Leander Dendoncker

Not going to pretend I watched him enough to have a clear opinion about him but, his Europa League stats are impressive.

Mate he's only 16 and has only played for PSG's u16/18s as far as I know. Way too early to judge. I've heard good things about him and Arnau Puigmal who we also signed but no way is Jose or anyone at the club thinking of either as a replacement for anyone yet. The position of players at that age can easily change depending on how their body continues to grow. Young players are signed for our academy every year. He's not a prodigy like Rooney, Messi, or Fabregas if that's what you think. We'll see how he develops over the next few seasons with the u18s.
Ah yeah I've seen posters on here swear that the likes of Tunnicliffe and Larnell Cole etc will be future captains but there always seems to be a better chance of success when you sign the next big thing coming out of France and it's rare these days we land a young French talent like that that all the big clubs are after.

People here tend to overhype our youth players regardless of nationality. Yours was especially funny since I have no idea if the player you mentioned has even played for the u18s yet.

We were excellent.

Dendonker's late goal robbed us and highlighted another showing of our profligacy in front of goal. Tie should have been over by then.

Exactly. We weren't excellent then. It was only Anderlecht like. What's the point in having one of the most expensively assembled teams in the history of the sport and barely be able to see off a Belgian club in the Europa league, no matter how orgainsed or lucky they were? We made very hard work of it. Anyway, we won in the end and that's all that matters but we were very rarely excellent last year. Excellent would imply something completely different to what actually transpired. For me- we did well for a team in transition but for the amount of money we've spent post Fergie, anything other than a victory in the Europa league would have been a shambles, especially when all our CL eggs had been put in that particular basket. I won't remember very many performances from 2016/17 as excellent. Promising, yes sometimes. Excellent- not for me. Maybe Chelsea at home. I hope a few of our players really improve this year. I know it's not about signing a new team every year and we do have some very promising players here. Let's hope they can kick on! : )

Last time we signed a highly rated young French midfield talent that all clubs were after ended up breaking the world record transfer fee
Which has nothing to do with Traore. Planning our transfers around him can be nothing but a joke. Pretty sure he hasn't played in any of the televised u18 pre-season games and by all reports he is a box to box midfielder. He played in Austria in a game where there is about 5 minutes of highlights which he might be in.

True. The standard of youth players in france is far better than here, although thats probably more a sign of greater levels of participation than anything.

How is Matic worse than the rest? Worse than Dendoncker just because you decided Dendoncker resembled Carrick in making some passes and Gerrard in his height? Seriously, Matic is a PL winner and got 7 assists last season. Please.:wenger:

Pertinently, going by the papers, it would seem that Mourinho has the order you cited in reverse.

Dendoncker averages more key passes, shots, tackles won, interceptions and blocks than Matic, but apologies for not going by what the papers say.

The difference between the PL and Belgian league is huge though.

This transfer makes too much sense to happen.

I would guess a team like Spurs will sign him, give him a contract until 2117 and demand 20x what they paid for him when he starts performing well.

What I like about him is he is truly ambidextrous. He is able to make long passes with accuracy using both feet. Even his long-range shooting is equally good from both left and right.

Seems like a good long term target for United, but I think United couldn't afford to give chance to too many youngsters. Not at the moment anyway, which I think Mou is trying to build an immediate working, and hopefully winning team so that it will be a good base to bring in potential youngsters to let them grow into the team better.

A bit like the Real's Galactico project, when the team is winning, they can bring in younger players like Asensio and Llorente into their team without putting too much pressure on them as the team still has a very strong core of experienced players. Something United is lacking at the moment, but is on the right track.

I'd rather see United spend 25m on a young midfielder with upside in Dendoncker than see them spend 40m on someone like Matic.

I was impressed in the games against United, I thought he was better than Tielemans in those games. Make it happen.

He is not ready, people just like to type anyone but matic etc but he is not close to matic's level. If he was, then in this market he would already been sold.
People will scout him for now and be sure about him.

Agreed he's nowhere near as consistent as Matic, but he's a talent for sure. I wouldn't mind buying him now, just to loan him out for a season. But, Matic is superior at the moment and first team quality is what we need now.

We are not at the lucury of buying players for 25-35 million and loaning them out. We need ready players now and i think jose has identified two in dier and Matic and i would be happy with either of the two. Talent he surely is, but united are not in a position to gamble on talent alone. Its been too long united havent even challenged for the title and that is what we need to do.

I think either I wasn't very clear or you may have missed my point. I was agreeing with your point in that Matic is what we need now, but I wouldn't mind if we also were to buy Dendoncker now and loan him out for a season.

I'd say sign them both and get rid of Fellaini.

DMs-Dendoncker-Matic
Box to box- Herrera-Pogba
No 10- Mata, Periera, Mkhitaryan
That's better, but a lot of money to spend on a DM that won't play regular games. It has to be one or the other. I think Dendoncker has the potential to be a real powerhouse. He dragged Anderlecht back into the game against us, he works hard to defend, and his passing was immaculate in both games.

You would say that, "don't sign old players" :p
I've always been against signing old players. Ever since I was a kid I've never brought myself to see the sense in it. And that's not to say that old guys can't play, there's been lots of awesome ones. But mostly it's a young man's game.
