Actually it's a good question to ask. Although I think Dendoncker would be more a replacement for Carrick than Matic, the same principle applies. It's much easier to transition from one player to another when the player taking up the mantle is already an established part of the team. I don't know how long Carrick will stay, but I don't see it as a couple more seasons at best. Giving Dendocker the time to settle by signing him early would be astute business, but that is provided that we've actually identified and rate him.
Matic being all but done means this is dead.
Last season we had too many midfielders, hence why we sold Schnerderlin (who barely got a game) and Bastian (who trained with the reserves for a fair bit). If the Matic deal goes through and assuming we're playing a midfield 3, we'd have Carrick and Matic to play CDM, Pogba and Herrera taking the other 2 spots, with Fellaini, Pereira (came back from loan so he's like a new signing in a sense) and potentially Fosu Mensah as the bench players. That's plenty of options. It would make little sense for us to sign Dendoncker now and sell Fellaini, especially if Dendoncker is brought in to be bench player as I don't think he'd be particularly happy to come without guaranteed game time. Fellaini is also happy to play from the bench and having him around gives us squad depth.
Dendoncker could well sign for United, but I reckon if it were to happen it'll be next summer, when Carrick retires and Matic has settled in.
TFM needs at least a 1 year loan and Carrick is a former player in all but name. If Dendoncker comes then he will be a bench player irrespective of whether we sign him now or in 12 months time

I agree with TFM needing a loan, but we currently need him to fill as a squad player to cover 2/3 positions. Carrick was incredibly important for us last season and it's when he came into the team that our midfield had some balance and Pogba's form picked up a bit. I reckon Matic will provide this same balance, while adding some more physicality to our midfield (without the passing range of Carrick though). And yes Dendoncker if we signed him next season would likely still be a bench player, but he'd be only behind Matic at that stage (assuming Carrick isn't given another new contract), so he'd get plenty more game time. And depending on his progress next season, he may well be knocking for a first team place the following season.
Nah Carrick was pretty much finished by last season. Unfortunately there seem to be this unwritten code were United legends are entitled to 1 year of salary despite doing feck all. If Giggs, Gaz, Rooney and Keane could do it so can Carrick.
We cant go throughout the entire season campaign with just Matic as DM.
Hmm well I guess we can agree to disagree then, as I remember around the time of the away game at Swansea when Carrick started for the first time and our form suddenly improved and we went on that unbeaten run. Although, Carrick's legs may have gone by the end of the season.
Pereira isn't a holding midfielder. Bastian & Morgan have left within the last year. So 3 out won't be replaced by 1 plus a player who can kind of do a job there.

From the little I've seen he seems very 2 footed, great passer, good in the air, not the quickest but doesn't seem to suffer for it. If Matic doesn't happen he'd be a good option, just unsure how long to bed into the side. He'd be a starter though against what we have at cdm so he'd get games and experience. Doesn't look like he'd struggle physically either which would be a bonus.

I think he'd more likely be looked at as an option to replace Carrick next season. We might scout him continuously throughout the season. It would be a bit weird to just sign a player after only scouting him once (as far as I know those reports were the 1st time we scouted him). Sounds like a case of Jose being impressed with him when he played us and wanting to know if he's capable of playing for Utd. Right age not only to replace Carrick but also Matic really.
I don't think it was on for this season to begin with to be honest, cant imagine we would still be scouting him if we were planning on buying this summer.
I agree, its pretty unlikely with the amount of time that we seem to put in to transfers that we would buy after scouting him once (allegedly).

TFM is a youth player who has been training with the first team and plays the occasional few minutes for the first team. Dendoncker is an international for Belgium, having played tons of games in Europe and Belgium competition. I'd say he's a lot better, at the moment. Although you can't compare Anderlecht with Utd of course.
Right now, yes he's comfortably better. But TFM has age and time on his side to improve massively.

I think it all depends on whether Failini stays or goes. If he leaves now, then we sign Leander. If he remains for another season we'll get him next year.

So really, we have 6 players for three positions. Which hardly screams depth.
MEN saying that we won't sign him this summer (obviously given that Matic signed) and Paris United are saying that PSG are tracking him.

That seemed like more than enough especially when you take into account TFM and McTominay who can do a job in a pinch.I guess so. That's why the more I think about it, the more Matic is a really clever buy by Mourinho.
We have a pretty young squad. With Rooney gone, and Carrick possibly going next year, we're going to lack experience. Not only game experience, but players who know what it's like to win a title, and have that winning mentality. Matic has that, and I can imagine that'll be very important moving forward.
How much should we have 10? 2 players per position is fine.
I think two first-team squad players per position is enough - then you have your more talented youth players to make up the rest of your 25~ man squad (that's how I'd imagine most managers want it, anyway). We also have Blind as back-up along with Fosu-Mensah and McTominay, so I don't think we are short in this particular area.
That's plenty of depth. When fit, one of Carrick, Fellaini and Pereira aren't even going to get on the bench.
When you consider that both Mkhitaryan and Mata can play in the hole, we've got a fantastic number of options in midfield. I can't think of a top side with more.
When Carrick leaves, he's likely going to be one of the targets to replace him along with Weigl.
I play fifa and this guy is a beast this year. would love to see him play for united. he is very calm even though he is still young. he can be the next vieira/keane.
I wouldn't be surprised if Fellaini is offered another contract coming season especially, after what Mourinho said about him the other day.
Havent watched this guy bar few games which I was too lazy to look closely in anyway. Obviously one shouldnt trust youtube videos, but watching some of them for him, have to say I have seen lots of players with much more compelling tricks/flicks and massive compilations but this is the only player that really blew me away since watching de bruyne clips 6-7 years ago. Weird that theyre both Belgian. This guy is damn special. Anderlecht are demanding 30 million euros ? probably means they would let him for 5 million less even. No doubt, this would be the steal of the century, for whoever gets him.
