Leighton Baines

I always liked Baines, he was such an integral part in Moyes' game plan and his overlapping runs on the left wing were such a weapon for Everton.

I wouldn't want Evra to leave though.

I know you were joking but, it's the money men that need to okay the bids - plus Roberto is the manager now.

Saw this article floating out there as well http://www.espn.co.uk/football/sport/story/216399.html#

I like Baines but, I'd rather he does stay at Everton and we stick with Evra for now and give Fabio/Buttner a chance to prove themselves in the next year or two. If they don't then look at what options are out there.

At 28 this will be his last chance to move to a big club and test himself in the champions league, it is now or never!!

Barcelona are out there signing Neymar, Bayern are stripping their rivals of their best players and what are we doing? Trying to get Baines from Everton and Barca's backup players. Be nice if we could go out and get a big player this summer. We are in that bracket after all, if not top of it!!!

I'm not sure if you've noticed but that little Barca B player who has a 100 starts for the club is vying for a place alongside xavi, iniesta, busquets and fabregas. Il agree Baines isn't in the top bracket but he's still a good player who is a lethal supply chain from the left when given the right kind of support.

True for him but, I don't see him being a target for anyone outside the PL (even though he maybe should) and as such don't want him ending up at any of our domestic rivals to play in the CL, all of which would be improved - even Chelsea.

Baines is a good player and would be a good signing.

I don't really rate him if i'm honest. He's good, you've just summed him up right there. We'd be replacing our first choice LB with a good player. He's a Young type signing to me, someone who will do fine in the PL and be a decent squad player for us. But he isn't imo a first choice LB. For the amount of money required to sign him he'd be a waste of our resources when we require it elsewhere in the squad.

If Evra does go, I'd be happy with Baines and Fabio as our LBs. If Evra stays however, then I dont see the point in Baines.

We're all doomed. Mass suicide is the only viable option.

I agree, a player who has been in the team of the year the last 2 years is just 'good'.

so the best left back in the premier league for two years running would in his prime be nothing more than a decent squad player?
I'm not saying he's some godlike player we're greatly in need of, and I'd prefer it if Evra were to stay if this potential signing means what I think it means, but that's just going too far right there.

We'd be replacing our first choice left back with pretty obviously the best left back in the league. It's not exactly a thrilling signing, but it's pretty much the safest bet we've made in years, when you consider that RVP had his injury history.

Yet Ashley Cole still gets picked ahead of him in Internationals. I know that's a pretty shite accusation, but there is a point to it. If Baines really was as good as people make out, he'd have established himself in the International team ahead of Cole (who's form has been pretty mediocre for a season or two now) and be at a bigger club than Everton.

How much more would he improve the club? Would he even improve the club? He'll be 29 in December, so it's not like we're spending the cash on a player who's significantly younger and better than the player in his current position. So really, with the issues we have in the squad and the little need for investment in the LB position, why exactly would buying him make sense?

I see it as a waste of money when we're at a pretty important stage of the squads development with Giggs, Scholes and Rio either retired or shortly to retire. I'm not doubting he'd be decent for us, he'd do the job. But would he really be much of an improvement on Evra? Not convinced.

Milner gets picked ahead of Walcott most of the time. You really think getting picked for England is an indicator of quality?

Ashley Cole whist being the incumbent has consistently performed for England, and his playing at Chelsea in recent years probably does contribute too.

Baines has maintained a high standard of output for two consecutive seasons so its' not some flash in the pan, if as we hope it continues he should improve us in an attacking sense a bit [Evra had a better 12/13 no doubt although he has been erratic in recent years].

Assuming Evra's departure it woudl be a smooth transition in so far as the quality level one trusts, Moyes will see as a degree of certainty he could do with right now.

Why do Gerrard and Lampard still get games for England? Why did Terry still get games for England? Why does Cole still get games? They live on past reputation. Cole has been poor this season for Chelsea yet he's still getting picked ahead of Baines because Hodgson is an idiot, which is noticeable in his retraction to the England of old.

Why is he not at a bigger club than Everton? Because we haven't had the need to let him leave.

It's a shame we missed out on Jordi Alba last summer. Better than both Baines and Evra for me, plus much younger than them and went for about £11m.

It's like the Carrick debate...one of the key cogs central to a period of success stretched over 7 seasons, he's barely been able to make an impact with a bit-part role for England. It's not a reflection on how good a player he is, it's the mentality of our managers who are picking the same failing players (at international level) even though it's clearly not worked and in the case of players like Cole in regards to Baines, as well as Gerrard/Lampard in regard to Carrick its not really an indication as to who is 'better'.

They can't establish themselves because even after a good solid game, when the golden generation are fit and available they will play in the big, meaningful games.

Evra and Baines are on a similar level. I can only imagine Evra wants to head back to France.

Personally, I think Baines is better than Evra, but the difference is negligible to be considering an upgrade unless of course Evra is leaving.

This is the sum of our ambition - strengthening in area we dont need. It's a big F off to Fabio. Fellaini here we come.

To be fair, the 3-4 year age difference is significant, if not overwhelmingly so. If it was the case that getting Baines sorted us out at LB for an extra 4 years, it would be worth spending a fair bit on him.

I'm amused by this talk about Fabio, he's not particularly relevant to this discussion. He's never been all that impressive at left-back, at least compared to his performances on his natural side. And we heavily rely on having a left-footed player in that position due to our lack of left-sided wingers.

It's glaringly obvious that his future, in the short term at least, will be as a utility player who mostly provides cover for his brother. It'll be nice to have four proper full-backs in the squad, even if one of them is about as good at defending as Nani is.
