La Liga - 2014/15

 How can any other player than these two realistically expect a chance at Ballon d'Or?

He was a good finisher. He's been poor for a few seasons straight now. That chance used to be his bread and butter but he usually wastes them now.
Don't watch Barca nearly as much as I used to, but he still seems to have a decent scoring record (other then this season). As a player overall he was never anything special though.

The brilliant thing about Messi is all his goals are through mostly his own genius. Some players would score one of the ones he scored tonight once in a few years, he does it week in week out. It's extraordinary, and that seems to be the barrometer he's judged on.

It really is ridiculous how somebody can seriously mention anyone else. Even in a below par year like what Messi had last season, he was still head and shoulders above anyone in world football, bar Ronaldo. It's not comparing players to their normal standard. It's comparing their overall level against each other and nobody comes close.

What an afternoon. A Messi hattrick and an Andy Carroll double

Heard that , not sure if correct , but anyway :p

messi 21st hattrick, 3 of them with penalty included, ronaldo 23 hattricks, 15 with penalty

I remember around last April (the time of the CL clashes between Barca and Atleti) there were a few Barca fans (Malapaper was one) saying that Messi should be sold :wenger: . Just as well the Barcelona board did not listen to him.

Messi's control in tight spaces and ability to find space to shoot or pass in a crowded area is the best I've ever seen.

Not watched the game but surprised to see so much flak for Busquets. Not the most likeable of characters but I think he's a fantastic player!

Yup.

We should have a Ronaldo/Messi contest and then one for everyone else!

 Yes, that's the only way. Ronssi d'Or should be award for the one who does better between these two and Ballon d'Or for the 3rd best :D

Up next Moyes and Stefano's Real Sociedad vs Villareal. Should be a good game.

Absolutely amazing game from Messi today.

Yesterday already a great game from Ronaldo as well.

It's so much fun to watch both of these players every weekend and still people can't stop quarreling about who is the better player.

My advice Just shut up and enjoy the god damn show.

Sensible post but that won't happen with the likes of Shed End, Snake what his name and Ronaldo's mum posts. Always better to discuss haircuts and tax cases.

I don't think that was his point though... not in a literal sense anyway, I believe he implied Messi shouldn't be untouchable or free from criticism and he felt very strongly about Messi's "passive" performances against Atléti last season (rightly so as well) at the centre of that notion. I doubt many predicted the unglamourous way in which Ronaldinho's Barça career came to an end when he was at the peak of his powers just a year and a half earlier, for example. That turned out quite okay for them.

When a player keeps saving manager's ass every 2nd game, you know something is not right. So I was just wondering if Mou was somehow available.

Oh. Mourinho at Barcelona mate? Can't see it myself. I don't think Barcelona's purists would like to see someone like Mourinho and his respective football philosophy at their club. Bad blood between both. Can only imagine what Johan Cruyff would write about this possible appointment.

Must've been quite the decision, that!

That is fair enough. Although I do think he was serious about the selling part and I think that was a massive overreaction.

17 of Messi's 21 Liga hat-tricks are pure hat-tricks, not including any penalty or dive #fcblive Ronaldo: 9 pure ones of 23

Bit of a pointless stat, but the large difference there is quite astonishing. Real getting more decisions their way?

Indeed, it's a bit much. Sure he's not been at his Guardiola-era form, but then which Barça player has? Iniesta is most noticeable IMO, really really dropped off after probably enjoying his best ever individual season in 2011/12, to just invisible and near impactless the next two seasons. Struggling with injuries this season.

As I replied to @TheShedEnd earlier, this is my take on Busquets,

I think you're doing a huge disservice to Busquets here... likely coloured in by the typical British view on what a DM is supposed to be or be capable of. As a holding mid his positioning and anticipation was already of the highest level, but it's his technical prowess that made him so highly rated because he was a very important cog in Guardiola's machine. He'll never be as good as a Mascherano type at the physical stuff, he doesn't have that tenacity or aggressiveness, but he looks more for "intelligent" or constructive solutions. It's clear that in the current system he can't keep up with the physical demands (as Xavi, Iniesta and even Messi have all been affected by as well by the way) under first Martino's and now Lucho's templates where they have to cover more ground.

Tactically and positionally he was one of the best, he had to be in order to successfully anchor such an open and "suicidally high-line" DF as what Barça's system had become under Guardiola, all by himself by the way! No-one sitting there next to him to clean it up when opp. breached their MF.

I think it was mainly predicated on an "if" scenario (as in, IF Messi remained that passive and uninvolved the next season he suggested getting rid). Otherwise, it's hard to believe anyone would be that irrational.

I think the style of play has A LOT to do with it. Madrid play counter attacking football at breakneck speed. Often defenders are left scrambling as they go in on goal and end up fouling them. Also Madrid seem to take players on more and bring about fouls. Then of course on top of that you've got someone who can literally get a penalty without being fouled :annoyed:
