anyway, so much so we have to spunk 15+ million up the wall on a 29 year old for rotation purposes.

12m for Baines would be a decent buy, as there are certainly plenty of games to rotate him and Evra.
However, 15upwards is starting to get a bit silly and unnecessary with Buttner and Fabio there if needs be.

Moyes must be really frustrated at how this summer has gone. He probably presumed getting players at United would be a stroll.

On the twitter thread, Buttner's being shipped off to Besiktas for a year's loan apparently.

So expect us going back hard for Baines now.

Hmmm, Buttner on loan, Evra and Baines to split duty, Rafael and Fabio to split the right, and Varela for the U21s for now?

I don't think Evra or Baines would be willing to sit out games to be honest. Another thing, if we're going to pay £15-20m for a left-back (that we don't fecking need but that's a different story) then you're going to play him. They're both first-team players, there is no in-between. In that case, I think Evra would want to go or get sold which in my opinion would be a mistake and totally unnecessary.

Looking at those stats, it's funny that people are talking about Evra on the wing ahead of Baines. Other way round from that:

What is it that we have with Besiktas? Got Johnsen from them, sent Bebe there, now Buttner...

Jorge Mendes is heavily involved with that club.

Baines would add much more to our side going forward, he'd be an upgrade on Evra. His set pieces are also that good, we could get RVP in the box to be on the end of them.

The obvious thing is to buy Luke Shaw and let him understudy Evra.

Just signed a 5 year contract so it won't happen with Southampton having no need to sell. From what I hear he is a big Chelsea fan as well and it wouldn't surprise me if they have him earmarked to take over from Cole.

No.

I would have thought Chelsea would have bought Shaw by now
I hope not he looks quality.

Evra won 2.4 per cent more of his tackles, blocked twice as many shots, and was much more willing to put his head in where it hurts - he won 62.2 per cent of his 111 aerial duels, compared to just 39.3 per cent of 28 aerial duels for Baines.
The Manchester United captain also made more than twice the number of clearances, 165 to 75, and nearly three times as many headed clearances, 111 to 36.
Staggering difference in defensive contribution. Imo the last thing we need is an even more attacking fullback. We conceded a lot last season (for a plethora of reasons), its not like Baines will shore up the defence. I only see him making it more vulnerable.

edit: the stats above make Baines' chances created stats completely irrelevant for me.

Neither makes sense to me but isn't the general consensus that evra is the better defender andbaines offers more go forward?
Evra is faster, more dangerous in the opposing box and surprisingly good in the air considering his size. Where as Baines has a stronger cross and a vicious long shot.
Defensively, they're not far apart, Baines a little more solid, but Evra can get back quicker to harry wingers.

Of course, the way both play, if this were to come to pass, it'd make little difference who started as full back, as they'd probably constantly overlap each other.
